What makes a great ladies golf trip destination?

While guys groups tend to play 36 holes a day, ladies trips normally have more variety in their activities. After a round of golf in the morning, shopping, a spa trip, wine tasting and great food become the main attraction.

A great setting with plenty of sunshine is also important, not to mention a great golf course or two.

Here are my top five resorts to take a ladies golf trips in the U.S., or watch the video above.

5. Silverado Resort, Napa, Calif.

In the heart of Napa's wine country, it's golf by morning, wine tasting in the afternoon at Silverado Resort & Spa. Both the North and South Courses are fair and fun tests, and when Johnny Miller purchased the resort, he moved the ladies sets of tees up to be more accommodating.

4. The American Club, Kohler, Wisc.

The four golf courses between Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run have a wide variety of difficulty, though Pete Dye's wife Alice always ensures his designs will be playable for everyone.

At the Five Diamond American Club hotel, the Waters Spa is a marvel, including a water massage that is very popular.

3. Sea Island, Ga.

A fantastic seaside setting with great service to go along with three golf courses that are very playable and walkable. Sea Island ranks high in almost every category and specifically for ladies trips. Perhaps the biggest reason is the service, which sets the bar for golf resorts.

2. Lodge at Pine Needles, N.C.

While nearby Pinehurst is also great for ladies trips, the Lodge at Pine Needles is a U.S. Women's Open venue and features instruction programs specifically catering towards women's groups.

Resort host, the legendary Peggy Kirk Bell, ensures ladies are always a focal point at the hotel and two Donald Ross-designed courses, Pine Needles and Mid Pines.

1. The St. Regis Monarch Beach, Calif.

St. Regis Monarch Beach is home to a beach club, fantastic spa, and a beautiful ocean setting. It's no wonder a lot of ladies groups frequent this luxurious resort in Orange County.

For golf, Monarch Beach Golf Links is short, playable and has beautiful scenery on the beach.

One more thing.  If I were to name the top 5 courses on the Hawaiian Islands for ladies golf trips, they would be:

1.  Wailea Emerald Course- Wailea, Maui2.  Mauna Lani South Course- Kona, Big Island of Hawaii3.  Manele Bay Golf Course- Manele Bay, Lanai4.  Poipu Bay Golf Course- Poipu, Kauai5.  Turtle Bay Palmer Course- North Shore, Oahu

Each course offers perks that women golfers want.  Friendly course, resort area, beautiful scenery, Flora/Fauna, and a variety of great places to eat.

My husband and I plan buddy trips all the time for each of our respective ladies/mens golf groups.  Living in Hawaii we're lucky to have year round golf and many courses to choose from.  Island hopping is fun to do for us as we can fly for 20-30 minutes and be on a different island.  We do 2-4 trips a year with friends and enjoy resort courses as well as the local municipal courses.  The ladies I golf with are ok to do 36 holes once in awhile but also love to relax and have some down time by the beach or pool.  Most of the resort areas have spas that we enjoy as well as activities we sign up for.  Taking a helicopter ride around the island or cruising on a catamaran to find a secret snorkel spot have been our experiences.  Most of us are either active or retired military and have access to the military courses on island which offer discounted rates and prime locations.  We have a saying here on the islands.  "Lucky to live Hawaii", and I feel it every day.  Aloha golf groupies!

Hmm. Wondering if there's a difference between what women want in a golf resort and what men think women want in a golf resort. Check out the top 10 as selected by a panel of women -- http://read.uberflip.com/t/164737
