The Talon at Grayhawk Golf Club, designed by past U.S. Open champion David Graham and architect Gary Panks, offers excitement and drama. It ranks among Arizona's top daily-fee courses and is one of the Top 10 You Can play in the U.S., according to Golf Magazine. Several top events have been played on the golf course, including Andersen Consulting World Championship semifinals and finals, FBR Open pro-ams, and the Hospice of the Valley Pro Am.

The Talon at Grayhawk Golf Club delivers vistas of the McDowell Mountains and Phoenix and Scottsdale skylines. The course blends into the desert. The back nine plays around box canyons, while Saguaro cacti and Mesquite, Palo Verde, and Ironwood trees, along with indigenous flowers, are the scenery.

After a round on the Talon at Grayhawk Golf Club, recharge at Quill Creek Café, with Southwest-spiced American eats and vistas of the course and those McDowell Mountains from the dining room and patio.

Fantastic Condition

I am very confused as to why this course only has 3.1 out of 5 stars. We played 5 courses in Phoenix over the weekend including quintero, desert mountain, and wickenburg ranch and I think this one might have been my favorite. The course was immaculate. Greens were perfect. Fun yet challenging layout but scoreable. I am a 9 handicap and finished with an 86. Several D1 college golf teams were on the range so it was fun watching someone hit golf balls like they are supposed to be hit for a change. =). My only complaint was that I feel it is a $200-$250 course and not a $330 course. But obviously they have no trouble filling the tee sheets at $330 so good for them!

golfpass rating absurd

My buddy invited me to come up to Greyhawk to play Talon, thought I’d check the golfpass rating just for grins. That 3.6 rating is not only stupid it’s just plain absurd. 64% recommended? Ridiculous. You tell me, do you think the NCAA Championship would play a 3.6 rated course? Not. Greyhawk is a legit 5 star championship course in every sense. The conditions today (early April) were just perfect. Is it a little pricey? Yeah a little. But there aren’t many places anywhere that overseed from edge to edge like they do here, not even TPC Scottsdale, who host the PGA every Feb. Perhaps the whiners rating it so low don’t like to pay what it costs for this level of golf. Regardless, suffice it to say at Greyhawk you’ll get pristine, manicured, 5 star championship golf on beautiful green grass all winter long, even if you have to pay a little extra for it. Did I mention the beautiful setting and nice facilities? Just ask Tom Lehman, who was hanging on the veranda w/family today.

Over Priced

I really like the layout of the Talon course but I was so disappointed on the course conditions. There were burnt spots everywhere and dead spots of grass near the greens. I know this is summer conditions but neither course at Grayhawk is worth the price! Go play somewhere else!

Scenic and challenging but a little pricey

Talon is a pretty course that is also very conveniently located just north of the 101. It is a little pricey at $85 per person in June. In good shape mostly with one exception and a little soggy in most of the low spots. The back 9 is much more memorable than the front with driveable par 4 13th and the island green 17th standing out. Not overly long but the greens are tricky. Staff wasn't particularly friendly but it might have been the 107 degree heat. Clubhouse, restaurants, practice facilities, & clubhouse are all top notch. Would play here again but not at in season prices.

Fun Experience

Played here with a group and one of the guys had me as his guest, so I got a reduced rate of like 90 bucks. The course is really cool and the starting area is playing 70's rock like Van Halen, ZZ Top, etc.... on speakers which was cool. Carts have no windshield and this time of year it can be coller and windy. I had a frogger portable cart cover or I would have been miserable. Very expensive brews and cigars. 4 aluminum bottles was $27. 6 inch long Punch cigar was $17. Saw some wild life due to some errant tee shots into the desert. Wind and fast greens were brutal. I'm a 7 handicap and shot 89.

First Class Arizona Golf

Talon at Grayhawk is a first class Arizona golf experience. Outstanding practice facility, great pro shop, friendly people, fantastic breakfast and lunch, all supporting a course that is challenging while still being very playable. Greens were firm, rolled very true, were quick but not extremely so. Fairways were wide enough that we were not afraid to pull out the driver at all.

Grayhawk Golf Club: The Talon Course by Gary Panks

Grayhawk offers golfers much what Troon North or The Boulders does: The Original Intent of High End Daily Fee golf. It's all about the Country Club for a Day vibe. Now into their 25th year of operation, Grayhawk's Talon course is ALL you want from the appropriate tee. The course designers are David Graham and Gary Panks and I'm pretty sure that the course is very much like it was when it opened in 1994. Tipped out, it is only 6.973 yards long. But it slopes at 143, so it has plenty of strength in its grip. For most good players, the second tee at just over 6,400 yards and sloped at 134 makes sense.

Driving can be tight, so think about something other than driver on a few of the holes. Pay strict attention to pin locations on the approach, as that may be the primary difficulty you will find on the Talon. Missed greens can add strokes blindingly fast. Even so, one you are on the putting surfaces, you will face many a multi-tiered proposition, with no lack of speed.

The sister Raptor course is certainly worth playing and offers a slightly different look... less of the ubiquitous box canyons that pepper theTalon property, but more tree lines and claustrophobia. However, before you tackle that Tom Fazio design, hit the clubhouse for some food and beverage. Phil's Grill and the Quill Creek Cafe are spectacular places to hang out. Twenty five years ago, facilities like Grayhawk were the dreams of visionaries. Today, they are the Gold Standard by which many are judged.

Phenomenal Desert Golf

Went out as the first time of the day on a Thursday - finished as a foursome in under four hours! Every green and every fairway were perfection. Some fun risk reward holes, some challenging par 3's - Grayhawk is my kind of track for sure. For what it's worth, practice facility was world class too.

Great Clubhouse/ Course not spectacular

We had to play the Talon because the Raptor was closed for overseeding and the Talon also getting ready for overseeding. Just looking at the Raptor which was set to open two days after we played, it looks green and spectacular.
Back to the Talon. Simply said, there was really nothing to distinguish this golf course from any I've played in the area. It reminded me a lot of Florida golf courses with homes lining the fairways and nothing really memorable. The fairways are generous and players of all types can have fun. Long hitters can bomb away and the middle tees can get challenging with 5 of the par 4's measuring more than 400 yards.
The signature hole is #17 which is an island green very similar to #17 at TPC Sawgrass. Other than that, I was still happy to be playing golf but don't need to go back again.
I was impressed with the clubhouse and it's setting as it is a great place for meal and to hang out after you're done playing. I could easily spend an afternoon there watching a game, eating, socializing and taking in the AZ weather.

This is what Arizona golf is all about

If you were to look up "Arizona Golf" in Websters...there would be a picture of Greyhawk. This is Arizona target golf at its best. The landing areas were still generous and the greens were receptive. You can score here and if you can manage the par 3's which oddly were all 160 yds spot on - it can salvage a good round. I had birdie putts on all and couldn't convert- settled for pars. The greens require a slide rule....they break towards the mountain and are fast. Break away from the mountain and they are slow. We played with a local and that was very helpful. If you go play both Talon and Raptor.

The Talon is tough!

The day we played it was cart paths only so it was a tiring day, yet we played as a twosome in 3 1/2 hours. This is a good golf course that players better than I will enjoy. I would not recommend this course to beginners OR intermediate players. The greens are sectioned into small landing areas and if you are not on the correct part of the green, Good Luck! The Talon is not too long from the appropriate tees, but you had better be accurate.

Incredible

I loved this course, I only had the chance to play the Talon but will be back in a few months to play the Raptor. I loved every aspect of this course. Clubhouse is incredible, the bar and restaurant area is extremely nice, great tees and greens. Booking my tee time was easy on their website and they treated us like we were at the Ritz. Private club feel at a public course. I love the rock n roll driving range, its a very neat piece to the course and something I look forward to checking out again. Perfect tees and greens, bunkers were top notch and I couldn't recommend this course more.

Awesome course, great restaurant

I came out to play this course while visiting family and also played Troon, as well as Sunridge Canyon. The course was great, staff was friendly for the most part. Food and restaurant was amazing. Greens were a bit slow, pace of play was not bad but paired with a threesome and was stuck waiting on last few holes.

Overrated

I believe both Grayhawk courses are overrated. I have never played a course where at least once per hole someone in my group says "you should play a provisional" and I have been playing golf for 43 years. I played with a guy who took 5 unplayable lies on the same hole. I get more mud balls here in one round than I get playing during an entire winter in Seattle. This is course is over rated and I will never play this course again when there is better alternatives and challenging courses in the valley such as Southern Dunes and Quintero.

Do Not Recommend this Course

Grayhawk has placed signs up on the course advertising that they conserve water. You would not know this by playing the Course. I have played this course 3-Times in the past nine months and the fairways are saturated to the point they are impossible to make clean contact with a golf ball. On impact an Iron embeds itself into mud. I would not recommend this course to my worst enemy.

Great course with a challenging back 9

Super golf course from start to finish. Well designed holes with stunning views of surrounding mountains. Course grew progressively more difficult as the round progressed with a series of long par 4's and long par 3's on the back 9 that make bringing hole a good score a real challenge.
