La Cantera Golf Club
About
La Cantera Golf Club opened in 1995, when it also hosted one of the oldest PGA Tour events, the Texas Open. It is no wonder the spot was chosen, with its numerous natural water features, mature oaks, and limestone rock outcroppings it provides the perfect terrain for a challenging round. There are also 75 white sand bunkers strategically placed throughout the golf course. In combination with the spectacular views provided by the course’s elevation changes, the course has quickly gained favor as one of the best public-access golf courses in the country.

Fun and Fair
Course was fun and fair with challenging elevation changes and side slopes. First class practice area with new Callaway balls. Staff was friendly and well trained. Greens were mid sized with challenging undulations. Smooth and well maintained. Fairways for the most part were full and firm with just a few small areas were standing water had damaged the grass. 5 tee boxes available so pick your length. The rough was really not an issue unless you were way off then watch out for the rattle snakes! Bunkers were perfect with clean uniform sand. Only improvement would be fringe areas around most of the greens were getting a little sparse making finesse chip shots difficult. I would play here again.
Course is laid out great.
The course has not recovered from the greens dying off in large spots. Not all greens suffered. Around the greens suffered also though. Hopefully they will recover soon. Staff are great and friendly. I would have played another course if I would have known that they had problems with their greens.
Thank you for playing and providing the feedback. We did have a few areas on several greens on the back nine with winter damage. We will be restoring those areas in the near future, and look forward to them being on the level with the rest of the golf course conditions.
Not Worth the Money
I was extremely excited to play this course when visiting San Antonio, TX during February 2023. I have played other courses like TPC facilities and PGA National. This course simply does not compare to the others. Fairways and greens were painted green in more than just a few areas (literally on every hole) and the greens were really slow. For a facility that closed one course (Palmer) to keep the other course (Resort) up to the standards of Tour expectations (their words, not mine), it is no wonder why this isn't a stop for the professionals any longer. A fair price for this course would be approximately $80.
Heckled By Marshal
Played here multiple times and never had an issue until now. Our foursome was only 7 minutes behind pace, which is usual for a resort course such as this. Marshal came onto our green, mid putt, interrupted and told us to hurry up. For as much as you pay at a resort course, it was a very frustrating experience and left us all upset through the reminder of the round. I told the Clubhouse and nothing was done about it, "we'll take your comment into consideration." Don't feel the need to give my money to this course again. Only finished 4 minutes behind pace after all was said and done.
Thank you for playing La Cantera and sharing your feedback. Someone from management will be reaching out about your experience. Thank you again.
Excellent course
One of the best public tracks in the San Antonio area. Wide fairways, large greens, and scenic views. Pricey but worth it.
Beautiful Course! Tough back 9
Pace of play made the course playable and enjoyable. I think I got lucky with the time slot and the fact it was a special rate. No breakfast tacos made it kind of suck but overall great experiencez
Loved it
Course layout was fun,, needed some help moving along slow play. I loved it and would play there again.
Great track!
So first the really good. The course is a former host course for the Valero Texas open. A few holes in and it’s easy to see why. I can’t say enough good things about the layout. If you enjoy bombing drives from elevated tee’s ? You’re gonna love this place . There’s several holes to just grip it and rip it and others that you’ve got to be accurate or leave the driver in the bag. We played the day after an insane thunderstorm front rolled through and dropped about 5 inches of rain in some areas. How it was open at all was impressive! The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming! Had a burger and a beer before teeing off that was delicious also!
Now the not so great.
Pace of play was kind of slow. Now granted that’s partially not their fault because as I mentioned, due to the massive storm the night before. It was cart paths only. Which added at least 45 mins to the pace for our foursome. There were four guys in front of us playing a match like it was the masters or something but they let us through on the tenth tee and we never looked back.
The greens ? Very slow but again. I’m certain they had no way to cut them today given the rain from last night, and asi said, it’s huge credit to their staff that the place was open at all with lush green fairways and full, enormous greens.
All in all ? It’s a fantastic track with challenging holes, and a lot of really fun elevated tee shot holes. Big premium on hitting the fairways and I would absolutely go back, in a heartbeat !
Staff Friendly and Good Layout
150 in the afternoon doesn't justify the course conditions. Def dry and dormant this time of year I get it, but won't be rushing back for that rate..
Overall a cool layout and good scenery.
At Least Play it Once
Fairways were in good condition this time of year. Greens were in good condition but difficult to read and putt consistently. I mean if you’re in San Antonio and you love golf, just get it over with and play it. It cost more than than maybe the overall value you get. However, it’s still a nice layout, still has the nostalgia of having a PGA event there before.
Alamo Bowl Trip
Husky Football fans from Seattle, flew into SA for Alamo Bowl, and La Cantera was recommended to us. Did not disappoint and exceed expectations. AA lost our golf bags, but the staff helped us out with rentals, balls/markers, and extra TLC. Very friendly staff in clubhouse, on course marshals, and in restaurant. Course was in great shape and made for a great round. Would come back frequently, if possible!
Thank you for playing La Cantera on your visit to San Antonio. We are glad you had a great time!
Great golf course in the city
One of the best course in the city. I’m definitely coming back.
Thank you for playing La Cantera. We are glad you enjoyed the experience and look forward to you playing again in the future.
Lovely course which favours a fade shot
The course was generally in good condition although some of the greens are still recovering from problems in the summer. The fairways are generous and certainly favour a right handed soft fade. There are some memorable holes with great views.
Thank you for playing and we are glad you enjoyed your day.
Tough in the wind
We had 15-20 mph winds during the round, which made approaches tricky. Many holes are relatively wide open and inviting for driver. Starter made a big deal about the GPS having distance to pin, but don’t trust it. On 18, GPS had on location at the front, but it was in the back, almost 30 yards further according to my rangefinder. There are a few gimmicky holes, and some with steep up and/or down slopes. Pace of play was right about 4 hours, which was nice.
Thank you for playing La Cantera.
