Baytowne at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort
About
Baytowne Golf Club at Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort is routed from the beach to the bay, providing stunning views along the way. The course rolls across the few elevation changes that the area has to offer. Although it opened in 1984, the golf course didn't reach its peak until it underwent extensive renovation in 2005, which were carried out by the original designer, Tom Jackson. The layout features rolling fairways lined with mature pines that are generous and times but can be tight when you least expect it. The large, undulating greens can also play faster than what you might be expecting. Water, which comes into play on 12 holes, is a prominent feature of Baytowne Golf Club as are the numerous bunkers strategically placed throughout.

Disappointed
First let me say I have been playing the Sandestin Courses for years. I almost always play twice when we come down for our family vacation. The Raven is one of my personal favorite courses.
But after today I will not be spending my money with them anymore. There are two reasons for that.
First the course was not in very good condition. The greens were slow and soft and the fairways, especially on the back, were spotty at best. Not what I expect from a resort course with resort pricing.
Second I booked the earliest time I could so I could make it back to the family for beach time, which was 7:15. When arriving I was told I was with another single. When he no showed I went off by myself.
Here is the rub. I was cruising along without interruption until I got to 15. That's where the decided to shotgun some groups for the next three holes!
After waiting 20 minutes for the first group to tee off I gave up and quit. It would have taken at least an hour and a half to finish.
I went to voice my complaints to the starter. Got even more irritated when first there was no apology and second it was pointed out that I played really fast and that's the reason I caught up to them! Who gives that explanation at a nice resort course?!
And of course not a ranger in site the whole round. I was informed he had just arrived.
This is long winded review to say that there are better options in Destin area for same or less money. My run of playing Sandestin courses is sadly over after the way I was treated today.
Fun layout, poor conditions
The course layout is absolutely perfect. There are absolutely fun and challenging holes from the back tees. The ball sat up nicely in the fairways.
Very disappointed in the greens and tee boxes. The value($) does not justify it from tee to green. I’m not sure I’ve played slower greens than Baytowne. It was almost unbearable because the greens wouldn’t play pure. The tee boxes need some serious attention too. I was having to tee the ball 2-3ft behind every marker to find a flat spot or a spot with firm/lush grass.
I wouldn’t play this course again based on the green speed and tee boxes because every hole was so uncomfortable.
Needs improvement
Greens were slow, but much improved from last fall. Tee boxes were in very rough condition. Fairways and bunkers were marginal. I own a home on the 14th hole. So I know it Gets a lot of play, but for the amount of revenue this course generates it should be better maintained
In bad shape
I was surprised at the price to play since we were informed after our round that the greens caught a disease last year and they had let them grow out. putting was horrible as the greens were beaten up bad. no true roll.
Greens
Previous reviews mentioned slowness of the greens and they were not wrong. Way too slow
Played 18 holes in 3 1/2 hours, !!
Nice layout, fairways are good, greens are challenging but no beverage cart all day 😢
Fine course, Yet Expensive
The experience overall was okay, however it was extremely expensive for the quality. BEWARE these are the slowest greens I think I’ve ever seen!
Slow play
Course layout was fine, greens very slow. No ranger to keep pace of play. Waited on every hole. 5plus hour round.
Slow greens
Customer service could have been a whole lot better at the beginning between the greeters and behind the counter. Starter was great, fairways were great, rough wasn't crazy, greens were probably the slowest greens I have ever played. But great weather.
Greens too slow
Overall, this was a very pleasant round of golf. We got caught behind a very slow group but were able to pass them at the turn as they stopped for food and drinks. As noted by other reviewers, the greens were too slow for a quality course like this one.
Greens were literally unplayable
I play a lot of golf, I come from a small town with greens that everyone says are slow. But I've never experienced greens like the ones we played at Baytowne. The course was in beautiful shape, could have been a great day, but the greens were unplayable. They were worse than shag carpet, you couldn't hit a putt hard enough no matter what you did. Finally had to start taking a 2 putt rule, would have loved to give a good review, but if greens are similar I will not play here again.
Good play, Good time
I was new to Sandestin golf, and all staffs are very kind to guide me. It was rainy day, but I could fininsh almost 16 holes. One thing I would like to mention is the course layout is a bit confused (cross the road, and here and there etc). So, new players like me should be careful to keep on tract. Nice price, nice cousre, nice people!!! I want to play Raven and Links course next visit.
Mr. Binkley
Thank you for sharing your recent experience at Baytowne Golf Club at Sandestin. We always appreciate feedback.
My apologies we did not live up to your expectations.
In your particular case we clearly misjudged pace of play to start the day. The Shotgun you reference went out at 9:15am. Since you arrived at the 15th hole about the same time they started, it means you were on a pace to finish in 2 hours and 20 minutes. Honestly, we accounted for 3 hours for these lead groups starting the day. Again, my apologies on this error.
As for the course itself, I respectively disagree with your assessment and feel the course is in great condition. In fact our Golf Advisor scores reflect this with a rating of 4.2 out of 5 Stars. Additionally, our percent to recommend is 93% for the past 12 months and an excellent 96.1% for the past 6 months. I follow these scores closely and hold staff accountable for results. Currently I am very pleased.
I hope you will reconsider your statement to never play Sandestin again and we welcome you back at any time.
Thanks and have a great day!
