North/East Review
Legends of Massillon is a 27 hole facility, the course is modern, with lots of great holes. It was a lot of fun to play. The fairways are crazy narrow, but there is a lot of space on most holes and the rough wasn't too penal. Big mistakes must be avoided. Everything we saw was well maintained, some holes have a lot of bunkers, not all were full with new sand, but don't hit it in the bunker and you don't need to worry about it.
I will write my experience about the pace of play and the lack of awareness of the starters and rangers. It seems to be an issue from other reviews.
I played the Tuesday after Labor Day in the morning. We got out after a local league and couple of groups of visiting seniors. They sent everyone I saw on the practice green off on the same nine, and there was a substantial wait on the first tee. After the 3rd hole, I could only see the two groups in front of us, but play was horribly slow, we had to wait on every shot for the front nine. The groups were waiting behind us. Twice a ranger came by and nothing was done or said about the pace of play. When we made the turn in 2:50, I realized it was just the group that the two groups ahead of us were the ones slowing everyone on the course down. We skipped 10 and 11, played 12-18 in an hour and only saw one group on 17 as we teed off on 12 (5 open holes ahead, with 3 groups waiting on the 10 tee). As we played 16 we passed the 13th hole, there was a group on the green, one on the fairway, and two groups on the tee box waiting. I mentioned the issues to pro shop, just for them to be aware.
I understand trying to stick to the tee sheet, but if that means slowing play down for everyone else and while you have another 18 holes open is absurd. I would like to play this course again, but would be afraid to run into the same issues again.
One of my Favorites
Played 18 today with my brother & a buddy who were first-timers to Legends, and we all had a blast! Brother drove up from Columbus to meet us, and it’s approximately a 1 hour drive for me and my friend, but we all agreed it was worth the drive.
I have played the course a handful of times, and really ever have only had 1 bad experience on my last visit, due to very slow pace of play; they had seriously overbooked and we got stuck behind 4 other groups from the start. I will give the starter credit, though; he tried to move my group(two people)up in front of the rest of the groups(all foursomes). Two of those groups were nice enough to let us play through, but the other two refused. A little common sense and courtesy by those two groups would have helped immensely w/ the pace of play complaint, but I guess those two traits are lost on some folks. So, as I mentioned earlier, I won’t totally blast the Legends staff for doing nothing to try and improve pace of play that day.
I was, of course, somewhat concerned that it could be a repeat this time, as I have seen pace of play complaints showing up in recent reviews as well. I’ll also say this; it seems like slow pace of play is FAR from exclusive to only this course. I feel like it’s an epidemic that pretty much affects every course at some point. I can say this time, though, pace of play was definitely not an issue. Talking to the starter today, it seemed as if they were actively trying to help make sure things didn’t get bottlenecked…he found us on the driving range about 10 minutes before our tee time, and offered to get us out early since the group before was running late. We jumped at that chance, and had maybe 2 times the whole round that we had to wait on the tee for groups ahead; maybe added 10 minutes total to our round. Can’t really complain about 4&1/2 hours for 18 on a Sunday morning.
Touching on a couple other points - course was today, and always has been, in great shape any time I’ve played it. Couple aerated greens on North 9 that made for tricky putts, but no other issues at all anywhere else this round.
Have always loved the layout of this course, it’s why I keep coming back!
Went there to play 18 and left after 9
So we had a 8:52am tee time. We were on the tee box @ 8:40am. We were not able to tee off until 9:12am due to the slow pace of play. For as many course options this course has we were backed up 4 groups by the 3rd hole. We paid to play 18 holes however due to time restraints we were only able to play 9 holes that day which took over 3 hours of agony to get through. For as large of course that it is, the starter should have distributed golfers across the course instead of bottlenecking everyone. It is a nice course, we played right after aeration and overseeding from the course conditions. I guess i really expected more compared to other courses in the area.
City Owned Course
The course is good, it's an original feeling track with a lot to think about. Plenty of sand and water, tall grass, elevation change, and some longer holes. The drawbacks are the driving range, which is in terrible condition most times, and the staff. I've never had a comfortable experience with the guys working there, and I've been going there for 15 years now. They are slow, miserable, and nonverbal most of the time. Do they get you checked out? Yes. Do they make you feel like you're bothering them the entire time? Also yes. That's what city employees feel like though.
Great all around.
Excellent experience. Busy and efficient and organized. 18 on a Sunday mid day in 4:30. Very helpful and friendly staff. Played North and South 9s. Receptive greens, challenging but fair. Well run operations will always get my time and money. Happy to recommend and return. Nice job Legends!
Beep Beep Beep
The entire time on the course all you will hear is that Loud Contruction Lift BEEPING BEEPING - Why on earth would they have a LOUD BEEPING BEEPING Contruction lift that only runs in Reverse - BEEPING BEEPING - NOTHING is more annoying - I drove an hour out to Massillon to hear BEEPING, BEEPING - couldn't be more unhappy for sixty bucks
