Fair at best

The only reason I did not put one star is due to the condition of the course. It is absolutely beautiful, however management ruins it. The management main tactic is to print money here. This means expect sometimes 5 hour rounds of golf and lots of waiting. We got started on #10 and finished the back nine in 1 hour and 45 minutes. We made the turn and saw 5 groups waiting to tee off. Mix this with 30% of the players walking and you have a recipe for disaster. Having 3 foursomes eliminate the thought of a bunch of Patrick Cantlays out there. If you have lots of time and love slow paced golf, this is for you.

Still great

I reviewed this course not too long ago and not much has changed. Great course, great layout, great conditions, great staff. The price is a little high on the weekends. And it’s packed so the pace is never great on Saturday. But it’s one of the best public courses around. Well worth the 2 hour drive to get there a time or 2 a year

Still one of my favorites

I look forward to the chance to get to Boone and play at Boone Golf Club all spring. It is one of my favorite courses to play. The layout is very fun to play. It is pretty forgiving if you’re not hitting it straight. It’s really not a mountain course except for holes 10 and 11. The front especially is very flat. Every time I have played there the course has been in really good shape. Today was not the best, there were some weeds in 4 fairway and a couple tee boxes. But it was still really good. The greens are super. Very smooth and pretty quick. Pace of play can be an issue. There is not a lot of public golf in the area. So prices are high. And it’s packed on the weekends. Expect a 4,5-5 hour round. However, today was the first time I’d been there that wasn’t a Saturday and it wasn’t quiet as crowded. And the pace was just under 4 hours. You don’t want to be in a rush on this course anyway. Enjoy the beautiful conditions and views.
1 is a medium length par 4 with a downhill tee shot. Front the 2 back tee boxes it doglegs right around a group of small trees. A small stream fronts a very large green that slopes hard from back to front.
2 is a longer dogleg right par 4. Avoid the sand on the right of the fairway and right of the green
3 is a tough par 3. Longer than most you must hit over a natural wetlands area and hit the green.
4 is a dogleg right par 4. Cut off as much as you can for a much shorter 2nd shot. Any approach that misses right will bounce into a small creek
5 is a dogleg left par 4. Aim over the mound on the left. Huge green with a tough up and down.
6 is a long dogleg right par 5. You must lay up short of a large pond and then carry it. Big green slopes very steeply from back to front. You do not want to go long.
7 is a dogleg left par 4. This fairway is pretty tight. I hit it today. But usually do not. Approach to a green that slopes left to right.
8 is a long par 3. The tee box was moved up today and it was 170. But I’ve played it as long as 200 from the white tees. Not a lot of trouble. But a long shot.
9 is a short par 4 up the hill. The fairway slopes pretty hard from right to left. The green is pretty shallow. And there is a creek/ditch right in front of most of the green.
10 is a roller coaster par 5. The fairway slopes HARD right to left. Slightly downhill tee shot. Then layup further downhill. Then a steep uphill approach to a very narrow green.
11 is a medium length par 3 basically over a valley. Huge green depth wise. Make sure you know where the pin is.
12 is a shorter par 4 but it doglegs hard left about 100 yards from the green. Need a tee shot of about 200 yards.
13 is a fun par 4. Aim over the left hand fairway trap for best position. Approach downhill do not go over the green.
14 is a wide open par 4 with a downhill tee shot. Very open beautiful hole
15 is a short par 4 with a creek right in front of the green and a bunker that eats up half the fairway about 100 yards from the green.
16 is a medium length par 3. Over a natural wetland. Very similar to hole 3 but the angle is more to the right where as 3 the angle is left.
17 is a shorter par 4 with an uphill approach. Reachable in 2. But very narrow green to hit.
18 is a beautiful hole. Long par 4. Downhill tee shot. Back uphill to the green with a pond on the left.
All in all a really fun place to play. I highly recommend it.

Fall Break

Getting to the end of the season and course is showing a bit of wear and tear. Greens still excellent, quick as always, but tees had just been plugged and fairways were shaggy. We live in the middle of the state and try to make a day trip up to Boone 3-4 times a year for a meal, some quick shopping and a round of golf. The biggest problem with Boone GC is they try to get too many players on the course, and with minimal effort to use a ranger to keep things moving, you are almost always guaranteed a 4:30 - 5 hour round. Definitely detracts from the experience of playing a fun course. Players have been complaining about slow play here for years so I don’t think they really care, but it would be nice if speed of play could be improved. I guess nothing will happen unless people stay away.

Boone in Oct

Great shape, flags well marked, challenging holes. Fun course to play on beautiful sunny fall day. Hope I can come back to NC to play it again. Pace was slow due to two groups ahead of us.

Fun course

Conditions were excellent. Greens were smooth and fast. It is a fun layout with fairly challenging greens. Put the ball in the wrong spot on the green and you will have to earn that two putt. I would definitely recommend playing the course if you are in the Boone area.

Terrific Course

On a perfect day, this course couldn't have been nicer. Excellent course condition from tees to greens. Pace of play was slower than normal due a group that collapsed down from two foursomes into one group of eight. It appeared the rangers got that worked out after a few holes and pace on the back nine was much improved. Undulating greens were tough to putt, but in great condition.

Slow, slow, slow

Do not expect a 4 hour round at this course. They allow walking the course and we took 4:55 for 18 holes. What was really, really annoying is being on the tee box of #12 with three groups ahead of you on that hole and the GPS computer warns you that you are 25 minutes behind and if you don’t speed up, you’ll be asked to skip a hole to get back in position. Too many warnings and advisories kept coming up on the very over programmed computer including a speed warning of doing 4 mph in a 10 mph zone. Very, very frustrating to say the least. Also, cart shut down three times in areas with no cart signs in place. Yardages from GPS were very helpful and could speed up play except for slow walkers in front of riding carts holding everything up. Please, please have rangers work on slow groups that fall out of position and reprogram the computers to reduce all the distractions.

Wonderful Mountain Golf

First time playing here and was delighted at the course conditions and layout. Very tough greens but in immaculate condition. The reason I did not rate the value higher was the $50 price for a dozen Bridgestone balls. The greens fees and cart rental were good, considering the experience. Will golf here in the future!!

Strange Turn of Events

Normally love playing The Boone Golf Course, but it started to rain a bit as our foursome was finishing the first nine. When we drove away to go to the back nine the course officials created a golf cart blockade to not allow us to play anymore. So we were forced to quit after nine, a strange turn of events.

Boone Golf Club is fantastic

A real treasure only a few minutes from downtown Boone. I took a quick overnight from Pinehurst & played Monday afternoon/Tuesday morning. Wish I could have stayed longer and played all week! Great course conditions & views- its simply a great place. Relatively flat course with tricky greens- I will be back soon & bring some pals for a great trip!- JP
