Tour New Jersey's Architects Golf Club, paying homage to game's classic course designers

PHILLIPSBURG, N.J. -- At Architects Golf Club in western New Jersey, the course's 18 holes are modeled after 18 different architectural styles of the best classic architects. It begins with Old Tom Morris and culminates with Robert Trent Jones Sr.

Besides the course's unique strategy, another standout element its its western New Jersey scenery surrounded by farms and countryside that delivers a peaceful and scenic round.

"There's a reason we are the Garden State," said Chris McDermott, head professional at Architects Golf Club. "You're out in the country, but close enough if you want to go to the city you can."

Among the architectural styles featured is A.W. Tillinghast, who designed nearby PGA Championship host Baltusrol (as well as nearby Winged Foot and Bethpage Black among others). The seventh hole at Architects is a par 4 that pays homage to Tillinghast with a pinched fairway and elevated green, and demonstrates several different bunker styles you can find in his designs.

I toured the course with McDermott during the week of the PGA Championship and you can see highlights here:

Architects currently has a 4.3/5 rating on Golf Advisor and its standout category is its Course Layout. Green fees are $69-109 with additional discounts for seniors and twilight.

Reviewer PatODonnell gave the course five stars in this review from June:

I've played this course several times in the past and it is one of those courses that is on my "must play" list - TWICE annually even though it is probably 50 miles/one hour from my home in Middlesex County. The course is always in immaculate condition and is among my Top 10 List and I've played most of the golf courses in New Jersey. Club house is also beautiful with good food and drinks.
