Nice, but too quirky
This course came highly recommended from some friends. It has all the nice trappings of a good course: excellent practice facility, beautiful clubhouse, friendly staff and nice carts. However, the course isn't a true championship track. Many of the holes are tight and great drives leave you with uneven lies and peculiar second shots. The strength of the course is its par 3's. A couple are outstanding. The longest of the par 5's is also nice. Overall, there are other great golf courses in the area that should be played first.
Incredible course design on an incredible hunk of the Sierra foothills.
Great high end venue. The course ranks among the best of the best !
A true country club experience.
The course was in pristine condition and the vistas were worth the price of admission. Some of the shots are blind which encouraged me to want to play the course again. It is a spectacular setting and the staff was friendly and helpful. I look forwardto a return play.
private course features for the public
I used my golf rewards to play at this expensive course and LOVED IT. The veiws are breathtaking. Its very long and about 80 stories of elevation change.
Stunning!
This course was in great shape, and very playable. The rough was thick, but fairways lush and in great shape. The greens rolled true. We were able to get out an hour early and even tho we were behind a tournament the pace of play was great.
couple realy nice holes
fairways great condition, greens slow could have been faster. beautiful course
Beautiful Course
This is a beautiful course. It used to be a private country club but opens tee times to the public now.
Best around
Winchester is the best course in the area, and for $55 it's a steal.
It's not a grip-it and rip-it course. You must strategize your tee shots, balancing risk and reward.
The greens are fast and true.
The pace of play is usually great. Mid-week you can play in under 4 hours.
All of the little things are done well. It feels like a country club (it is!) for a muni price.
Best course within an hours drive from Sacramento
The course was in great shape for early March. Very scenic with
views of the Sacramento Valley including downtown Sacramento.
Each hole is unique and nestled in hillside settings with sloped greens that are challenging. We really appreciated the service at the 19th hole. We got in late, but they were willing to stay open and the attendant was very hospitable. Drinking a beverage and looking out over the valley at sunset was very nice. No other course in the area has what this course offers.
What a Sierra Foothill Gem!
This is hands down the best course available to the public in the Sacramento area, no contest no way. If you can get a hot deal for under $80 you will not be disappointed. The fairways are in excellent shape with many open to use of the driver if you have good accuracy with it. The greens were challenging but large. Overall, the course was maintained excellently with views of Mt. Diablo from the clubhouse. The best part about this course is that no one is out there playing! We had a tee time at 11:20 and got through the round at a leisurely pace by 3:30pm plenty of time to take advantage of the beautiful clubhouse bar.
Large undulating greens are a challange to putt.
We had a nice day at Winchester. Be aware however, the brakes on the golf carts are iffy and there are a number of steep downgrades between holes. We had one minor rear ender when the cart would not stop on the cart path down to #10 tee.
Beautiful course, the views from the clubhouse are worth the drive.
This is a great golf course. I like that the course plays in front of you. There is very little circus golf here. With the exception of 10, every hole is a fair test. I would have easily given this course 5 stars, but no course should play 5 hours on a Monday afternoon.
challenging course & greens
great course but slow play ahead of us
no marshal on this day
NICE COURSE, PRIVATE FEES TOO MUCH. SHOULD BE 50 OR LESS.
INTERESTING 70%OF HOLES, REMAINDER SEEMED TOO EASY FOR A 12 HCDP.. ALL IN ALL FUN AND THE YOUNG MAN AND HIS SON WERE A PLEASURE. ALSO MARSHALL HELPED UP PLAY THROUGH A FOURSOME THAT WOULD ULTIMATELY SHOOT A 6 HR ROUND, APPARENTLY GETTING THEIR MONEY'S WORTH.
This is an incredible course, the views speak for themselves.
Very beautiful, very challenging, incredibly well taken care of, what a course.
Fantastic course
This is an excellent golf course, great variety of holes, plenty of elevation changes, generous fairways, large undulating greens, teriffic scenery, great practice facilities & attentive staff.
A true beauty.
Played this course for the first time as a single. It was everything I'd hoped it would be. Laid out within the natural terrain/settings. Very challenging from the tips, but very fair and not gimmicky. The course was in pristine condition. It had rained the previous 2 days and night before (late January), but the fairways were firm and the greens fast. Every hole is laid out beautifully and requires strategy. The 18th (and the view from the tee) was a perfect finish to a special round. The staff was friendly, helpful, and professional. It's a private club that presently allows public play on certain afternoons. I had a 12:30 t-time and they let me go off early as a single. A sub-4hr round on a course like this, taking the time to truly soak in its splendor, is very hard to beat. Would play it again in a heartbeat.
Great Course, but it will humble you.
Overall the course was in great shape. I did find the greens a little slow side BUT it had rained the night before and was cloudy so they never had a chance to dry out. I played as a single and was through in 3 hours.
This is a very well maintained and challenging course!
This course meanders through the hills providing plenty of nice views. It is well maintained and the staff are very courteous.
Quiet, well staffed, beautiful!
We really enjoyed ourselves. It helped that we played later in the day, and barely saw anybody all day long. The staff were helpful, put water in our cooler for us, and made sure we had what we needed and where to go. The driving range was well-stocked.
You believe that 30% of the holes were too easy? This course is one of the toughest in the area. Maybe you were playing the front tees. Also, I don't know how you can expect the fees to be $50 or less- Average courses cost $50. Winchester is a beauty, one of the nicest in the Sacramento region, and they pamper you as well. It's pricey but they always offer deals online for around $75, which is a fantastic price for this course.
