Registration open for World's Largest Golf Outing, benefitting Fisher House Foundation, on Aug. 1

Imagine the largest charity golf tournament you've ever played in and multiply it by hundreds. That's the power of the World's Largest Golf Outing, which since 2011 has had more than 40,000 participants contributed more than $3 million to support injured veterans and their families.

This year, the sixth annual W.L.G.O. will be on Monday, Aug. 1. Online registration is ongoing for this simultaneous outing projected to be played at more than 150 courses across America. A USGA handicap is not required, and players can join as a single, twosome or foursome.

Proceeds from players and non-players will benefit the Fisher House Foundation, the international nonprofit that provides free, temporary lodging for families to be near loved ones receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers. Teams are encouraged to raise additional funds to support the worthy cause; donations are made at WorldsLargestGolfOuting.com.

"Golf has the very real power to change the lives of our heroes, so we encourage everyone to sign up and enjoy a memorable day of competition, camaraderie and charity," said Peter Hill, Chairman and CEO of Billy Casper Golf, which founded the event in 2011."

Last year 12,397 golfers, including 567 wounded warriors, teed it up at 132 courses in 28 states to raise a record $1,024,287. This topped 2014 when 12,100 golfers raised $887,000.

"One team playing in the World’s Largest Golf Outing can provide one veteran's family nearly one week's refuge at a Fisher House," said Ken Fisher, chairman and CEO of Fisher House Foundation. "Family is essential in a veteran’s recovery process, and many times their love is the best medicine."

Grand prizes are very grand

Besides the altruistic motivation, there's plenty of other incentives to play as well. All registered golfers are entered into a drawing for a trip for four to the Nike Campus in Beaverton, Oregon, for custom club-fitting and other merchandise.

And the team that raises the most money nationally will win a trip for four to Destination Kohler, Wisc., future host of the 2020 Ryder Cup. Golfers will stay at The American Club and play the Irish Course at Whistling Straits and either the River or Meadow Valleys at Blackwolf Run. The lowest scoring and highest fundraising teams at each participating course will also win prizes.

New challenge coins also are available for each team that raises $1,000 or more. The unique tokens feature artwork depicting the World's Largest Golf Outing and Fisher House Foundation, and represent personal symbols of devotion for giving back to injured veterans and their families.

"There’s a deep vein of patriotism in all of us to support our troops," Hill said. "These amazing prizes are extra motivation to generate donations which help our military heroes during times they need it most."

Golfer check-in, shotgun start and entry fee -- which includes a $10 per player donation to Fisher House Foundation, greens fee, cart rental, range balls (where applicable), lunch, WLGO gift bag, awards reception and on-course contests -- vary by course.
