Style Desert
Par 72
Length 6729 yards
Slope 129
Rating 71.9

The Tonto Verde Golf Club offers two uniquely testing 18-hole championship golf courses, each featuring marvelous vistas, smack dab in the middle of the Arizona desert, which have earned honors for their design and playability. The golf courses were designed by David Graham and Gary Panks, who kept the features created by nature when they put together the Peaks golf course, which measures 6,744 yards.

The two golf courses at the Tonto Verde Golf Club feature desert-style target-golf designs, but the designers ensured that golfers of all levels would be able to play them.

The Peaks golf course at the Tonto Verde Golf Club is laid out shorter and skinnier from the tees than its sibling, the Ranch golf course; however, it doesn't offer any less of a challenge for golfers of all levels.

Conditions Were Top Notch But Greens Too Firm

Tonto Verde – Ranch Course is closer to the Tonto National Forest. You have many shots with the mountains in the backdrop. Compared to the Peaks Course, the Ranch Course has more rough before the desert, making it more playable. However, it does have more bunkers and 6 transition areas. These areas may require you to hit less club off the tee.

The course is in outstanding shape. The greens were slightly softer than the Peaks course but still really firm. You still did not need a ball mark repair tool. My favorite holes are 7, 14 & 15.

The staff is always friendly at Tonto Verde. The conditioning of the course is the best. Again, the firm greens make it difficult to score.

Impeccable Conditions With Greens Being Too Firm

Tonto Verde – Peaks Course is a private course in Rio Verde, AZ. There are many reasons to like this course. From the friendly staff, to music playing on the practice green and a board showing the stimpmeter ratings of the greens you are about to play.

The conditioning of the course is about the best you can find. The greens are very smooth and putted nicely. The only issue I have with the greens, is that they are way too firm. You never leave a ball mark, your ball can bounce as high as the flagstick and your ball is constantly rolling off the green.

There are numerous holes that have the Four Peaks mountains in the backdrop of your shots. Holes 6, 9, 13 & 17 were my favorites. The Peaks course is tighter than its sister course the Ranch. It has less rough before the desert starts. It only has 4 transition areas (rocky, water run-off areas) compared to 6 on the Ranch. You must pay attention to these, as your drive may roll into these. May force you to hit less club off the tee.

Love playing the Peaks course. Conditioning is superb. However, the overly firm greens makes it very difficult to score on the course.

Way too slow

I've played many rounds here on both courses & it never gets any faster. Glacial pace of play takes all enjoyment out of round. Courses are great, but it's hard to get into a round that permits napping.

Good Condions But Greens Extremely Firm

I played the Ranch course two days earlier, and their greens left no ball marks, When we played the Peaks course, your ball left small ball marks. Your ball would still roll 15-20 yards after hitting the green. Needed to hit 1 to 2 less clubs and front hole locations required your shot to land in the fairway first to get it close.

The teeing boxes were in great shape. Greens were also in great shape and were fast and smooth. The tee markers design matched the 4 peaks in the background on holes 6 and 17. Very pretty.

This course seemed more narrow than the Ranch course. It had transition areas too but did not come into play off the tee. Many of the cactus had been hit by balls and had numerous holes in them.

The staff was very friendly and efficient. The complex has a real grass putt-putt course which is so much fun to play.

Good Conditions But Greens Extremely Firm

Playing the Ranch Course is very different from playing in the MidWest. Their greens were the firmest greens I've ever played on. Your ball would leave no ball marks and roll at least 20-25 yards on the green. You needed to play 1 or 2 clubs less. If the pin was up front, you needed to land your ball in the fairway first to get it close. Their fiarways were not overly firm like thier greens

The individual teeing boxes were in outstanding shape. The greens were extremely firm and were in great condition. The putted smooth and fast. The holes had the edges painted white which was a nice touch.

You need to really pay attention to the GPS. Many transition areas come into play off the drive. You need to hit less club off the tee.

Most of the holes are flat and they all look similair. My two favorite holes were the short par 4. 14th hole, followed by the pretty par 3, 15th hole.

The staff was very efficient and friendly. The other great thing about this facility is they have a free (real grass) putt-putt course. So much fun.

This place gets it

I can't say enough good things about this place. When you arrive at the course, you can immediately tell that you aren't in Scottsdale anymore. We played at 7:00 AM so it was very quiet and still as well as being 10 degrees cooler than in the city. There was hardly anybody there. The range was limited to 120 yards as it was under construction, but at least it wasn't closed completely. No beverage cart in the summer either, however we were told ahead of time so we could stock up before we went out. If you can get past that, everything else about this place is awesome. The course conditions are PURE!! Greens were so smooth and quick. Fairways and tee boxes were green and well manicured. The rough is full and lush. The views on the course are stunning! So many great panoramas of the mountains. We played in 3.5 hours and hardly saw anyone else all day on a Sunday morning. I can't wait to go back!

Greens in great shape

The course recently hosted a tournament and it’s in great shape. The greens are very smooth. Any burned spots on the fairway are marked under repair. If you haven’t played here, the course is very scenic. The holes are challenging. There are 5 sets of tees so you can play the right set for you. The course is a little remote but worth the drive.

Hidden Oasis

Second time playing the course and was in great shape. Has the feel of a private club, out door patio over looking water complex, 18 hole putt putt course, nice practise area. The members are very friendly & staff too. Played the white blue combo at around 6300 yards, as a 11 handicap shot a 83 so picked the right tees. Good mix of holes, don't need driver on every hole unless your a bomber. Greens roll great & are very tricky. Great mountain back drop views. All in all a nice track to play.

never seen anyone after the check in at pro shop

We arrived really early so we had a great lunch with Dominique as our server. She was extra friendly and the food was great. From there on our experience was not very good. Told in the pro shop that the starter would get us going and the beverage cart would be available all day out on the course. Never seen either so glad at least there was water on the course. When the temp hits 90+ a beverage cart is a must. The course was in fair condition with lots of dead spots. We played six different courses and this one was in the worst condition. Go for the food and leave to golf at a better venue.

Father and Son outing.

The course was in great shape and the greens were not too fast or too slow, just right for us. We enjoyed the signature holes on the back nine the most, especially the drivable par 4. The Club house and pro shop was well furnished, and a very pleasant experience. All of the staff was remarkably pleasant even though we were non members.

Nice course, staff not so nice

The course is in great shape! It's a very fair course, not one of those target courses. The starter was rather rude. He kept his eye on our group at the range, like he didn't like us being there. We decided to go up to the first tee about twelve minutes before our start time. He followed us up there and chased us away saying "you're too early, there's another group before you." We went back to the practice area and waited until he allowed us to go up there. The group before us never showed up and we had a twosome behind us hot on our tail. If they don't like offering hot deals they should stop. We were all dressed in appropriate golf attire. My husband has a 4 handicap, so it wasn't like we were a group of hacks.

Excellence

Me and my wife just started playing again after a medical sabbatical.
We had a wonderful time, everyone was very gracious and eager to please.
Everything from the condition of the practice area to the clubhouse, the restaurant,
and the pro shop was top notch.
We played the Ranch course, and it was in spectacular condition!
We will be making frequent visits to this club for meals, drinks as well as enjoy
playing the courses as well.
Thanks again for having such a professional and prestine establishment.

Bland

First word that comes to mind is "bland." Alot of repetitive holes - hit it 260 straight away, then carry a waste area to the green. Very wide landing areas off the tee made for some overall uninteresting holes. Houses line the fairway but aren't really in play. Conditions were nice, staff was friendly and greens ran true. Overall, it's nowhere near the ~$150 price tag typically found online.
