A coworker and myself were in Orlando for several days for a work conference and decided to come down early to play Pine Barrens on a Sunday and Monday. Greens fees were $50 on Sunday (plus a $20 replay for a $70 total - absolute steal) and $40 on Monday morning.

Given that this is Florida's off season and the course had experienced heavy rain the day before, the course was in outstanding shape. Greens have recovered well from punching 2 or so weeks ago and were rolling well. Other than 17 fairway, the fairways were in excellent condition and the waste areas featured prominently around the course were well maintained.

In terms of design, this is definitely the most unique course I have ever had the pleasure to play. #4 and #15 here are truly exceptional holes that stand out against any course I've been on. On Pine Barrens you will not see the same hole twice, and at least 6 holes on the course give you that "this might be the best hole on the course" thought when looking off the tee box.

Fair warning for first timers, choose the tees commensurate to your skill level. I would rate this course as extremely challenging from the tips. It's extremely long and has very undulating greens, but if you like a challenge this course will give you everything you want.

Would highly recommend this course to all skill levels as 5 sets of tees cater to all players. The course is forgiving enough from the forward tees to accommodate a 25+ handicap while also challenging skilled players from the back tees. All in all, this in my opinion a must play course if you're in the area and I will be returning if I'm ever in the area again.

Tom Fazio might be the greatest course designer of all time. He is my personal favorite and I am on a quest to play each of his courses. Overall this course is stunningly beautiful and ranks as one of my favorites. Seamlessly blending into the surrounding pine forest, Fazio courses never look manufactured or 'plopped' down. Yet this little gem has a neglected air that worries me.

This course is a real anomaly. Not part of a resort or club, it was built in the middle of nowhere, with no lodging nearby and has no membership. it's a public course, open to all. it is very inexpensive, which may be part of the problem. Despite its peaceful beauty, close inspection reveals out of shape greens, tee boxes in very poor shape and fairways fairly beat up.

There is a very small 'cafe' to grab a quick bite and an adequate pro shop if you need to grab something, but no club house to speak of. Bring your own towel if you want a quick shower in the one shower room after your round. Very pretty practice areas abound.

The course has five tees, although the furthest back has tee boxes so out of shape as to be unusable. There are no combo cards made ready and so my husband (9 handicap) played his own combo black/green, depending on the look of the box. I play the orange, which were really too easy (114) and stuck so far foward as to make the landing areas awkward and hazards not really in play. (I hate when the most forward tees are an afterthought.) I should have played a white/orange combo and if the course were part of a club, I'm sure there would be combo carefully thought out to give proper stroke indexes & etc.

But as it is, the course seems a bit of a duffers paradise.

Very lax dress codes and lots of 'public' players shouting and cursing on the course. Music blasting from carts blazing around.

And still the holes are a treat. Only three par 5s and no too long, the course is effeminately playable even for the higher handicaps.

Hardly any water hazards, but guarded, tiered greens. Although the greens were not in top shape, having recently been aerated, you could see the nice variety in elevations, with enough contour to make things interesting.

Look out for the signature long waste areas running down the left side and the occasional middle of the fairway tree. The 14th has a double green and lucky you when play is to the easier left side green!

Not to missed for Fazio fans and perhaps midweek better than weekends to avoid some of the more 'public' public. But even on a busy sunday we played in four hours and the ranger was around often to keep things moving.

This is one of best courses ever played. Very challenging. Greens are quite difficult (but fair) to putt since you never seem to get a flat putt on any hole. Each hole seems to be quite different and enjoyable.

World Woods Pine Barrens is ranked in the Top 100 Public Courses in America. I was a little disappointed in the conditions of the course for holding such a high ranking. There were brown spots on several greens, and the fairways had quite a few dead spots. PB's sister course, Rolling Oaks, was in much better shape. The par 5's on this course are all great. There is also a par 4 with two greens (much better hole with the green on the right-hand side). I had extremely high expectations for a course ranked #68 and was a little let down by the conditions. The layout was nice, but not really picture worthy either. Lots of elevation changes and it is definitely a course you need to use proper course management skills to score well. If you are coming to World Woods make sure you also play Rolling Oaks. You might come away debating which course you like better.

I would recommend this course, but wouldn't plan around playing these courses. If they are relatively in the way then make the stop. If you are choosing a Top 100 place to play in the Orlando or Tampa area then Streamsong blows World Woods out of the water. If you are on a budget, World Woods is much friendlier on the wallet. Streamsong, in my opinion, is still a better value as it is in a completely different class. Better yet, play them all!

Very challenging layout with many holes to remember. You will think you are no longer in Florida. greens rolled really well and the fairways were in good shape. This is a great value for the money and makes you think when you are playing. Also, the service in the snack bar was great and the staff very friendly. My wife played and was able to enjoy herself from the front tees.

Played on a Friday afternoon with 2 others, pace of play excellent finished in 4 hours 10 minutes. From tee to green , excellent conditions . Fairways were exceptional , and if had not rained in months. Choose your tee box wisely, 7237 from the tips , 5891 from the men's white tees give golfers of all abilities a good test. Large undulating greens and numerous waste bunkers provide quite a challenge. Only complaint no ball washers on the entire course or the gold carts. bring an extra small towel .

Love when I get a chance to play World Woods Pine Barrens course. Got a great Hot Deal rate and got grouped with 2 young Philadelphia Phillie minor league pitchers. They hit from the black tees which is a little more than I should play at nearly age 60 but I sucked it up and played from them as well. I generally am not used to hitting some long irons into the par 4's but it was a fun day. The greens are always some the finest you'll ever putt on. Fairways are still in nice shape considering the extreme lack of rain in this area of Florida. Certainly worth the drive from anywhere and any distance; you won't ever be disappointed.

OK, we had just spent a week at a famous course in Palm Harbor. Conditions there were horrible, and hi dollar to boot! What a surprise this was following that! Fazio is my fav designer to start with. Greens like carpet, what you see you get, no surprises. Fairways also green and full. And the price, $40!!! In relative terms than, the resort we played and stayed should have paid ME to play any of their courses!

We played this fabulous course after playing the over priced courses at Innisbrook. What a different in course conditions. Pine Barrens's fairways are pristine and greens while the two over priced courses we played at Innisbrook were brown and spotty. Innisbrook should be ashamed of charging $200 to play their two top courses while we paid $40 for the afternoon rate at Pine Barrens.

Pine Barrens's layout is fantastic. Greens, however, are on the slow side and many bunkers were not raked. But the beauty of the layouts and fairway conditions made up for this small inferiority.

If you plan to play in Tampa area, skip Innisbrook and drive an hour North to play Pine Barrens. You will save hundreds of dollars and enjoy your golf experiences instead of wondering what happens to Innisbrook?

We read the wonderful reviews on both courses at World Woods and were excited to get there for 36 holes. We expected a large clubhouse and a resort seal but were surprised when we saw that the pro shop was very small and the lunch room was more of a grill. The staff was friendly and we went out for the early rounds on Barren Oaks. The greens were fast and true. Course conditions were great and this would be a favorite if I lived in the area. Make sure to pick the right set of tees because this course is tough. This is a definite must play.
