Grand Canyon University Golf Course
About
Grand Canyon University Golf Course (formerly known as Maryvale Municipal Golf Course) offers an 18-hole track designed by Ted Robinson, Sr. and built in 1961. The par-71 golf course measures 7,269 yards from the championship tees and is open year-round.
The Bermuda grass Grand Canyon University Golf Course gets plenty of shade during the summer, thanks to several onsite trees, and features flat and wide fairways.
The fourth hole, for one example, is a 160-yard par-3 where you'll have to shoot over the water - and past the brick wall that separates the green from the water.

Much improved
Greens are now elevated and extremely good.
Course in great shape, greens were perfect,.only criticism inconsistent sand traps mostly due to not enough sand.
Great Value and tough test.
Poor GCU players
Can’t believe they have their university players on a course like this. I mean that course was dryer than the Sahara. I see why it’s $40 now. Fastest and most firm greens I’ve ever played on. Pretty boring layout.
I’ll go back if it’s $20 but not otherwise
Disappointingly poor condition
The course was in bad summer condition with hard ground and no grass anywhere. Please water this course. It is not enjoyable to play on, especially around the greens.
Ugh
6 hour round. No Marshall's
Fairways are beat and greens are crusty
Huge dead areas .
Hot Dau
We played at 1 pm, hot day but purchased beverages from inside cafe. Pace was poor, no ranger seen during the complete round. Reached the 8th hole par 3, four groups on the hole.
Bunkers were inconsistent in firmness and in some cases, a bit bare. Green speed was great, fairways very good, and overall condition very good. Definitely will play again, an on-course person would help.
Slow play mad it Disappointing
Some good thi gs about this course, conditions, more affordable, nice staff but after almost 4 hours and just finishing the 13th hole we left. Two foursomes waiting on every par 3.... I think the overkill on sa d traps is part if the problem.
Just average
I paid more for this course than wigwam and I would never choose this course over many others especially for the price. It felt like helmet golf and it was slow. The bunkers on this course are ridiculously placed and definitely add to the pace of play. Home 8 was backed up with three groups. No welcome to the course and had to pay for range balls after paying to much to golf this course. We were very disappointed but did golf with two nice fellas which made things more enjoyable. With all the other courses we won’t be back to this one.
Didn't disappoint
Always look forward to golfing here when I visit AZ twice a year. Pace of play was good, teed off on time, was busy and had to wait on most tees but did it in 4 hours and 10 minutes. Small practice area and could be busy with teams there but never missed a chance to loosen up before the round. Proshop is always pleasant and facility is always clean. Most greens are protected by bunkers and most holes have fairway bunkers and most of them are maintained. Will continue to visit everytime I stay in AZ!
If you enjoy sand traps ...
Someone went way overboard with the sand. Every. Shot. Has some sand in play.
In fairness, the sand is the courses' only defense. It's a municipal course that's been re-fitted to be the GCU course.
Not to be too negative, you can have a great time here. EVERYONE was really friendly. They have a great pro shop with cool GCU merch. And hey, your golfing in Phoenix - life could be a lot worse!
5 1/2 hr round
Had a 12:50 tee time on a Friday so was planning on a slower than average round but 5 1/2 hrs is untenable. Didn’t see a single Marshall during the entire round.
Championship course?????
Could be a gem, tee’s and fairways in rough shape. Almost a five hour round. Not as advertised.
Bunkers
There were way too many bunkers and the ones in the fairway were unfair. Almost impossible to get out with any distance because of their depth. Too punitive. Because of this the pace of play was bad. On one hole we were stacked up at least 3 foursomes deep. Won’t play again
Bunkers!
Almost every green was surrounded by sand bunkers. Unless you have a great flop shot, get used to playing from the sand. Course played fast and the greens were quick and hard to hold.
Bunkers
Fairways and greens in good shape. This course has too many bunkers that are particularly penal. Will not play again
