Two groups were behind a foursome where a 30 handicapper was teaching 2 girls how to play. Never saw a marshal and finally had to skip 2 holes just to get in front of them!!

Leave your driver at home

Heron Lakes is a nice course and a great value. Overall, it's in good shape, especially since their recent work on the greens and tee boxes. There's a small practice putting green, but no driving range. Water on many holes, but no sand traps. Little tolerance for wayward tee shots, with narrow fairways and dense underbrush that will swallow up your ball in a heartbeat. Don't let the par 68 fool you - it's a challenging course that will test your came.

Great Value, short course

Heron Lakes is a great ego boost. The course wanders through a residential neighborhood and a number holes are really too short for a driver. Management has done a lot of work the last couple of years to put the course in pretty good condition. Rate of play is usually very good. There are no sand bunkers, however there are water hazards on most holes (Heron LAKES)

Pleasantly surprised

I have vowed many times never to play Heron Lakes again. But this time it was different. The grass on the tees, fairways and greens was good being the month of July with no recent moisture. The greens had not been cut for a while, so they played very slow. Leave the driver in the car and bring a few spare balls. For less than $20 on a weekend, it is hard to beat if just getting some strokes and practice in.

Not good. Thumbs down!

Course is way too short and the conditions are terrible. Fairways are muddy, neglected and the greens are worse! Isn't worth the 15$ I paid to golfnow. Their par 5's are about 375 yards which is laughable! The course is tight which is great but the conditions made it miserable. For 20-25$ you can play at bear creek or longwood and its 100x better! Won't be coming back to that place for a very long time.

They put love into the course

One of the things that's really frustrating is there are a lot of courses that do not maintain your courses. I understand most of the time it's a money issue. So I don't know if this course is doing well financially, took out a loan, new owners, whatever it may be, they are putting money into this course. The fairways were not overgrown, the greens in the French were the right size cut, and the greens were either in very good condition or were sanded over with sod to help it's growth. The only downside was some of the greens were so Sandy but they were overwhelmingly slow. But rather have Sadie greens where it's being maintained, then to allow what happens at a lot of courses in Houston, which is rot or dead grass and the green becomes a mud and gravel pit.

They spend the time to aerate the course and smooth it out afterwards. The course was relatively challenging. I can't tell you how many times I would walk up to a Teebox on a par three and I would look at my buddy and say, "I have no clue what to do." Often times that was because I had no iron in my bag to swing for it. An example is one of the par threes was roughly 135 yards. Couldn't pull my pitching wedge, because I normally get 150 to 165 yards of my pitching wedge. My gap wedge I usually hit right at 115 yards. Both my eight iron and nine iron are the devils clubs because for the life of me I simply can't hit them. So I ended up having to try a three-quarter swing with my pitching wedge. I overshot a little, but the fact that I had to sit and think what to do made it that much more enjoyable.

Thank you so much for the comments and review. We do put a lot of love in the course and it's amazing what a few hours a day on the mower and caring for the greens will do for a course.

We're also glad to hear the course presented a challenge for you in both club selection and strength of shot.

We hope you'll come out and play again soon!

Fun, but greens were rough

The course was fun and had a fast pace, very enjoyable, but the greens weren't in the best shape. It could've been from the down pour of rain, but they were entirely too tall and terrible to putt on. No cart girl, and not much of a food/drink selection.

Heron lakes

Heron lakes is a short but tight course. It actually is fun from tee to green. The greens had not been cut .they were hairy . I asked the gentleman behind the counter to make an adjustment. He offered 9 holes for free because of the greens.he was polite an accomadating. I would like to play it again and see if greens are better.its a great course for short iron and hybrid practice.

Interesting Layout

Short course that demands accuracy. No real need for a driver but will more than likely use every club in your bag. Greens were still thick due to winter grass but it will pay huge dividends the rest of the season.

Tight, short course

I like to play this course with my 10 year old son because it is inexpensive and the pace of play is really quick. We played 18 holes on a Saturday afternoon in 3 hours.

The new greens have come in nicely, but they are really long. It is like they haven't been mowed in over a week. The ball rolls smooth, but they are really slow.

Much Better

Much improvement on conditions of golf course. The greens were the best ever, still needed trimming the day in which we played, but major MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS. Keep up the good work with the grounds and practice putting surface. Finally whom ever it is that,s making the efforts to change the opinions of past golfing experiences there, GREAT JOB!! It,s a course that,s close to the airport and somewhat tight, which is a good thing. Again, keep up the course and your efforts are appreciated. Thanks

Nice little executive course, great pace of play

I gave it 4 stars not to compare it to other larger, full par 72 courses, but 4 stars for what it is. A short (par 68) local banger that you can get through in 2 hours or so. Pace of play has never been an issue, conditions are ok (although the greens are always a bit long), staff is ok but dont go out of their way. What makes this course for me is the layout, several challenging holes with lots of par 3's and 4's so its great to practice irons. Dont expect a lot for amenities, come prepared and youll enjoy the course.

Heron Lakes

This was my first time at Heron Lakes. The course is hard to find if you are not familuar with the area. Suggest that you call ahead for directions and not depend on GPS. The course itself is not bad. Needs a little TLC Maintenance. The fairways are narrow which can be a challange with overgrown rough and houses lining the fairway. Overall, any day on a course is a good day.

Open area with 18 holes in the ground

Got it on golfnow, tee time price was worth checking it out but I'm not planning on ever going back. The green was relatively the same consistency of what a decent fairway should consist of. The fairways are in terrible shape and the rough is at times better to play out of then patchy fairways. I have played much better courses and understand that you get what you pay for and this course truly back that saying. I still feel that if your going to label yourself a golf course your greens should be at least playable.
