I've covered over 60 buddies trips, and have played in another 60. Some of those trips have had fitting tributes to friends the group has lost along the way. But there's no bigger buddies trip, and no more touching tribute, than the World's Largest Golf Outing, which benefits the Wounded Warrior Project.

Since 2011, over 33,000 participants on 110 courses have raised over $2 million for the Wounded Warrior Project, which honors, empowers, supports and creates awareness for injured service members.

On Aug. 3, on courses all over the country, all of which are owned or managed by Billy Casper Golf, the WLGO takes place at a course near you. Online registration cutoff date is July 30. Click here to find a participating course.

The format is a four-person team scramble (18 or nine holes, depending on the course). Teams compete for highest fundraising total and lowest team score. A $10 donation to the WWP is included in your registration fee and everyone will be entered to win a drawing for a trip for four to the Nike Campus in Beaverton, Ore., which includes airfare, accommodations and a set of custom-fit irons.

Although it's a competitive event, the WLGO is about much more than the low score. The team that raises the most money for Wounded Warrior Project receives a trip for four to Kiawah Island Golf Resort, which includes airfare, two nights for four people in the villas or the Sanctuary. They also receive three rounds of golf, one on the Ocean Course, which has hosted major championships and a Ryder Cup, and they choose from two rounds on Osprey Point, Turtle Point, Cougar Point or Oak Point.

Last year, Florida led in number of participants (1,717) and money raised ($128,275). California (1,047/$88,180) and Virginia (1,316/$80,850) were also very active in both participants and donations.

Having covered the 2014 event at St. Johns Golf and Country Club in St. Augustine, Fla., the WLGO is yet another reason to marvel at how the game of golf is used, not only as a venue for camaraderie, but as an engine to raise funding and awareness for a worthy cause.

Important to note, you can register as a single, twosome or foursome. Once your registration is complete, your team will be provided with a personalized webpage, which can be sent out to family, friends or colleagues who can support your efforts on the course. All WLGO team fundraisers have until Aug. 7 at 9 p.m. EST to reach their fundraising goals. Donations are encouraged to go through the WLGO Web site: WorldsLargestGolfOuting.com.
