Great course
They have done alot of work to the course. We always love playing here. It is a very challenging course.
Three of my sons and I played this course while on vacation in the Gatlinburg area. We were all very pleasantly surprised of the quality of the course. It was a great value, and we’ll come back next time we’re in the area.
Back nine was Brutal.
Smoky Mountain GC in Newport TN. could be a real gem of a public course. As an avid, single digit handicap golfer, I love finding public courses that are fun, challenging, and affordable to play. The front nine at SMGC was just that. Wide fairways, smaller greens, but still enjoyable and in very good condition . The staff is very friendly and it's very affordable for a senior, like me. Then we got to the back nine, and OMG what a difference. Much narrower fairways, with some repair work visible, which was fine, but the greens made the back nine not fun for several reasons. While there was a sign that said Please excuse our repairs {mostly on the back nine], it was not the repair work, but the extremely small size , and their location-at the top of extremely steep hills, that killed this course. For several holes, it was like hitting up to the top of a volcano, with the smallest greens I have ever seen! And many of those greens were domed as well! By the way, I had 2 birdies on the back nine, but I still had so many holes that were just not close to being fair for the golfer. If I could play just the front nine twice, I would go back. They need to take those holes, cut off 20 ft of elevation from the green down, and redo the green surface with a slightly larger target for your approach shot. This could be a real gem, but not the way the back nine is now.
Local, HONEST Opinion
READ: I’m local, have played this course monthly my whole life. Been up & down thru the years but always been a desired course in the area. Has had some green issues in the past but in 2023 they got them right! Then in early July a chemical issue caused some green issues but they are quickly coming back. INFO: The Trump family investment group recent bought the course (YES, THAT TRUMP) and they are Pouring money and resources into the course and soon the facilities. There is big improvements weekly! Definitely worth a play! BEAUTIFUL MOUNTAIN COURSE, challenging, and worth your time and your $35(ish). (Sept. 2023)

worst greens in the area. i played course last year and it was in excellent condition. not sure what is going on at the course now. pace of play was awful taking almost 5 1/2 hrs to play. pro shop was just ok. it reminds me of the old white pine course now before they closed. it says something when the old oscars course is in better shape than smoky mtn. cc. i hope they can get it together since it has always been a great course
Somewhat demanding physically, but fine course with excellent staff.
I'm a North Carolina guy who drives over to East Tennessee from my NC border county mainly because of the friendliness and value of the East Tenn. Courses compared to WNC courses. My friend and I have played
Graysburg Hills, Twin Creeks, Andrew Johnson, Dandridge,Pine Oaks in J. City, and Smoky Mountain in Newport all numerous times. Every single one of these coures treats a golfer like he's their best friend and the price
is always very fair and reasonable compared to some of the more snobby and over-priced WNC courses.
I haven't played this course in couple months but several times before that and always found the staff to be caring and friendly, helpful to both of us as we are senior citizens with mild health issues. My only
complaint is the fact that on many greens it can be quite a chore to climb up an down from cart to the greens, seems a lot of greens are on hillsides. Also, a couple holes on back nine are difficult to make out
exactly where to hit the ball on the fairway and the greens are not visible from tee box. I know this is a mountain course and that's normal but possibly the senior tee box could be moved to a better location.
I don't mind the cart paths, don't mind seeing the trees removed, but I really hope with all these improvements, that the price doesn't go up to where it's a stuffy, snobby course that caters only to the big
spenders. It's fine the way it is, with personnel that's there, just give us a decent grill with hot sandwiches instead of peanut butter and jelly and keep prices down and we'll be just fine.
Don't bother
Played this course years ago and it's in the worst shape imaginable. Some greens are unputtable. It's like they let the greens totally burn up and now they are trying to get them back and it's not working.
5 hrs of fun
Interesting layout, especially the back 9. Plays narrow with lots of hills.. Many areas of the course have been recently resoded and its just starting to take. Same for many of the greens.
One foursome backed up the course and added an hour to the round. At the turn, this group had 4 groups waiting for them to tee off on 10. Being 90, sunny and humid just added to the misery of slow play. There was no one behind us. We should have just gone back and played the front side again.
Other than the slow play, on another day and at a faster pace, this would be a fun course to play
Thank you for your review. Yes we certainly have sodded quite a bit in an effort to repair winter damage we inherited since taking over ownership on 4/19/23. No one wants to get this buttoned up more quickly than I do. Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Rob Giampietro, GM and Superintendent.
Good mountain course
Good mountain course, needs a little improvement on cart path and course, We enjoy it. Course usually dry, few gnats, not real crowded and price is right.
Hi Eric thanks for your comments. My name is Rob Giampietro, and I am the GM and Superintendent. We've taken over 4/19/23 and have done quite a bit of work. We've taken down 175 trees and removed no fewer than 50 stumps in addition to the 175. We inherited damage from a tough winter and have sodded a lot of areas to repair.
Regarding the greens. We have 5 greens that are USGA spec with subsurface drainage. When that drainage becomes compromised, ie blocked up, gases back up, just as in septic, and kill the roots.
Additionally we were unable to water in an application on a few greens due to a mainline leak and we scrambled to get water on those few greens.
As a result you witnessed some turf loss on those few greens. They were pretty dialed in before those events.
I've hosted 3 PGA tournaments in my golf career and have been hired to fixed problems just like this throughout the US.
It hurts to get this review but I want you to know we've righted the ship and we are back on track.
We brought in a plumbers camera to scope the drainage and find the blockages in the greens drainage, made the repairs and now those greens can properly vent, as designed. The turf responds over night when it can breath properly.
I would like to personally invite you back to give us another chance.
Sincerely,
Rob Giampietro GM and Superintendent
