Sin City and buzzer beaters: Golf in Las Vegas, Nevada, heats up during March Madness

The term "March Madness" could easily apply to the scene in Las Vegas during the NCAA Tournament.

The Strip is one of the hot spots during the annual college basketball tournament, especially during the first two weeks. Betting, birdies and basketball seem to go hand in hand. The excitement of all those upsets gets the sports books buzzing. March is also the start of high season for the golf season. The courses are in prime shape, and the weather consistently warms up into the 70s.

A few package deals could make a Las Vegas golf trip even sweeter this time of year.

TPC Las Vegas

TPC Las Vegas, a former host of the PGA Tour and PGA Tour Champions, is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a March special at the JW Marriott Las Vegas, including a 20-percent discount in the golf shop and the TPC Grille and $20 replay rates, all on March 20. Dramatic shots over canyons are the signature of the Bobby Weed/Raymond Floyd design.

Walters Golf

Walters Golf, which owns Royal Links Golf Club and Bali Hai Golf Club, offers all sorts of packages. Their package deals at LasVegasGolf.com feature stays at the Mirage Hotel & Casino, the MGM Grand Resort & Casino, Aria Casino & Resort, the Bellagio or Luxor. You can even book a deal to play 36 holes a day, or tour the Hoover Dam by helicopter. Prices range from $299-$749.

Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort

GOLFaPalooza at the Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort costs $179 for two rounds of golf, lunch, unlimited range balls and 50 percent off rental clubs. The three golf courses at Paiute -- Snow Mountain, Sun Mountain and the Wolf -- all rated highly among Nevada's best courses on Golf Advisor for 2015. Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort provides a golf oasis deep in the desert away from the Strip.

Cascata/Rio Secco

Caesars Entertainment Corp. doesn't play the golf packaging game. Essentially, golfers should book wherever they want to stay (obviously Caesars prefers you pick their casino hotels) and then book rounds accordingly. The March rates at both Cascata ($295-$395) and Rio Secco ($119-$199) fluctuate depending upon the day and time.

Another to consider

The Las Vegas Golf Package Special of the Month for March/April at lasvegasgolfadventures.com features rounds at Siena Golf Club, the Lexington Course and Concord Course at Revere Golf Club and the Arroyo Course at Red Rock Country Club. A four-night stay runs $599 and up.
