A special place
Mayacama has a fearsome reputation as both a tough course and perhaps the toughest walk in golf. Both are a bit overblown.
I came into the round almost expecting to lose a bunch of balls and curse the Jack Nicklaus design, but I was way off base. The course is challenging, yet not overwhelming. I played the member tees, set slightly short at 6,300 yards, and found the day to be a thrill ride of tough shots and tricky decisions.
My fitbit said I walked 7.3 miles, and by the end of the round, I was shakier off the tee. I think that's Mayacama's secret defense. The ravine carries, deep bunkers and the water on No. 18 become more ominous as your body tires.
Thank goodness for the rejuvenating glasses of wine and entrees served on the patio. If you're lucky enough to stay in one of the exquisite villas like I did, life will feel just about perfect, no matter what you shot.
A private club that feels like a mega resort (Thats a good thing!)
Mayacama is beautiful, from the momemnt you see the club house you know you're in for a magical day. The course is challenging yet fair, and was in perfect condition. Beautiful views, crazy elevation changes. A typical of a Nicklaus design. I loved it. The amenities are second to none. The giant locker room, the food, the wine, and the ridiculously awesome members. I would join this place in a heartbeat!
