Incredibly beautiful setting for a classic Jim Engh course.

Due to a tremendous rainstorm when I tried to play July, 2014 we were only able to play the front nine. When I saw Redlands had dropped their weekday price to $50- I worried that conditions would be bad this year. Fortunately that was not the case. Conditions were great as usual. The pricing change was done to encourage more play on this wonderful track. Good move!

Redlands Mesa is another classic Jim Engh designed track including 11 elevated bunkers. The Golf Club at Redlands Mesa appears to be a lush dark green carpet flowing through rugged red rock formations with a backdrop of the beautiful Colorado National Monument. Who could ask for anything more for super photo ops?

Grand Junction has a high desert climate and therefore a longer and dryer season than the courses up in Summit and Eagle Counties.

Your golf experience at Redlands Mesa will long be remembered for the incredible views from each tee box. The first few holes have the rugged backdrop of Colorado National Monument (which is definitely worth a side trip for a winding road drive comparable to the Grand Canyon in beauty and history). If you're really brave and strong do this on a bike.

Back to the golf review...... Hole #3 is an almost blind par 3 with a huge green divided by a ridge in the middle. Get on the correct side of the ridge and you're rewarded. On the wrong side you'll get the usual Jim Engh punishment.

Hole #5 is a dog-leg right par 5 with the Jim Engh signature clown's tongue green. When I played it with my brother we both narrowly missed the elevated green to the right on our third shots. When we got to the green we found my ball 2" from the hole for a tap in birdie and my brother's ball was in the hole for an eagle 3!

Another classic hole is the #17 par 3. It's a long downhill shot from a very elevated tee to a narrow green in a rugged rock cove. When I played this hole in 2007 a bobcat chased a rabbit across the green as we were about to hit our tee shots. This year the rabbit population was way up and no bobcats visible. Nature's way, I guess.

Redlands Mesa ranks very high on the fun and beauty scales. It's a great course to play at least twice due to some pretty tricky layouts. (The 14th hole has a dogleg right of more than 90 degrees if you bust a big drive down the middle between two large rock mounds. Shorter hitters have a partially blind shot over the right rock mound.

Bring your camera and your shot making imagination when you come to play Redlands Mesa.

Beautiful Track. Staff Needs Attitude Adjustments.

First played this course almost 20 years ago. Came back to celebrate another birthday and, while the course layout and conditions did not disappoint it just seemed that the staff members were not happy to be there. From the moment we asked if we were up next on the tee to when we went inside at the turn to get a drink, the staff just didn't seem happy. Job satisfaction in a recreational environment is critical to the overall experience. I'm afraid the employees we encountered just didn't leave the impression that they were glad that we were there - or that they were.

Pros:
Course layout, views and condition.
Couple we were paired up with. Calvin and Susan were just fun to be with for the day.
Ease of finding your way around the course.
The combo tees is something every course should offer.

Cons:
Staff members seem unhappy. Wasn't just my impression. My partner and Calvin/Susan said the same thing.
Pace of play was a little slow. And it wasn't helped when they allowed a fivesome in front of us to continue. The Marshal even said he "had told them to speed up" but they were a hole behind the group in front of them. But they were members so....(Could tell because they had their own carts)
Cost.

Summary:
I'd visit this course again. But frankly only an hour away there is another course, Devil's Thumb, that is half the price, filled with friendly staff members and is just about as beautiful. Plus it is FAR more quiet!
I'd recommend this course for the views and condition. But just go into things knowing it's going to cost you unless you are a local, there may be members playing as fivesomes or whatever they feel, the staff may not make you feel like you are appreciated and the pace is going to be a slow one.

Windy weather

Caught Redlands Mesa on a day that featured 20-25 mph winds, with gusts of 30 - a tough ask in the high desert.

The course features an abundance of elevated tee boxes, leaving shots exposed to that wind. It made for an exhilarating challenge, particularly on the par 3s.

RM takes advantage of its’ ideal setting amongst the backdrop of the Colorado National Monument. You will be in awe of the breathtaking vistas. The outward nine, in my opinion, is more difficult and slightly hindered by an abundance of houses that are plainly in view. The inward nine, however, is largely void of residences and is the much more visually stunning routing.

First-time visitors, even armed with a free course guide, will be a little lost or dismayed at times about where the correct play is. That’s ok. Rub of the green is decidedly in play here and it will tend to even out. There are many risk/reward options along the way, particularly on the par 5s, which are reachable in two for better players. And if you are not from a region that lies well above sea level, prepare for a one-club difference.

Fairways were a little splotchy in parts. It could be the drought I was told they are experiencing so far this year. Bunkers were good. Sand is coarse and fine. Greens were a touch on the slow side, but rolled good. I’m not sure on a day like today that the staff could get them any faster without playability concerns. My ball continuously oscillated on the green throughout the round.

RM is a course chock full of character and I wouldn’t doubt if players either love it or hate it. Some holes feature interesting quirks that if embraced enriches the experience.

Slow play

5 1/2 hours on a weekday is just too slow. Having to wait on every tee boc you can’t maintain any momentum

Beautiful but VERY challenging

Played Redlands Mesa for the 1st time. Virtually every hold is more beautiful than the last one but this is not a course for beginners! Multiple sand traps along with unforgiving greens with many ups and downs of the terrain make this a very challenging course. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be back!

Great Track - Stop the Ads!!!

What a fun course to play! (except for the non-stop annoyance of the GPS system in the carts) The track is spectacular! There are quite a few homes on the course but they are set back far enough that they shouldn't be in play. The greens are the only defense the course has. At nearly 5,000 feet elevation the ball goes forever so none of the holes felt long to me. Many of the greens have 3 or 4 sections with dramatic slopes separating them so if you miss on your approach, a three putt quickly comes into play. There is one par five on the front and three on the back. All but one are easily reachable and allow for some birdies! I thought the green on the one front nine par five was silly. The drop between the upper and lower tier is easily 6-8 feet which is more suited to a putt putt course. The course really needs a marshal. The back nine was easily a 2.5+ hour pace.
My only serious complaint is the incessant ads coming from the GPS system. It was nonstop!! At least one ad per hole - often two - that were difficult to skip. Just charge me an extra $10!! The last thing I need on a perfect day for golf is 10+ ads from the local real estate agents. Enough already!!!!

Beautiful Views, incredibly slow,no help

Busy Saturday.with no ranger (terrible drunken golfers playing from blue tees), no beverage cart (80+f) = a long dry six hour, yes 6HR, round. Nice resort course needs “help”

Western Colorado Gem

It's not my everyday course, but it is in the same town. Always well maintained with beautiful backdrop against the Colorado National Monument. Course design has a few circussy holes, but I always enjoy it. Was a Golfnow Hot Deal with a coupon ($45), rack rate is $79.

Took 5+ hours to play

We waited on every single shot on every hole on the course! It is extremely beautiful but the pace of play was god awful!! It was a very long day and doesn’t need to be that way!
