I'd probably play here if it was free, but only after thinking it over for a bit.
For the sake of my fellow golfers, I have to be honest: Shoreline has absolutely the worst course conditions I have experienced in 15+ years of playing golf. And the worst pace of play I have ever experienced. In case you're counting, that's two all time worsts on the same course and in the same round.
There are some negative reviews of Shoreline golf links on this site, but I don't think any of those accurately depict just how painful it can be to play at Shoreline.
Course Conditions: It is truly debatable whether there is more green grass vs dirt/dead grass on this course - I'm being completely serious. I understand things might not always get the care or resources they need on a muni course, but when you begin to have visions of being on the moon or Mars instead of a golf course, you know it's pretty bad. Gopher holes - it is real folks, our furry friends have created a colony on Shoreline golf links, and there are many, many, many on every hole. Think twice before you put that $4 Pro V1x into play! Goose droppings - be forewarned, there is a ton of poop pretty much everywhere on this course. Even if you didn't hit your Pro V1x into a gopher hole, it might end up covered in goose poop. Perhaps the most surprising thing was that all the greens were actually...green. They were also very bumpy and slow, but they were green, I said green!
Pace of play: We had the misfortune of being being a foursome that apparently were competing in the "World's Ugliest Swing" and "World's Worst Comedian" contests simultaneously. Although tempted to hit up on them (or actually over them), it became clear after a few holes that the group in front of them were also contestants in the same contests and the backup was several holes deep. As you can imagine, being forced to wait at nearly every tee box regardless of it was a par 3, 4 or 5, meant that despite trying to keep a reasonable distance, we heard these folks with their foul mouthed tirades 18 times that day - just wonderful.
So it sounds like all doom and gloom, but maybe a few bright spots:
The range has grass tees - yeah I know, after reading the comments above it must sound like I'm joking. I am not. A bit misleading if you hit the range before teeing off, because you will realize after a few holes that the most green grass you will see today was during warmup.
Staff/Restaurant - to be honest, we didn't really have the need to talk to any staff except during check-in and the restaurant looked quite legit. A nice setup that is very conducive for grab and go at the turn. Due to the pace of play, by the time we got to the turn, the grill was cleaning up and only drinks were available. Nothing like a little dehydration while you play the longest round of your life.
Anyways, if you've read this far, I hope you found this brutally honest review useful. For the price Shoreline charges, or actually at any cost, the course conditions and pace of play make it a horrible value. Save yourself and go play anywhere else.
Great Wide Open Course
Shoreline is a spacious course
However keep an eye out for a longer play time.
Expect to join up with other groups or individuals to speed up the game.
And reminder to those holding up the course. Play faster or wave up faster players. It’s a common courtesy and standard.
Good course for the price
Other reviews get a little karen about the course conditions. They seem to be making improvements and it's winter and it's been a very wet one at that. I will agree that pace of play is painful. It's seems like most people walk and that's admirable if you can but pick it up a little or get a cart. Its very unlikely you will get 18 in with any tee time after 12 so maybe next time I'll mentally prepare for a nice slow 9. I will be back but probably not routinely.
Always a nice local place
Come out and play at shoreline.
Just be assertive and pass up those slow groups or you will never finish
Unfortunately there are groups that play way too slow. So make that effort to pass them.
Good Course for the Money
Good Course for the Money the Bunkers sand traps was real hard you club just bounce on the hard ground.
Friday Fun in the Rain
Todays play was fantastic. Nobody out there glass the whole course spaced out very efficiently
Shoreline Golf Links
Course was recently aerated and greens were bumpy. Course needs to remove ground squirrels and fill-in and smooth out the holes, Too many bare spots also that needs reseeding.
Course restrictions
I enjoyed playing here except pace of play. Pro shop stuff are always nice and professional. This time I faced the issue of other golfer smoking “The Marijuana”! I really like to ask all of golf courses to restrict the The M-smoking! Thank you!
Slow pace
Need rangers to pick up pace of play greens were slow and fairways not kept very well!
Shoreline isn’t maintained well
Shoreline has a great layout. The course is very badly maintained. The fairways have patches of mud. The bunkers have no sand. The pace of play is very slow.
5 & half hour round and didn’t finish
This course keeps getting worse and worse. Didn’t realize the San Jose rugby team had its tournament. We were stuck behind an 8-ball team. That’s right, 8 drunken rugby guys playing 4 on 4 scramble each hole, and when we talked to a marshall about it, he said they are too big and drunk to talk sense to. So we teed off at 1:20 pm and were on hole 16 at 7 pm, when it became too dark to play.
Never again at this course.
