Stono Ferry

Excellent course outside of Charleston. Holes were challenging with varied layout. Played on Thanksgiving and staff was still very friendly. The back nine is very impressive with a little history thrown in on a couple holes.

Fine Charleston course but not a great value

Took a side trip to play Stono Ferry and it is another fine Charleston area course. Thought it was a nice layout with good conditions but a tad bit overpriced. Even a weekday rate was pretty expensive for the track and not a great value.

The staff was extremely friendly except for the range marshall who was gruff and gave us trouble in a quite unfriendly manner for where we parked our carts. GPS in the carts was a nice touch but lock up when you stray even a bit off the course.

I feel like the holes by the Stono River are a bit overhyped as the views aren’t THAT special. Finishing hole on each side is pretty cool with 18 being an island green.

While the course was very crowded, I don’t think that was the reason for a slow round. Feel like it takes a while to play because the course is rather difficult - listed as 135 slope rating. A number of holes had forced carries and that is a challenge for even decent players.

It is a fun course that I do recommend but just not a bargain by any stretch.

Great day on the links

Beautiful public track in Charleston. Fairways are plush and greens reasonably quick. Excellent layout, you must move your ball in both directions off the tee to score. Will definitely go back! Not too far from downtown.

Fun Course, painful pace of play

Second visit to course. Enjoyed the course again. Fun layout, can be challenging and course in fine condition. Had a 9:20am tee time on a Saturday and pace of play was painfully slow-5+ hour round

BIG Brother

The only frustrating part of the day was the use of the Cart. IT's GPS Monitored and is constantly saying your off the course or to Back up and return to the course WHEN YOU ARE CLEARLY ON THE COURSE! Sadly i don't play down the middle - ever it seems; SO this was incredibly frustrating. Didn't know you could walk - that would be my recommendation to anyone playing Stono Ferry; Course conditions were fantastic.

Would have been better with a more attentive course Marshall

For being nearer to their off-season than peak, the course was in great condition. The greens were recently aerated and dressed but they rolled well, and (despite the heavy rains in the area over the week) the course was not nearly as saturated as you would have planned. The bag drop attendant was very professional and the female pro shop worker and beverage cart attendants at 10:40a also were great. However, this was pretty much the peak of the performance for the staff.

We had the unfortunate scenario where a group of very poor golfers were playing from tee's not suitable for their game, which is fine...up until you cause a +30 minute pace of play. I noticed this was going to happen on hole 1 when it took the group over 15 minutes to get 270 yards away. Instead of making an effort to go to the group and tell them they would need to get the next 17 done at a faster pace, the Marshall on duty pulled up behind OUR group and told us we needed to tee off...despite the group still being in my hitting range.

The entire front 9 was a frustrating patchwork of hurry up and wait on every single shot except while on the green and pretty soon there was a parade of groups stacked behind us. By the 10th hole we had time to go and talk to the Marshall (who did absolutely nothing plead ignorance and tell us to talk to the worker in the proshop), go talk to the guy now working in the proshop about the delay, pick up our lunch (which we had to wait a few minutes for our preordered food) and the group ahead was still only 150 yards off the tee box in the middle of the fairway; taking prolonged practice shots, hitting multiple balls, and stretching...and this was apparently AFTER he sent a message telling them to close the gap or let people play through.

With still no employee willing to speak to the guests causing the back up my group was forced to skip the Par 3 11th hole. Once we got around them there was a completely open road which was a relief but also a disappointment since the afflicting group could've been talked to much earlier. Whereas it took over 2 hours to finish the front it barely took an hour and a half to finish the back. Due to the stopping and waiting one of our players had to stop due to cramping and soreness.

As someone who is a Caddie at Whistling Straits, I know what staff can do to both inform and enforce the pace of play and to see the total hands off approach affect multiple groups ability to enjoy their round was extremely disappointing. It took away from the breathtaking views on the back and the ability to even get the round off on a good note. My family vacations here each year...given this experience it would be a tough sell to return.

Fun Course

First time playing there. Vey surprised at the number of players as we saw few people on the way into the course off RT 17. Friendly staff, great layout and good conditions. Tough greens to putt, all flags were on inclines. Can’t edit to get another crack at playing there!!

Great Classic Southern Course

Stono Ferry was a nice treat, with a great layout that mixed in the traditional pine tree-lined holes winding through neighborhoods with a little riverside golf thrown in. And add in a dash of history - a Revolutionary War battle was fought here. Seriously though, Stono Ferry was a nice treat, definitely a private club with public access. The practice facilities were very nice with a nice back porch on the clubhouse to sit out and enjoy some food and drinks after the round.

Conditions were just okay, with surprisingly long fairways and bumpy greens, but not too surprising for the end of the prime fall season. At $91, perhaps a bit overpriced, but understandable and much cheaper than going across to Kiawah. Unfortunately, the round was excruciatingly slow which took away from some of the enjoyment. Still, a great option and much cheaper than its neighbors on Seabrook and Kiawah.

Must Play if in Charleston

My wife and I stopped in on our way to Kiawah. This course has come along way since I first played it in the 90's. Tee to green is as good as a private course. Great practice facilities and great helpful staff. Great layout as you go out and come back without seeing everyone else that is in on the course. Don't miss out on this one even though it is a little bit of a drive to get there. You won't be disappointed.

Enjoy the views and have fun

Absolutely loved playing The Links at Stono Ferry. The staff was just excellent. They gave us a thorough description of what we could expect, and they just treated us the way we hope to be treated. Major kudos to the staff!

The course was just plain fun. Not overly difficult or long, but not easy, either. The greens and tees were in excellent condition, as were the majority of the fairways. Bunkers were really good, with cream-colored sand that was consistent and playable. Greens rolled true and moderately fast. You'll especially appreciate the back nine, which takes you out near the Stono River and really gets you close to the water. We had such a great time that we immediately made a tee time for the next morning.

My only knock was that the driving range was closed on the second day we were there. It's tough to play at my age when you can't warm up. There didn't seem to be any reason for it, although to be honest, I didn't ask why. Just a slight disappointment in an otherwise wonderful experience. Highly recommended!

Helpful staff, enjoyable round

I am visiting here from Pa and playing a few rounds in February. Every single person working here was helpful and kind. Much appreciated. The greens were I. Really good shape for this month, rolled excellently and consistently. This front nine are wood lined and the back more near the waterway and the back nine was notably more wet. I plugged quite a few shots but that’s not a criticism, it’s the area.

The practice areas were tops, the bar looked well equipped but I didn’t use it.

The course was a good variety of movements and distances. I lost a few balls, my own mistakes. The traps were in good shape and the staff was out pick8ng up divots off the tee and filling and planting the driving range. They seemed to care about the course conditions. The only bad areas was some waste bunkers which some say never should be touched, were a bit worn but then I shouldn’t be able to play a clean iron shot out of them. Just one guys opionion. Some of the tee boxes were a bit worn but it seems normal for a wet course in a wet region.

I really liked the course and my round. It’s not a resort, but I have issues with those prices. I felt this a decent cours and round.

Fantastic

Course and staff were fantastic. I called because I had read some negative reviews. Scott, pro, let me know ahead of time that the greens had been airated about two weeks earlier. The course was still in great shape. I highly recommend the course if you are in the area.

Don’t Blink

The pro shop staff gave a friendly welcome and on a day when local storms kept the crowd away, invited me to play an hour early while keeping my twilight rate. There is nothing offensive about the course but nothing special either. The romantic journey you’re led to expect on the Intercoastal Waterway is limited to one hole, the 13th, followed by a par three shot over a grassy marsh, and younever see the water again. That attraction is oversold and disappointing.

A bot of a let down

Had read so many positive things about Stono Ferry, but the experience left us a little flat. Staff was flexible in that they let us move our tee time up due to predicted p.m. thunderstorms. Starter and ranger were great/friendly guys, and we even saw the ranger out on the course, which seems rare these days. Zipped through first 5 holes but then caught up to threesome in no hurry and who looked to be drinking in late morning. Luckily they stopped after 9. A few neat holes on back nine by the water. Some picturesque vistas. Fairways pretty thin, and greens spotty at best. Course conditions had been built up in previous reviews. Dormant grass also gave impression of a ratty course. Range was almost all dirt. Not horrible experience, but we felt price was more than a few dollars more than it should have been .

Beautiful Views

Course had a great layout that required you to use your whole bag and think off of the tee. front nine works its way around housing developments but still fun holes to play. Back nine is beautiful and has some very scenic holes. Played on a Saturday afternoon so pace of play wasn't great, but were still able to complete before sunset.

Great Course

To be honest I found this course similar to the Kiawah Island resort courses in quality. Great layout, great staff, and greens were in great shape and rolling true. Was playing well until the holes around the lake, play those smart and you can have a nice round. For the price compared to some of the others around it, I definitely like it.

Average course

This is run of the mill kind of course. You play and forget about it in a couple of day. Nothing standout. If you have some time to kill and are looking for something close by. This might be it.
