Sterling Hills
Played the Blues (6395/71.1/127) in clear, breezy conditions with temps in the low 80's. The POP was typical Sunday afternoon slow, around 4H, 45M. I was matched up with an inebriated 2some that were usually hilarious. They certainty kept me entertained as we waited. The tees were fairly lush, mostly level and only the par 3's needed divot attention. The fairways were probably the best I have ever seen them here, I would now classify them as good. Fairly lush, the many fairway areas they had previously resodded @ different times are filling in and becoming more and more playable. The primary rough is about 50/50 lush coverage with thin areas mixed in. The outer edges are mostly hardpan, you can really tell where they concentrate their watering. The large greens are recovering nicely from their recent aeration. However, they putted medium speed and will need another 10 days+ to get back to normal. Still firm, but they held full shots well. I find the greens here usually have more break than I read. Hardly a straight putt anywhere with lots of subtle break, and a few greens have hills or crests that produce severe breaks. The traps are always nicely raked. However I have a hard time grading them highly because they are more dark brown dirt than sand. Par 71 layout where you do not see the 2nd par 5 until the 16th hole, which I see as a detriment. However, okay layout overall set over rolling hills with numerous fun and interesting holes. The customer service was excellent from both the Pro Shop & the Starter. No GPS on the carts, average driving range. No drink cart, but they do have a snack shop available @ the turn. Recommended if you can get a deal for less than rack rate.
Worst Customer Service
Round started out fine! 330pm time. We were then told by the marshal as we were on the 4th hole that we need to be on the 7th hole by 5pm. No way that was going to happen. They had a shotgun starting at 5pm. So we skipped the 6th hole and proceeded to the 7th where there were two other foursomes waiting. This put us back over an over and we didn’t finish all 18. The next morning I called the pro shop and spoke with Matt Pavin. I kindly asked “ I was wondering if there was anything you could do for us”. I was then scolded and told that I shouldn’t expect to finish a twilight round regardless of the circumstances ($50.00 btw) and that he didn’t appreciate that I called and “demanded” an accommodation. I was then told that his staff told all of us when we checked in that there was a tournament at 5pm and that we would get a free 9 hole round. This never happened. Hence the reason I called the next day, obviously. We went back and forth on this for a minute as none of us in the group knew anything about it(with 3 of the four checking in separately too). Marshall also did say anything about the 9 holes. When I asked him if he was there when we checked in to hear them tell us about the tournament he hung up on me!!!! Sterlings now off the list!
very nice course
Beautiful views, and course layout, it was just aerated, so the greens we're not so great. I had fun, and I saw the challenging holes but I like how it played and I will definitely come again.
Great windy day!
Always faster moving and more challenging on a brisk windy day with views of snow-capped mountains and Channel Islands from some holes. Great fun on a public course that feels private. Thanks
Greens
Course was good, the only thing l didn't like was they had air raided the greens. Hard to putt om all that sand. It cost a couple of stokes..
Great as always

The place needs some work.
I like this course but I really think it needs to improve the playing conditions. Way too many craggy spots. The conditions of the bunkers are terrible. Hardly any sand at the bottom of the traps. Felt like I was hitting off of a dirt road. It won't take much to get the course back to where it should be, it's just not nearly there right now. This course has so much potential if the ownership and management are committed to a higher standard.
Always a great course!
Varied and interesting hole layout. Feels like a private course. Friendly, helpful staff. Pace of play sometimes too slow.
