Echelon Photo submitted by u000002499191 on 11/05/2012
Elevation change makes Echelon a true test of golf!
This is by far one of my favorite courses in the Atlanta area. Echelon was built in the early-2000's as a private course and suffered tremendously when the market crashed around 2008. They opened it to the public but never even had a clubhouse built by the time the developers had to sell the property in 2013. Since then, the course has begun to thrive and the conditions get better each year. The new owner, in fact, just opened up the newly built clubhouse during Masters week of this year.
On to the course review....The course is set on quite a mountainous piece of property which makes the views spectacular but can also lead to some frightening scores. There are rolling hills throughout the course, so a lot of the course knowledge is just knowing which hill will kick balls back into the fairway. The tee boxes here are so flat and well-manicured and the greens are always in good condition. There is a tee box for every skill level as it maxes out around 7600 yards but I promise with the elevation changes, you'll want to move up a tee. If you're a local or an out-of-town visitor, Echelon needs to be at the top of your must-play list. You won't regret it!
Beautiful
Course is well maintained and challenging and beautiful.
Challenging course in good condition
Echelon is a challenging course and is in good condition. The practice range is excellent and the course itself is fine. The only issues are: 1) The sand traps and bunkers had not been raked for a while. If your course features a lot of sand, you need to make sure the traps/bunkers are in good playable condition. 2) The yardage markers were hard to find. Need to be easier to locate to maintain the pace of play.
I like the course and will play it again, but when paying $75 - $85 a round on a weekday you expect a bit more.
great course
15 or better handicap only... several carries over 200 yards... incredible natural surroundings, huge property. GREAT GOLF COURSE !
Great course, will be beautiful when it greens up!
I looked at a ton of different courses in the Atlanta area as I was driving back from Augusta, and I saw Echelon on most of the "10 Best Courses in Atlanta" and I was staying north of town a bit in Duluth, so it worked! Even though I was teeing off in twilight around 4:10pm, and I arrived around 3:30pm, there were still staff out front working the carts and helping with golf bags, so this was very nice to see and a great first impression! Checking in was smooth and painless and the gentleman behind the counter was full of great guidance and directions around the course, which was very nice to see! The course does have a HUGE practice range, but all of the targets are well below grade, and there are no signs for distance or anything like that as the teeing areas surround the range, so it might be tough to manage anyways, but it was a strange but huge practice area! The course was starting to green up, but there was still a significant amount of brown / dormant grass - but I imagine the course will be amazingly beautiful when it greens up! As many people mentioned in their reviews, it is hilly - VERY HILLY - so you cannot walk this course. The course has 5 different tee boxes so there is something for everyone here - but it's a challenge no matter what. The only thing that I would love to see is REAL bathrooms on the course of this caliber. Porta-potties behind some lattice fences is not enough for this type of course! I would love to see this improvement, but I definitely would recommend the course at $75, and probably up to maybe $125!
Lots of Elevation
Lots of Elevation changes and blind tee shots make Echelon a tough but fun track. Pro shop and restaurant staff were super friendly and food was good. Great value for the money.
interesting golf course
It was an interesting course with elevation differences that I experienced for the first time since coming to Georgia.
It rained a few days ago, so the course conditions weren't great, but I think it's a golf course worth revisiting.
Love Echelon
Beautiful course, friendly staff, excellent pace of play
Never had so many shots roll backwards
Early season golf is not indicative
We had a lot of rain last week and it was cart path only which is always a slog but necessary.
Solid layout and a lot of elevation changes on the back nine.. Playing uphill holes is never fun
Best holes are 8 - brutal 11th and 13th..
Course has many extreme edges as its defense
An example on uphill 14th.. drive rolled back 40 yards after landing on fairway and blind 3rd rolled back 30 yards off false front of the green twice.. so had 100 yards of backward yardage on one hole
Landed on right edge of 18th green and not only spun off the green but down the hill 30 yards into the hazard.
Guess when the rough grows will not happen but still says do not be short now
Nice practice range but first timers behind us as well thought it was too hard.. Many forced carries for the ladies
Great Course with fabulous layout! Greens were very good. This is a Tough but fair course with the different elevations. Long course with favorable open fairways. Will be playing again soon!
Beautiful course and layout with amazing views
Visiting family from out of state, and this is the best course I’ve played in Georgia so far. Beautiful track with amazing views provided by the drastic elevation changes. Perfect routing that includes a great variety of holes. Course conditions were good considering the amount of rain they had leading up to the day I played. Greens were pure but not very fast because they probably didn’t get a chance to cut them with all the rain. I hope I’m able to come back and play here again during prime season.
