Beautiful course
Great scenery, smooth greens, even the carts ride smoothly. No complaints, couldn’t ask for better golf.
Decent Round
For the money this course is always decent. Fairways were a little long and furry, rough is inconsistent. Greens were good though, and overall it was an enjoyable round
What a difference 6-8 months made
My group played Birkdale about 6-8months ago and “swore” we wouldn’t play it again ever, because the conditions were so bad. Everything from the tees with no grass, to the fairways with more bald areas than Charles Barkley’s head, to the greens with so many unrepaired ball marks that every putt was an exercise in futility, it was a complete disaster.
Then a friend said he played there in April and things had really changed. So reluctantly we went to see for ourselves and was extremely surprised in how much better the conditions are now. Tee boxes with new sod, fairways with cut and trimmed grass and redone greens with (we believe) a different grass that holds up excellently to the wear and tear of the heavy play that Birkdale gets. Major KUDOS to the greens keeper and his/her staff for the effort in pulling a great layout like Birkdale from the craphole it had become to being one of the best in Richmond We will gladly put Birkdale at the top of the list of courses to play around Richmond.
The only complaint we have is that we played behind a foursome that must have all been absolute beginners that never heard of allowing much faster groups to play through. We waited on EVERY SINGLE SHOT for all 18 holes. A Marshall would have helped but alas none were around.
Sunday Round
This is a great run course. Nice range to warm up. Green fairways at the end of winter when others are still brown. Greens had recently been worked but should be great in a couple of weeks. We will go back every chance we get.
Only 9 holes.
The first nine holes were closed due to aeration work. The Pro didn't tell me this when I checked in. I was not offered any refund despite having paid for 18 holes
Always A Good Experience
Always a good experience at Birkdale. Pace of play was good. Good Hot Deal rate for 4 players was good.
Several Soggy Holes
As a member, I try to play once a week and I and I find myself skipping several holes due to the middle of the fairways being soggy. I'm not talking just wet grass, I mean you can feel your feet sink into the grass and if you take a divot it is straight up mud. The condition of this course is just not worth it and I would avoid playing or joining Birkdale.
Another point of concern is that even if the carts are allowed on the course and it is not cart path only, you will see where golfers have left marks and dug into wet areas on the course. With the current conditions they should keep it as cart path only to preserve their course.
I visited a few other golf courses across Chesterfield over the last month and none of them had the conditions I played through at Birkdale. Pay a little more to enjoy golf elsewhere.
Typical Winter Course Condition in VA
The course was in typical condition for early February in VA. Weather for the day was favorably warm, just a little windy.
Avoid Joining as a Member
This is my first year with Birkdale and will be my last. We joined Birkdale due to being so close, but I can tell you it is not worth the proximity, I will be leaving to join another club further away.
Birkdale will push out as many teams as possible in a day. If the weather is halfway decent expect to wait a long time. They do not monitor their tee times allowing teams to tee off late or early and it creates a bottleneck on the course. Unless you go out in the extreme cold or potential rain, their course is packed, and the pace is ridiculously slow.
The conditions of the course are "ok" at best. Last time I played, there were several holes with tire tracks from either carts or maintenance equipment in the middle of fairways or near the greens. Their course also retains water like a sponge, Several holes maintain a soggy soupy mess which makes it difficult to even walk out to your ball let alone driving the cart and this is when carts are allowed on the course and not cart path only.
The greens for most holes are a disaster, between players who refuse to fix their divots and general maintenance it is like playing plinko when you putt. The tee boxes are somewhat fine, they are probably 50/50 grass and dirt, but they are playable.
The practice range is ok and as a member I don't have much to say about the cost of balls as it is included. The staff are friendly but seem powerless to enforce rules or manage flow on the course. Don't even ask if anyone can come out to help resolve a problem you will just be told they are understaffed or can't do anything about it and to play on or around the issue.
If you are looking to just play a few holes here or there and learn to play it can be a decent option, but if you are serious about playing, look elsewhere. There are so many other options to either play or join other courses that I would highly recommend avoiding Birkdale.
Great shape - fast play
Course was in great shape for January. Greens firm with solid pace. Overall great round of golf.
Great time
First time playing here and won’t be the last the staff were friendly and appreciative. The course was in good shape and fun to play looking forward to playing it again
You get what you pay for
Course is in decent shape, but pace of play has always been an issue. Prices have gone up on everything. For the offering there are a few other courses that are a better bang for your buck.
Petty management
I booked the wrong location (same course name) and so the course charged my credit card a $220 cancellation fee. They just be hard up for money at the moment. Petty. I guess they’ve never made a mistake.
Course is in good condition, greens still a little sandy from being punched. Fairways and tee boxes are very nice right now
