Oyster Reef features elevated tees and lush fairways lined by thick stands of live oak and pine. Numerous doglegs accented by strategically located mounds and fairway bunkers, call for well-planned tee shots. Varying sizes of greens with well-defined tiers place a premium on precise approach shots.

The par-3 sixth hole, which plays 192 yards from the back tees to a green set against a backdrop of Port Royal Sound, is one of the most visually spectacular holes on Hilton Head. Oyster Reef is now a semi-private member-owned club with a limited number of tee times for guest play,

The carefully-maintained facility, designed by noted course architect Rees Jones, continues to be a favorite destination for serious golfers as well as a favorite with locals.

Basic HHI course

This is just a typical HHI course - well conditioned, variety of holes through tight tree lined fairways. Hard to get into much trouble because the pines are cleaned out underneath. Not as much water that is troublesome as some other area courses. Not special, but nothing bad. My personal experience wasn't as good as hoped, but only due to the fact that I was playing as a single. They were starting everyone on 10, and when it was my tee time, two other groups had been sent to the tee in front of me that had yet to tee off. The pro in the shop instructed me to go start on #2. That worked for all of 1 hole, then I caught up with an older couple who asked me to play through, then I got bogged down behind two foursomes, so it ended up being a long nine until I got to the back, which those in front of me had already played. I moved along briskly after that. One picturesque hole (#6), but otherwise pretty pedestrian course with homes on each side.of many holes.

Fun Day

Myself, wife and I enjoyed the course. Fairways were a bit thin but very playable. Bunkers were really nice. Lots of them...

Everyone from where you drop your bags off to the starter were great. Disappointed that the beverage cart never showed up.

Watch out when booking

We booked through Golfnow. When we got there, our reservation was changed from 18 holes to 9. They said it was because it was twilight golf but then we were charged $50 MORE than we were supposed to be charged. I am very angry and would not recommend this course for taking advantage of us in such a way!

Still early in season

The course was very nice. It was early in the season and the fairways were very uneven. Lots of tight lies and dormant grass so basically winter conditions. Greens were nice. Their posted rates were very expensive and not worth it but we got a good deal.

A bit overpriced

Course is only in fair shape. The greens are fine but the fairways need work. The pace of play was terrible. Got tired of waiting and walked off course after 11 holes. Two threesomes and our twosome stacked up on each hole and this was on a mid-afternoon start.

Hidden gem

I've now played 5 different courses in the HH area (only get here on vacation) and Oyster Reef is right there with the top ones. The layout is challenging but fair (fine for an intermediate golfer) and course conditions were surprisingly good for mid March. Not as many forced carries as other courses, and somehow I managed to stay out of the sand fairly well. All staff were friendly. Didn't eat at the restaurant but it had a great vibe. 6th hole looks out over the water; great photo op. I'll definitely come back.

Good course, recommended!

Had a great time here. Course was in good condition for mid-March, and had a great layout. A little more challenging than I expected, but fair. Plenty of water and doglegs. Requires some thought off tee as driver can be too long on 2 or 3 holes unless you can reliably shape it. Mostly friendly staff. Did not eat at restaurant but ambiance was great and lots of patrons. Pro shop not overpriced like many. I paid $125 and feel it was worth it. Take a pic on 6.

Mixed review

Challenging layout with lots of bunkering around the greens. Greens were excellent. Fairways and tees were average at best. Off the fairway was either pine straw, leaves, or very dry hardpan.

I didn't really enjoy the course. High price even for the island.
