Colonial Heritage Club
About
Colonial Heritage Golf Club offers the only Arthur Hills-designed layout in Williamsburg, and it is also the city's only gated golf community. Golfers looking for a place where they can just 'grip it and rip it' will be out of luck on this course, which requires skill and strategy. It is a thought-provoking design where golfers will want to weigh all of the risk and reward options first. The layout plays through deep ravines that provide interesting changes in elevation. The golf course also features undulating fairways and large, fast greens that are bordered by strategically placed bunkers as well as water hazards that come into play on several holes. Colonial Heritage G.C. definitely provides a good challenge, even for a seasoned player, but beginners shouldn't feel too intimidated. The golf course offers some room for error and the risk-reward opportunities appeal to low and high handicappers alike.

It's not easy to get on the green on the par-3 14th but if you do, you've got a great birdie opportunity. Photo submitted by Back9Ben on 03/11/2020

Reputation Well-Deserved
I played Colonial Heritage GC for the first time today, and found it to be one of the best golfing experiences I’ve ever had.
It started with a very reasonably-priced booking on GolfNow. When I arrived, the man in the pro shop was genuinely excited to hear it was my first time and gave me a warm welcome. After informing me that the starter had left for the day, he walked me out and gave me a thorough overview of the course. It was a little gesture that went a long way.
The course itself was in as immaculate condition as my “starter” claimed. Though the greens were a bit sandy from aerification, they nevertheless rolled smoothly and still pretty quickly. Tee boxes, fairway, rough, fringe, bunkers, cart path, and even practice facilities were in top-notch shape. With nice electric carts, smooth concrete cart paths, and thick flagsticks, this course really exudes quality.
As for the layout itself, it certainly has a more dynamic character than most courses in the area, making the most of what little elevation change the Peninsula offers. There are some holes with houses in view and some out in the woods. A few holes have a lot of distance between them with some classy wooden bridges that give the course even more upscale feel. There are more than a few forced carries in front of greens and fairways, so keep your eyes on the target!
The biggest challenge for me was the extra-fine, fluffy beach sand in the bunkers which looks great but increases the likelihood of plugged balls and in general gives most players an unfamiliar consistency to swing through.
Sometimes when you get a great rate for your round, the flipside is a crowded course and slow play but I had the course to myself nearly the whole way. In all aspects, this is an impressive course and well worth the drive. If you’re in town to play a few rounds, make sure this one is on your list.
Round at Feb 16
Had a great day playing this course. Front 9 is nice, but the round really gets interesting at the turn as the back 9 demands some good shot making and resulted in some big scores for me. Really nice layout and the greens were incredibly true for this time of year.
Great value
I am a bogey golfer and my brother is a 10 handicap. We read the reviews and brought lots of golf balls!
Our first impression was that this club would go private since it is private level in every respect.
The course is very unique in design and challenging. If you do not hit the ball straight this is not a course to play.
We thought it was a hidden gem and will play again. Very friendly staff.
Rainy Day - still fun
Booked a couple of days in advance, taking a chance on the weather. It rained, so a little cold and wet. But a lot of fun and only a handful of brave souls roughing it out.
The course design is amazing. Definitely difficult, but not as tough as some posters here make it out to be. I’m a high handicapper and played the blue tees. Lost 3 balls on hole 5, but 2 were shanks by me.Staff was very friendly. Greens were fast. Fairways gorgeous.
I’ll definitely be back.
A fall late afternoon
An interesting setup, with lots of forced carries, split fairways, chilliness, etc. The greens were coming off being punched, but still plenty fast and true rolling
The pace of play is good, be because with this challenging layout, all the members have to be able to play, and mostly members out there.
Excellent Course!
Colonial Heritage has one of the most fun layouts I've ever played, and it is extremely well manicured. It is a great value, and better than many courses priced two or three times higher. And, despite what many reviewers have said, it is not difficult. There are five or six sets of tees to play, and there are drop zones on literally every hole, that if used correctly, should make this course extremely playable for everyone. This was my first time playing Colonial Heritage but won't be my last!
Heritage in the mist
Played Colonial heritage in a constant drizzle, mist. Read reviews before that rated it a hard course. They were right. But, boy, was it fun! Found the multiple blind shots challenging and several holes designed as difficult. The closing par 5 is a gem, even though a bit intimidating. Greens and fairways were in fine shape with only a couple of bald patches on a couple of greens. The whole course is beautiful to play, and I recommend it fo anyone.
Very hard course
This is a very well kept course, but it is extremely difficult. Lots of blind shots and very small landing areas. Lots of trouble for being offline at all. Best suited for very good golfers.
May be the most difficult course on the peninsula.
I played this course as a guest. Did not know what to expect. The staff and facilities are very good, the course is near pristine. We played on a day of cart path only. This course is not easy and cart path only made it tougher. Plan to climb to the greens on many holes. The amount of elevation changes is extreme. Several tees are to blind layups. Ravines are unforgiving. Any thing other than in the fairway is very challenging. Course is not designed for walking, though I don't believe it is an option. If you have any endurance challenges or disabilities be prepared.
Very Solid Track, Challenging! Put it on your list!
Awesome course, awesome layout. Really great layout.
Conditions I would say are slightly above average - everywhere I’ve gone this year with Bermuda grass seems to be having a tough time during this transition from spring to the summer months - no exception here.
Greens are solid.
It’s a place you’ll want to play a few times before you feel as though you have a handle on it. I’ll certainly be back for a second visit just to see what I can do with a little more knowledge of the course.
Only complaint - for the price of a round, range balls should be included. Already paying $85+ for a round of golf, no one wants to pay that much and then be nickel and dimed over a small bucket of balls. I get it though, the range doesn’t take care of itself.
