Lakewood Golf Club
About
Lakewood Golf Club is one of the South's premier golf destinations. Opened in 1961, the course has hosted the New Orleans Open 26 times over the years. Beautiful cypress and oak trees frame the golf course, providing a beautiful backdrop throughout the round. When Ron Garl renovated the course in 2009 he managed to obtain its original character while modernizing the layout with new fairways, tee boxes, and greens. Strategically placed bunkers and fairway contouring were also added. Lakewood Golf Club is owned by the New Orleans Firefighters Pension Fund and as a tribute to New Orleans Firefighters, the final hole was redesigned and renamed "Fire in the Hole." Called so because the traps are arranged in a set of flames against a backdrop of red sand. You won't find anything like the bunkering on this par 4.

This course is great
I've already started looking for another tee time here.
Not worth it. Poor conditions. Don’t recommend
This course is only worth $10 round.
Tees very rough shape
Greens poor. Overseeded. Different grass growing in places.
Sandy traps poor
Fairways bare and some places chunky
Disappointing that this course is not maintained
Could be a lot better
Course layout is awesome — greens are extremely dry and sandy.
Tee boxes are garbage.
They really need to fix their irrigation system because man was that dry and inconsistent
Leading with the negatives — positives:
Layout is awesome
Staff is great
Price was good
Was fun but could have been so much better
Not in its normal shape
Typically Lakewood is in great shape with regard to tee boxes, fairways and greens. The tee boxes had some bare, uneven spots. The fairways were a little bare but I attribute this to a lack of rain this year. The greens were fast, which I like, but had several sandy spots.
The staff is always great and I really like the layout.
Overpriced
Friendly handicappers course. Wide open. 5.5/10 course
Did a golf trip to New Orleans. Learned on the way that the south has been experiencing a drought… and it showed. To be fair I am not going to rate or comment on the course conditions. Instead, given the rest of my experience I am choosing to assume that with some rain the course conditions would be fantastic, and I do look forward to returning one day to find out.
Things I Liked
- Really great customer service. The gentleman checking me in was very helpful in getting me ready to get out and golf.
- The greens were in good shape and rolled very fair.
- Holes #17 and #18 are demanding. Everything before that I would consider to be golfer friendly.
- The fleur-de-lis and fire flame bunkers are unique.
Things I Did Not Like
- Non-resident rates. Though I would rather pay the course directly, that level of mark-up led to me retreat and purchase an online deal.
Thing Important to Me
- Very walkable. I wouldn’t take a cart to play this course.
- Cool branded ball marker.
- There were water coolers out on the course.
I was asked if I would recommend course to friends. I was disappointed in the greens. But I do understand because of the heat wave that’s going through New Orleans right now that they’re struggling like everyone else is greens. Fairways and bunkers were all in pretty good shape.
One of the best in the NOLA area
Always a great course to play. Never played a round here where the course was in bad shape. Some of the best greens in the New Orleans area, and that includes TPC in Avondale and English Turn. Very reasonable prices too for the quality of the course. Plus it's owned by the Firefighter's Pension which is great to support. If you're visiting NOLA and want to play this is the one I would recommend.
Great / Chilly Round
Course was in great shape. Greens seemed to have just been sanded which threw me off some but otherwise had a great round.
I was EXTREMELY disappointed with this course. The Tee Boxes were beyond HORRIBLE. I would really like my money back
Weedeater Please
The course has grass that is so high, it's a danger. I know the course is wet, but they could put some guys out there and get that rough down. Tee boxes are spotty. The greens are pretty good. Don't miss the fairway or you may never see your ball again. There is high grass on and around bunkers. Approaching the signature 17th green there is grass at waist level. I am hopeful the course gets back in shape. Until then I probably won't be playing there.
Lakewood
We had to wait an hour to play because of their lighting detection system. Not their fault, rules are rules. Greens were ok. They had been aerated and still a little sandy. The rough was too long. When you lose 3 balls 5 feet off the fairway, something isn't right. We played for $33 on the twilight rate. Absolutely worth that at that price. Get the mowers going and clean up that rough.
