About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2018.
The Golf Club at Vistoso in Tucson has never seemed willing to cower in the presence of its resort-course cousins. Paloma and Ventana are golf resorts, but the Golf Club at Vistoso is just a golf course, and a fine one at that. This Tom Weiskopf-designed layout was a "readers write-in" Golf Magazine's "Top 100 you can play," and is a "sneaky" favorite among locals and visitors alike. The layout is nowhere near as penal as Ventana or La Paloma, and if you can find better greens in the greater Tucson area, let us know. Take note of the 166-yard, par-3 third hole -- on a clear day (there are only 323 of them) you will have an amazing view of the north side of the Santa Catalina Mountains.

Target golf on Steroids
Played the Blacks (6872/72.1/143) as a single in slightly less than 3H. The weather was already HOT, clear with little wind even playing early.
Much of the man made extras added look very nice. Plenty of restrooms/water stations and many of the tee boxes have been built up, all framed with beautiful stone work.
Things you need to know about this layout going in:
1)This is definitely NOT a course for beginners.
2)There will be numerous forced carries even from forward tees.
3)The course is not well marked for yardages and there is no GPS on the carts.
4) Numerous risk/reward holes where knowing the layout is a must if you are going to be aggressive here.
5) This is target golf to the extreme. On numerous holes you play long enough to get over one area of desert scape but still play short enough to lay up to the next area of desert scape.
The Bermuda tees were extremely nice, almost immaculate with few unfixed divots. A few had low spots where I needed to move to get level lies.
The Bermuda fairways were probably 80% lush, with the other 20% ranging from thin to hardpan. They obviously have had issues with the heat. And the change was not gradual, you could go from great to horrible within a few yards.
The Bermuda rough was mostly lush and nice to chip out of around the greens.
The sand traps were beautifully designed but not well maintained. They ranged from crusty/thin to okay with a decent amount of sand.
The Bermuda green complexes are large and well maintained. They putted medium slow but were reasonably smooth for Bermuda and firm. More ball marks than I remember from my 1st round here.
Beautiful clubhouse, quick/efficient check-in, they got me right out before my scheduled tee time. Cart gal came by, everyone encountered was very pleasant/courteous.
Seeing the layout once assisted tremendously with several holes that bend or have semi blind shots. 3 less penalties and 6 total shots better than my 1st attempt, mainly from having at least a little course knowledge. Recommended = yes.
I didn't play at this course because there is no course it's abandon
The staff wasn't great because there was no staff the course was terrible its just dead grass, the prices were great tho because it's free to get in but you can't do anything in there because it's abandoned. Great walk though kinda cool because they didn't even take some stuff with them.
Got to golf
Course in the good shape ,starter was very helpful , friendly . Good value for the money
Amazing Value!
Great course in great shape! Can’t beat it for the price. Nice views as well!
Good layout
First time playing this course. Course layout is outstanding but the conditions of the course is just average to good. The roughs are green and lush but the greens look terrible and are medium speed at best. Make sure one selects the proper tees as there are many forced carries and the par 3 ‘s all are long. The only other negative was the pace of play. Marshall was present and trying to get pace up but when one has poor players playing from the wrong tees not much he can do. Would recommend course if in area but not a destination course
Stay out of the bunkers
Great course. The only downside was the bunkers. I'm used to sand which was not presenf. Maybe playing out of the desert. is part of the charm but I prefer sand rather than hard pack
Would play again
Course in good condition. Had some really nice golf holes. Would definitely play again.
Great course
This is a really great course. I can’t believe it was as cheap as it was. Conditions were awesome! Fast greens and beverage cart was pretty frequent. I would definitely go again, soon.
Difficult challenge
Course is in great shape. It is not for those who worry about loosing balls. It is difficult, but fair. However, Pace of Play they day we played was terrible. 5+ hour round. No marshal to keep play moving. Waiting 15 min on some tee boxes. That is unacceptable.
This coarse has a great layout
Great track. Great condition. The only knock is the bunkers need more sand and the driving range closed at noon for maintenance. Would have played another 9 if pro shop and restaurant had not closed early.
Challenging- every shot counts
The carry from the tee seemed to keep getting longer as the day wore on. Lost three balls. Some fairways require a carry over the desert on both the tee shot and the second shot. Beautiful course. Bunkers are course, hard sand. Bring a few extra balls.
Great desert setting.
Lots of desert, gotta be strong off the tee and the traps are hard and impossible to get a club under the ball. Greens very fast and in great shape
Great Layout
One of my favorite Tucson area courses. Challenging track, especially the back 9. Fairways in very good shape. Greens as well, except 1st 4-5 holes have poanna issues. Staff very accommodating. Very good practice facilities. No on-course refreshment cart.
Great course conditioned
Played as a single in perfect weather. Front nine in less than 2 hrs., but very slow on back nine with slow, slow foursome in front of me. Waited on every shot ( I was a single, so that was part of it). Fairways were in close to perfect condition, and greens were true, pretty fast and in very good shape except for many, many un fixed ball marks. Why don't people just fix them??? There are forced carries and a few holes seem a bit "tricked up" when there doesn't seem to be a reason, but overall this course is challenging, fair and fun to play.
Long for Ladies
Had to have perfect drive to have a chance on many holes. Sand traps brutally hard and impossible to get under the ball. Greens Fast, I say Fast. Great course will play it again. There were funky purple temporary tees forward of the forward tees. Build ‘em post’em or take ‘em out.
Good course layout and challenge but need more stand in traps and more ball washers.
Poor Condition
Grass clippings in all fairways.
Long grass in rough.
Poa in all greens.
Sand traps not groomed.
love this golf course,Great price today
e-mail special $20.18 to play and the course had a lot of players/groups today bunkers have been improved and where nice,Again still need to have barber poles on each hole to show 150/100 and maybe 200 yards to greens, they had a couple days of frost several days ago and it is showing in the greens very bumpy But they should come around(if no more frost) in a week or so,but it is still worth playing this course, the staff is great and the outside service guys are wonderful
Wait for Monsoon Rain
Course was in terrible shape. Every fairway was brown and burnt out. We played this course a little over 3 weeks ago and it was great. WHAT HAPPENED? We asked several employees and they said a main water pump burned out and no watering of fairways for nearly a week. They also said corporate cut the water budget! We usually enjoy this course and play it many times during summer. Will not play again until the fairways are back in decent shape. With current conditions not even worth $24.
