Starter was clueless, no martial on course. The golf cart ran out of juice on 3rd hole, had to call in for another cart. Rough way too long resulting in lost balls. Tees were in very poor condition. Fairways were sparse at best, greens were decent. Probably a good course at one time but more like a cow pasture at present. Obvious some flood damage which was not a fault of course but little effort apparent to repair and restore course. Would not play it again.

I live very close to Carlton Oaks but haven't played there recently because of the condition. But after all the rain we've had I expected the course to be in much better condition, but it wasn't. The tee-boxes are uneven, the fairways just so-so, and the greens pretty bad and no one seems to know how to fix ball marks. The bunkers had large weeds growing out of them and some didn't have rakes to clean up. I wish they would take serious care of this course because I live so close and would love to play it more. But its been bad for years.

I have played a few courses out here in San Diego since moving, but aside from Torrey Pines, I can't think of another course that tops the design and layout of this one! Challenging and unique! If you're a golfer looking to test your skills, look no further. For the price, you definitely cannot beat this course. Definitely gonna be coming back often!

Could be a great course but it lacks something (money?) to shine.

All the water obstacles are empty and its only mud. Some bunkers are in the same condition.

A shame, could be a pretty good course.

Great layout if you're a fan of Pete Dye. Course is very challenging and is loaded with the usual PD visual tricks. Greens were nice and fairways okay but the tees could use some work. The rough and the other areas mostly not-in-play look pretty unkept. It spoils the aesthetics but not the playability. If you love a challenge by all means play it.

We were excited to play this course after the San Diego Rain. Since they were charging full price ($75.00) we hoped that meant the course was in good condition. ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! The majority of the course was swampy mud. The greens were nice and I would say it will be a legit $75.00 round in 2 months.

Very Upset I wasted $75.00, for what should have been a $35.00 round. Our cart actually got stuck in the mud when being forced to drive around a flooded cart path - since the water was over the tires.

Also, there were so man solos playing that the course of play was either too slow ahead of us, or our 4some constantly had single playing up behind us.

Love the course layout - but charge a fair price when you know the the condition your course is in. VS overcharging and having us find out after the fact while playing.

The Pete dye design is spectacular but the course condition was marginal. A lot of bare spots in the rough and just messy looking. The tee boxes were marginal some having bare spots as well. The greens were in fairly good condition and rolled true. I would play the course again because I love the layout, it's a great challenge and requires placing of Tee shots to provide proper angles into the green. You can't just blast away on every hole. My criticisms of the course may have been precipitated by water restrictions limiting the greens keepers ability to maintain the course condition. Had an awesome turkey sandwich from the grill may go back for another even on a non-playing day.

the layout is excellent. tight fairways. greens when fast are tough. bunker condition is very inconsistent, heavy sand in spots and thin in others. the pace of play was quite slow (just under 5 hours) due to holiday week. the staff gets the job done but aren't all that warm. this could be a fabulous property with better conditioning and a more professional staff as opposed to young people having after school jobs. good value for the money, but this course always leaves me with the feeling of what could be.

Thank you

Many of the recent reviews are praising the improved conditions of Carlton Oaks.

It is still rough around the edges, but most of the playing areas are in solid shape. The green surrounds were overseeded for the first time this fall, and they're green and lush for players this winter.

The golf course can be a beast if you're not on the right tee boxes. Some of the par 4s are long or tight or both. It's a tournament-style test for anybody. There's water and boarded bunkers lurking at every turn. Good luck shooting your handicap.

I stayed at the lodge and found the rooms to be nicely updated and large. Overall, my first visit to Carlton Oaks was a pleasant surprise.

I haven’t played here in quite a few years as there were some historic issues. The course was in great shape and the greens were solid. The one area that needs some TLC are the bunkers (I found quite a few), many were wet and hard. Overall we had a great experience.

in regards to amenities, we ventured to the restaurant/bar for some libations and was elated to find out that it was Happy Hour (since I had to pay). The service was attentive and friendly, the beverages were delivered promptly and the Siracha wings were superb.

I have been playing this course for some 30 years. It has had its ups and downs over the years. But I am here to say that it is back to championship conditions. All 18 greens are in perfect shape. The fairways are some of the best in the county. And the course is just generally one of the more challenging around and makes you a better golfer by playing it. Plenty of tees to choose from for level of comfort. The bar and restaurant serve great food and have plenty of beers to choose from. Sometimes you play a course and wonder if your green fees were worth the price of playing, and for Carlton Oaks, the answer is YES.

Very challenging and attractive layout, mature tree- lined fairways, water hazards, "Dye style" bunkering, smooth greens rolling at an average pace. Played on a Tuesday afternoon- after a group of older gents allowed as to play through on the 8th, the course was wide open so we finished well before dark. The layout is what makes this course a gem... very challenging, even for the single digit index player.

This course is one of the best layouts in SD. With 5 or 6 different tees to choose from, you can't go wrong here. Greens in perfect shape. There are some issues in certain fairways. But traps are good. The bar has amazing beers on tap and probably one of the best food options for a course in SD. Play early and often! On a side note, course is very walk-able, hardly any elevation changes.
