Nice Course
Four of us from Columbus played the first tee time (6:30) on a Saturday morning having never played Fowler's Mill before (we played Little Mountain later in the day). No one at the bag drop area to greet us at 6:00am. Girl behind the pro shop counter where we need to check in, just ignores us (we are the only people there) as she is not happy about something and counting pennies out of the register. After we finally get checked in, one of us asks about coffee - we are told there is none but they are working on it. We hit a few balls and practice putts and one of us goes to check on coffee just before we are to tee off - still no coffee. Course is very nice, very good conditions. Greens were not as fast as you would have expected or wanted, maybe they were not mowed. Coffee was available at the turn. Played in 4:15, but of course we teed off first and let a 2-some through on the 3rd hole. After the round we saw a few guys at the bag drop who chatted with us but did not offer to clean our clubs.
Fowler's Mill is ranked as a top 5 Public course in Ohio, which may be true, but, Longaberger is a distant #1. Our foursome would play it again.
Worst value golf round in years
I am a single digit handicap who has worked in the golf industry for 5+ years.
I played on a Sunday AND…… the weather was near ideal and gorgeous. The layout and routing of the course was pretty good. That’s where the good ends.
While the carts were new and nice, nearly all of them had TRASH in them. When I went to fix my first divot I noticed the sand bottle was empty ….. tried the other side - same!
SEVERAL fairway bunkers were in disrepair and not being maintained anymore….. had grass and weeds growing in them.
The whole course had been grossly overwatered …… there were several places where carts or maintenance equipment had left 6 to 8 inch tire tracks of mud in the playing areas.
Fairways had NOT been mown. Greens were SO soft, a 40-yd pitch would leave a divot.
I might of thought rain a factor but 1) it had been sunny the last few days and I spoke with someone else on the course and they said at most they’ve been a quarter inch of rain over the last few weeks. ( there were places on the course in the sunlight that still had water at the tops of grass blades in mid afternoon ) I also played elsewhere in town the following day, and this problem did not exist.
It was nearly impossible to find a golf ball ….. between plugged balls and leaves that had not been blown away from playing areas. It was next to impossible..
Also - no short game area to warmup / practice with.
I was kind of expecting an anticipating an upscale golf experience and this was NOT it. HORRIBLE experience!
I made a trip to the area from about 5 hours away and this was easily the worst course in my itinerary.
Whoever runs the place should be embarrassed!
***Btw - I next to never provide review of anything or anyone but I had to warn golf enthusiasts of the condition of this property-
I recommend you take your money elsewhere, unless you want to go play at a Mudbog!
Shameful that this classic Pete Dye course continues to be plagued by cheap ownership. I know that the superintendent is NOT the issue, not enough help, forced to use old equipment, and youre only as good as your budget.Sell this great track to someone who cares you tightwad.
Weather was to blame
Fowler’s is a great P. Dye track. Unfortunately, this time around the course was almost under water. But, we played anyways. Staff couldn’t have been any nicer to its out of town guests.
Serene beauty
It was an overcast morning. The course was in great shape. The rough wasn’t overgrown. The course is well maintained. The greens are very fair. The landscape is beautiful with mature trees and playable bunkers.
Beautiful layout. Challenging course with several different types of holes making each shot unique. Would absolutely play here again, one of the best publicly available courses in Cleveland IMO.
Good/Bad
The course was in pretty conditions we played the River 9 amd the Maple 9. The river was in good condition the maple was poor. The maples sand traps were more like weeds. we got paired with another two sum which was rough because the one player didn’t know how to play at all. A ranger really needs to be out there because the one golfer really slowed down the pace of play and caused the course to get backed up.
Playing for the first time in about 20 yrs
Everything was great - only negative point was the bunkers haven’t been raked in a long time. greens good, Fairways great. Just over 4 hours for my foursome
Good conditions, lots of fun to play!
Tough course, but lots of fun. The rough is cut very high, making it tough to find some shots. Course was in good shape. $60 is a little steep, but a Hot Deal is well worth it!
Great layout
Great layout, condition very disappointing. Rough over grown with clover and weeds. Tee boxes cut but areas around them overgrown and full of weeds. For such a beautiful course, very sad to see it in such poor condition. Greens and fairways pretty good and enjoyed playing it for first time in a few years
