Throw back Thriller
I grew up in SD and played this course several times when I was young. I lost interest in it years ago when I started hitting the ball harder and got increasingly nearvous about hitting a house. It's importantly to note that the homes are close to the edges of the fairways on several holes and many of those same holes have narrow fairways. That said, the $45 (plus small booking fee) rate for a Saturday morning round was too good to pass up. I played with my friend and one other person we met on the first tee. The pace of play was really good. We waited less than a minute a few times during the 18 hole round.
As for the course conditions, the greens were in good to great shape and rolled fairly true. The fairways were in good to great shape as well. The bunkers were consistent but they were filled with what seemed to be dirt. I agree with a previous reviewer that the bunkers should be improved. That said, I was able to play shots from them with considerable spin because the dirt is so gritty.
This was my first time playing the course since the turf reduction and takeover by JC golf management. The turf reduction has two upsides and one downside. The upsides are that it makes for a slightly more natural coastal desert feel and it means that the grass that remains can receive more water. The downside is that this tough course is less forgiving of wayward shots.
The course is not long even from the blue tees. I consistently hit 265 to 275 yards with my driver and I used driver on only 4 holes. I used several 3 woods and long irons off the tee. The important thing is to hit straight tee shots (200 to 230 yards in most cases) on this shotmaker's course.
My advice is to play this course if you are hitting the ball consistently straight and you can get a good deal. Provided that the pace of play is good, I'd be happy to play this course for as much as $65 on a weekend and $50 on a weekday. As an added bonus, the burger I had a the snack shop was good and plentiful. The par threes are truly challenging and the views from some holes give sweeping views of the surrounding hills covered with boulders.
Final thoughts: This course does not have a driving range but does have a hitting net with 10 or so stalls. The practice green is large and seemed to roll similarly to the greens on the course.
CMR
Rode the Blues (6235/70.6/126) with 3 really nice super seniors. The POP was dreadful, 5H to play Friday morning? The weather was in the 70's, breezy and partly cloudy.
Interesting layout, up/down rolling hills. I would have liked to have played the course before the "turf reduction". IMO, courses with crowned fairways make poor candidates for "turf reduction" projects. The original design of CMR had balls on the outer portion on each side of most fairways funneling toward the rough. When much of the rough is removed, it creates conditions where balls often roll 40-60 yards farther than the course was designed for. Especially true on a course that is so hilly. This creates POP challenges, which further irritates the same players a course in trouble is trying to entice to play there.
The tees were okay, most had decent coverage but are getting thin from a lack of watering.
Same for the fairways and rough. Fairways were more consistent and playable than the rough that is still present.
The sand traps were mediocre to poor. Fine dirt and many were thin.
From tee to green, the course was average to below average. However, the greens were excellent. The putted fast and held shots well. Some of the best greens I have putted on this golf season.
No driving range, they provide nets beside the starter. Friendly Starter. Sorry to hear that this course is scheduled for closure. You can see the bones are there for an above average, hilly, challenging course.
Great course except for the bunkers.
The tee boxes and fairways are pretty nice for being a desert like course. The greens are great. The are fast and challenging. The bunkers don't really have sand. They are hard compact sand/dirt that is extremely hard to get out of especially if you are at a greenside bunker. It's hard to get under the ball. If they would add some sand to the bunkers this would be a great course all around.
Terrible
This course is in absolutely terrible condition. It is due to be shut down on July 8. Do your clients a favor and take it off your web site. Management will take your money and you will be extremely disappointed. Pace of play is fast cause you’ll be the only one on the course.
Great course
Course is in great shape. If only they had a drivng range. My second time playing there, like it better than first time.
Tough course
First time playing the course, fortunately I was grouped with someone that was familiar with the course. Fairways are tight and very hard, you pay a price for missing them. The greens are hard to read, extremely quick and nearly impossible to stick (for me).
Overall a great course, my only complaint is the lack of a driving range. Hitting into a net doesn't prepare you for how your ball is flying that day.
Definitely playing it again
This is a course that you need to play a few times to know where to hit shot. A great deal of blind shots, and challenging elevation changes on approach shots.
But overall a good layout and a FUN course to play!
Good value
Course needs more water to the fairways. The rough is the better surface than the low cut fairways. Greens are wicked fast. Several really nice looking holes. Very nice staff!
My daughters birthday.
We enjoyed the course, nice greens. However, we never saw a marshall nor a cart lady. It took us 5.5 hours to play the 18 and we had people hitting down on us. We let them pass ahead only to find them backed up at yhe next 9 holes.
I don’t play any course that allows 5 some
Unfortunately this place allowed it and ruined my very first round here. Had I known this , I would have not bothered. Going forward I am going to avoid this joint as if it is a plague because I don’t want to spend more than 5 hours to play a course using dirt in lieu of sand in its bunkers -among numerous other corner cutting things. Although it is impossible to fathom the thinking process of the genius minds working in the pro shop, today it must went like this : gee, we only have less than 40 customers a day, how about sticking in a 5 some noob players in the middle to ensure all customers behind them playing a 5 hours plus round, won’t that be fun?! Surreal!
Great course but slow play
Beautiful course with lots of elevation change. Very fast greens with texture and some tough pin placements. Friendly well organized staff. Limited practice facilities, hitting off mats into a screen a few feet away. Play was extremely slow. After 4 hours we finished#14. Had to wait for every shot. I had to leave for the airport and didn't play last 4 holes. When I complained to staff, I was told their pace of play is 4.5 hours. Really? My group would have been 5+. Great course to play if you have all day.
Great Course and Pretty Challenging
Gorgeous, very well kept greens, and lots of challenging holes (bring extra balls). Great views of the canyons as well. GPS carts were nice minus the ads.
Challenging course
This is a beautiful course and is well maintained. Hard to hit par without having played before. We'll be back, but bring extra balls!
One of the course doesn’t mind playing over and over again.
It is a challenging course requiring precision placement, and using all clubs in your bag. The fairways are undulating but very well kept. Greens are usually fast and also very good condition. You don’t get tired of playing here, because you always think you can do better next week.
Up and down
Fast and smooth greens. Lots of elevation changes and blind shots. I was lucky to play with people who knew the course. Course was in decent shape. I would definitely play it again.
Bunkers Have Sand!
Just got done playing CMR and they have all new bunker sand! Yahoo!!
Tough course....place seems to have seen better days
Short but tough....small greens with a lot odulation...on top of that the greens were rock hard . Tee boxes and bunkers were in poor shape. Challenging and Intresting course just wish it was kept up better.
