Well-known Illinois value course tops Power Rankings for the month of July

We're in the heat of summer and looking back on the top-rated courses in July according to reviews submitted to Golf Advisor.

This month's list has a couple familiar names on it. Earlier this morning, we released our Top 50 courses under $50, based on reviews over the last two-and-a-half years. This month's top course, Aldeen Golf Club, made that list at No. 21. Also, this month's 9th best course, Edgewater Golf Club, also scored in the Top 50 (No. 42). So it's great to see these two courses continue to roll out the red carpet and yet remain affordable.

Aldeen, located about 90 minutes west of Chicago and operated by the Rockford Park District, has a tremendous reputation for offering a great bargain. Reviewer frecklesx20 calls it one of the best in the country.

"Great course, great condition, great fun, good selection of tee boxes. Course better than courses in Florida, Myrtle Beach and Maui in this price range."

The remainder of the top ten of the month features not only good bargains, but resort courses and other more expensive rounds.

Review of the month

Have you ever given up on a golf course, only to return years later and be pleasantly surprised with improvements? That's how reviewer BSERKES felt about Lido Golf Club, originally designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., on Long Island:

I started playing Lido Beach around 30 years ago. One of the best layouts on Long Island with wind and water coming into every shot. I stopped playing about 10 years ago due to poor course conditions. Burnt out fairways and poor greens with very little grass and mostly weeds. Booked a Golf Now tee time and was impressed with how the greens keeper was able to renovate the links style course. The fairways and green were acceptable and there was grass on the 13th holdefor the first time in years. I will be sure to come back soon. -
