Pete Dye
Played the Golds (6158/69.5/125) in 4H, 10M with mendel, Matt & Ryan in clear, breezy conditions. Played both courses on an AD UP voucher. An oddity for a 36 hole course layout is that the Player and Dye courses are about a mile apart and all their facilities (restaurant, driving range, clubhouse etc.) are completely separate. I have appreciated the Dye layout more after each round played here. Still not a great layout in my mind, but 18 very solid holes of golf with plenty of variety. OB down both sides of many holes and numerous holes have water that comes prominently into play. However, not a super tight course overall. Most of the landing areas are generous in size, there are just specific shots where there is little margin for error. A conventional Pete Dye layout, with the traditional Dye runoffs around greens, mounds/moguls, water features etc. However, they are tamer here than on most Dye courses I have played. The Bermuda tees were fairly lush, only a few of the par 3's needed divot attention. The Bermuda fairways were fairly lush and well maintained. Few unfixed divots. The Bermuda rough was semi lush and not overly penal. Usually good to play from. The sand traps were dark brown sand/dirt and were decently maintained. The greens were relatively smooth for Bermuda but were at most medium speed. Firm but still held well struck approach shots. The breaks here are not as severe as on most Dye layouts. This course would be difficult to walk as numerous tees are a long way from the last green. From a layout perspective, I feel like a par 70 with only 2 par 5's is a minus. Plenty of water stations on the course and the Beverage cart was out making the rounds. The customer service was excellent from everyone. Good facilities, complementary range balls although the range tops out @ 220 yards. Well above average course in most locales, but middle of the pack by Palm Springs standards. If I had to pick one of the two Mission Hills courses to play, it would be the sister Player course. Recommended = Yes.
Mediocre experience for $140
First impression was the grumpy guy in pro shop. The other staff seemed friendly and helpful. Course was in less than good shape. Greens were nice and quick enough. New carts with no GPS. I thought the golf course needed some TLC in many areas. Other cart in the group died and we had to push it for the last hole. Don't send them out inadequately charged.
Big Disappointment
The staff member who shuttled us to the Pro shop was both rude and dismissive. Was it because I’m a woman? Staff shortages caused us to be late as our group had to wait for the starter to give us cart keys. Course is in okay condition as recent floods have caused several GUR spots and the 18th hole to be closed while repairs are being done. But the biggest issue was when 2 foursomes finished their round and then jumped back in on the 15th hole to play as an eightsome! When we called the Pro shop and reported this we were basically dismissed. We took some photos to verify this but by the time we were done, due to the slow play, the shop was closed.
Unsatisfied
I’ve played the Dye course dozens of time over the last few decades. Usually very nice. This time the conditions were poor and the overall appearance was very rundown
Poor course conditions.
I have played this course a couple times before and it was in good shape. Right now, the range was terrible. Literally no grass to put the ball on. The tee boxes were left long. They were the length of the rough. There were sprayer tracks on all of them so I suspect they were spraying them for some reason and didn’t want to cut them. Imagine putting your tee in the rough and hitting your driver from there. The greens were ok. Very fast, so that was good. They have sodded in a huge amount of the fairway traps, so it looked terrible and you couldn’t play on them. On the good side, it was supposed to be $124 per person but when we got there, they only charged us $89. Makes sense because it wasn’t worth more than that.
Challenging
This course is always a challenge and a treat to play. The green fee was discounted because 18 was closed for bunker renos which I thought was fair. Tee boxes were a little shaggy but minor issue. Always enjoy playing at Mission Hills.
Overrated!
Nice challenging course but fairways mediocre, 18th hole was not available to play but no one mentioned that until we signed in. The only really enjoyable parts were the beer cart lady and the bag transport lady (Christina).
Course was under renovation
Was not indicated at time of booking
Areas in the rough are in terrible shape lots of baren ground
Greens and fairways were perfect
Course was in average condition
The course was bit dry and burned out in spots.
We didn’t know until we arrived that the 18th hole was closed for renovation. This meant the 17th hole was used to play two par 3s (one with a pin in the middle of the fairway).
A bit disappointing for the green fee charged.
Underwhelmed
I have played other Pete Dye courses in the area and I just didn’t think this lived up to his name. There were bunkers that had tractor ruts but no ground under repair markings. Course looked tired not much upkeep
We had high expectations for this course and were disappointed. There is a shuttle that you have to call from the parking lot to pick you up to get to the Pro Shop. We were there called and waited...while we were waiting other golfers arrived with earlier tee times, they asked to go ahead of us and we obliged. The course itself is under construction all through 18, well actually there is really only 17 holes, 18 is closed. You can play 2 par 3's on 17 or one par 4. No mention of the construction or the hole closure when you booked. No beverage cart service. We were waiting for a long time and had people pushing us all day. There were no ball washers on the course or on the cart, garbage's were hiding as well. Very disappointing day.
Great margarita
Very nice layout. Some other reviews had an issue with the condition of the course but we found it in good condition. Very playable but not pristine. Didn’t get to play hole 18 because of bunker repairs but could play 2 balls on 17. Greens immaculate and almost too much sand in bunkers. Not really a snack shack after 9 but a lounge for members so had to use a credit card to pay $2 for some chips. Maybe bring a sandwich with you. Beer cart lady was great and made killer margaritas. Really enjoyed our day.
Extremely Disappointing
I have played this course before but this time was probably my last. 1st) They have to shuttle you and your clubs to the clubhouse which takes so much extra time (and might be worth it if the course was in great shape); 2nd) The staff member dropped my clubs off the cart landing on my club heads. It was frustrating and unnecessary. He just hit the cart beside us with the clubs flipping them off the cart pretty hard; and 3rd) they were redoing the bunkers and we couldn’t play hole 18. It was just very expensive for a poorly maintained course. There are so many great courses to choose from that we will not be playing this one again.
Poor Advertising on Course Remodeling
Conditions at this course have deteriorated over the years, they are clearly putting less money into maintenance and staff, range, etc.. Still a nice layout, solid greens, but ultimately, nothing on this site indicated the 18th hole (their signature hole) was closed for play due to construction. I would not have booked had I known that, given all the golf options around here - really unfortunate and the pro shop indicated they were trying to get this website to post that the 18th hole was closed.
