Stumpy Lake Golf Course
About
Stumpy Lake Golf Course is a Robert Trent Jones design that provides a unique golfing experience. This scenic layout is routed across a 1,400-acre nature preserve that is absent of any commercial or residential development for miles. The golf course wraps around its namesake lake, which has a canoe and kayak launch as well as a fishing pier. Deer, fox, and eagles are frequently seen on the course and there has even been the occasional bear sighting. Water has a prominent presence throughout and there are also several strategically placed bunkers. Stumpy Lake Golf Course is a layout that will force you to be creative with your shot making but it's still approachable enough for high handicappers to tackle with confidence. If you're looking to get in even more golf, sister club Honey Bee is located almost right next door.

Sad Greens
The course overall in pretty good shape, but the greens awful, mostly playing on dirt. With the greens in the shape they're in first they should let you know before you tee-off and second give you a discount because they were so bad. I wouldn't recommend the course right now, but when the greens are back yes I would.
Early morning Stumpy
Course was in fair shape for this time of year. Tees were a little bare but greens are adequate and rolled true.
Mud Pit
Have played this course many times and never been in this bad of shape. It has rained for a couple days here (6”) and the course was complete mud.
The course was 90* Cart Path Only ( I was also reprimanded by the Marshall for having one wheel off the path), so it was very slow. I played at 7:30 am by myself thinking I could play two balls and get through early. No one in front of me and still took over 4 hours walking back and forth all day. Then at 11:30 Marshall said you could drive in dry spots on the fairways????
It will be a while before I play here again.
Wonderful course and even better staff
Had a great time playing at stumpy lake for my first time. The greens were very well taken care of. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. The driving range was exactly what you need and in a perfect position to get some practice time right up to your tee time. I would absolutely recommend this course to anyone even beginners.
Not worth it
The course looked like it had the capability of being nice. Pace of play was awful. It was cart path only and tee times every 5 minutes. it was 1 big swamp. So it took forever just to get to your ball, and it was in a puddle so you had to move it, then by the time you hit. The next guy is ready to tee off. Left after 9 holes. Not at all worth it.
Rain
If it has rained recently it does end up heavily impacting your play especially on the back 9
Tee time debacle
Now, let me start out by saying that I have given Stumpy Lake nothing but good reviews over the past couple years. I always give them the benefit of the doubt. This review, however, not so much.
I booked a tee time for 2 at 3:10pm last Friday. I knew it would be busy, but we wanted to get some holes in anyway. When we got to the course, we had to wait almost 30 minutes to get our cart. When we finally got to the first tee box, there were 4 groups in front of us waiting to hit. Being the patient person I am, we decided to give it a shot and thought maybe things would separate a bit in a few holes. It did not. We hit our shots to the 2nd green, looked over at #3 box, picked up our balls and headed to the back 9 to see if things were any better. There were 4 groups on the 3rd tee box and another on the green.
It's been very slow before, but not to this extreme. Long story shorter, tee times should never be booked 7 minutes apart. I believe they know this, but continue to do it for one reason or another. Something should be done about this in the near future.
Staff is always great!!
Too expensive, wouldn’t recommend
Stumpy Lake Golf Course exhibits stunning natural scenery, but unfortunately falls short in the quality of its greens. The inconsistency and deterioration of the turf seems to not live up to a golfers expectations. However the course potential might still attract you, but one should brace for an underwhelming service experience. The Marshalls attitude, unfortunately, didn’t mirror the environment. His approach being distant and sometimes outright rude felt like a divot in the experience.
Almost Excellent, A lot of potential.
Loved the layout, great course design. No course maintenance, the greens were half dead, and the ground was extremely hard. Wouldn't recommend it for the price.
Wait until greens are repaired.
Mediocre experience for the $. Several greens under HEAVY repair, making them almost unplayable. My group had an early tee time on a holiday weekend with gorgeous weather. I was expecting pace of play to be somewhat slow, but 5.5 hours... There was no Marshall keeping groups moving this day.
The starter was very friendly as well as the rest of the staff. I will be back again but there is definitely better bang for the buck in Virginia Beach.
Hollice,
