Colonial Country Club
About
Colonial Country Club, located in Fort Worth on the southern banks of the Trinity River and near TCU, is one of the most historic golf clubs in Texas. The club was founded in 1936 by Marvin Leonard, who sought to have a north Texas club with smooth, bent grass greens (unheard of at the time, as many courses had either sand or Bermuda turf). The course was originally designed by Texan John Bredemus and Oklahoma architect Perry Maxwell, who formally worked with Dr. Alister Mackenzie. Holes no. 3-5 are nicknamed the “Horrible Horseshoe” and represent the strongest stretch on the course, featuring a 247-yard par-3 4th hole bookended by long and demanding par 4s. Colonial Country Club hosted the 1941 U.S. Open, won by Craig Wood and was the first time the event was staged in Texas. Despite now playing over 7,200 yards, Colonial maintains a reputation to this day as a ball-striker’s playground. Ben Hogan won the Colonial golf tournament five times. Other multiple winners of this longstanding PGA Tour event include Lee Trevino, Billy Casper, Nick Price and Ben Crenshaw.

Golf Advisor: Top Courses in Florida (2014 #11)
Reviews
Colonial September 20l15
Course was in excellent condition, played in 3 hours 15 minutes. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful.
Excellent Golf Course
The golf course was in great shape, the staff was very friendly and helpful being my first time there. I can't wait to play it again!
First Class Course and Service
We were greeted at the bag drop and told that our clubs and cart would be waiting for us at the driving range, which they were. Each station at the range (which was included at no extra charge) had a pyramid of practice balls, and even had an alignment rod. There were flags at 3 different distances at which to aim if desired. On the course, the tee boxes, even the forward ones, were immaculate--nicer than the greens at some courses in the area! The fairways, bunkers and greens were also in perfect condition. The carts even had our names on the front and towels for each player. The staff we met were all very friendly and accommodating. This is a beautiful and fun course to play, and the customer service was exemplary. The Colonial Country Club is a first class operation in all respects. I highly recommend it.
Great Value
beautiful course. Requires many strategic shots. Hit off matts on range but still great practice area.
Great course
I love Colonial. One of my favorite courses to play. The conditions of the course are always superb.
Southwest FL underwater...but NOT Colonial!
SUPER KUDOS to the staff and MGMT @ this course! They could have told us "no way", but were never anything less that totally accomodating!
My 2 playing partners and I were the ONLY rounds played on the course this day...
Drove over from FTL for a tee booked with "another" course.....they closed while we were on the Alley! After a quick call to GolfNow for a refund, we were re-booked with Colonial about 30 min away. FYI....this was the WETTEST weekend yet in SFLA this summer and EVERYONE was shut down from Naples to Tampa...but NOT Colonial.
Don't hesitate to play this course if you have the chance. Have NEVER seen a course drain water like this track!
First class course
Very well maintained course and staff is very friendly. A great layout, interesting golf holes. Everything about this course is classy.
Solid Round
Despite the greens being freshly punched the course was in great shape. The course rewards you for good shot. There were a few gimmick hole where you needed 5 iron off the tee but i will know how to play these next time. The round was played in under 3.5 hours and i look forward to the next chance i get to play here. The only bad mark of the day is that we were referred to as the guys who booked on golfnow. This in no way effected play but we felt looked down upon as not being members and were called this several time through out the day.
Good experience one of the best course around
Nice experience friendly staff close to my home so I do not have to drive far
After airification
Didn't know that they just punched the greens. Besides that always a very good course. Nice layout. Challenge from any tee.
A good day on the golf course
I had a great round and pair up with someone else the day was nice although the greens were being work on the course play well. I will play it again with a friend.
Poor conditions
first was not allowed to p-lay with brand new nice shorts that had pockets on the outside. Had to buy new shorts. if i didnt prepay would have left.
second the course was in terrible condition. Brown fairways & greens that were impossible to putt. Totally covered in sand.
Nice course
Challenging course, brutally long from back tees, in great condition. Firm greens that rolled perfectly. Was able to play 18 in just over three hours. Not many people on the course.
Great course
The course was beautiful and the staff was very friendly. It is worth the price.
A quality course
The course offers a tee for every golfer. It was a 4 hr round that was very enjoyable. Greens and fairways were in great condition. I will definitely play here again.
Beautiful track
First time play and was very pleased with the course. In excellent shape, greens a little slow but true. Beautiful landscapes.
Good course
The Golf is in a good shape and looks nice. The driving range is nice. Its a shame they have no GPS in the car.
A "HOT" day on the course.
I was almost the only one out there. So pace of play was good. Fairways were in great shape and greens were also putting true. I only get to play this course about once a year. It is so expensive when the snowbirds are here that it is not worth playing. When the price gets reasonable in the summer, it is usually to hot to play.
Very Nice
This is a very nice course. We played Magnolia, Pelican Preserve, Herons Glen plus others on this visit and Colonial was the best in our opinion. There are a few holes that local knowledge would have helped. Had a couple of shots that we thought were good but turned out we had driven thru a fairway or water came into play that we could not see. We just had a range finder and some of the hazards were hidden so we had a couple of surprises- not good surprises.
A must play course
This course was tough, fair, and beautifully conditioned from tee to green. Greens were smooth and fast for putting but didn't hold except for high approach shots. It took me awhile to get used to hitting off the Bermuta grass on the fairways and rough, as being from Ohio, The turf grass divots are very different...my problem, not the courses problem. This is now one of my all time favorite courses I have ever played, and I look forward to playing it again when I am in the Fort Myers area.
