The Cape Club by Troon in Massachusetts to reopen with new name, mission and look

The former Ballymeade Country Club will reopen this summer as The Cape Club by Troon after extensive changes to the golf course, clubhouse and club amenities.

The clubhouse enhancements at The Cape Club, located in Falmouth Mass., on Cape Cod, were unveiled last fall along with the addition of a new restaurant, the Cape Grille Steak & Seafood. Clubhouse enhancements include a renovation of fixtures, furnishings, marble tile accents, siding, windows, doors and more. The new clubhouse has more than 20,000 square feet of banquet space, groom and bridal suites, golf shop, meeting space and the restaurant.

But the big news this year is the course renovation, which has been ongoing. It will culminate this summer with the opening of redesigned holes that include expanded water features on holes 9 and 18, new bunkering and the addition of some new forward tees.

In addition, all the fairways were re-contoured and widened. All the tees were resurfaces and expanded. The greens complexes were reshaped and re-contoured. And the course also got new cart paths, using white crushed stone to match the look of the new Augusta white-sand bunkers.

Greens, green approaches and fairways were seeded with bentgrass, while a rye/bluegrass blend was used to overseed the roughs and tees. A drought-tolerant fescue has been used on the outer roughs.

Troon and the on-site Cape Club team are managing the final grow-in process.

"The new ownership of The Cape Club certainly had a vision to embark upon a complete turnaround of the project," said Ron Despain, vice president of golf course development for Troon Golf. "After three decades the original clubhouse and golf course were certainly in need of a 'refresh.' The new clubhouse is amazing, and the golf course is currently being transformed into one of the best in the region. Our goal is to create a presentation on each and every hole that encourages the golfer to enjoy both the beauty and strategy of the golf hole."

The new practice facility at The Cape Club is being relocated adjacent to the clubhouse to integrate golf, dining and social activities within the practice experience. Distance-tracking technology will also be part of the practice facility so golfers can accurately track how far they hit each club.

Long-term plans for the practice facility include the construction of an upper deck with seating areas that allow guests to dine, practice, take in football or baseball games on flat-screen televisions and socialize, all within steps of the practice tee.

Future plans call for residents, cottages and spa amenities. Services at The Cape Club will be centered on a "member for a day" foundation, meaning amenities and service will make guests feel as if they are a member.

Having just bought a second home on Cape Cod I look forward to several trips to The Cape Club. I have played Ballymeade several times and to say it needed a refresh was an understatement
