Cool Norman-designed course with amazing green complexes

I would love to be able to play Stone Canyon on a semi-regular basis and am jealous of the KC locals who have that option. Plus, it is a cool Greg Norman design.

When you drive into the complex, there isn’t much to look at. Just a couple of buildings that look like they were just thrown together. Plus, the bathrooms are in what is basically a fancy and big shed. The young man who checked us in was really happy to host us visitors and was eager to let us know about the Greg Norman design. Big credit to him for his enthusiasm about the course!

Let me say right away that the greens are some of the most difficult one’s I’ve played recently. Many have multiple tiers with crazy elevation changes, while others have steep collection areas that gather mishit approach shots. Other greens are quite large and relatively easy to hit - just make sure you hit it onto the correct level. On No. 2, I had one of the longest birdie putts of my life as I hit it fat but onto the very front of the green but the tee was all the way in the back.

I would tell people to take a good look at what tees they are going to play. There were a number of tee shots and approach shots that had forced carries. One that was very scenic was No. 11 but you had to carry the ball at least 200 yards over a ravine from most of the teeing options.

It is NOT a course I would recommend walking. Some of the tee boxes were far away from the previous green and had major elevation changes that would be difficult to traverse. Plus, there is a long tunnel to get to 6 and 7 that you have to go back through again to get to hole 8.

A hole I did not like was No. 15. It has this weird split fairway that just ends. Then you have a forced carry over to the right to the rest of the fairway and the green. It was just an odd hole that seemed out of place on the course.

Our pace of play was great. The course was busy on an amazing fall day but we never had a delay.

I would highly urge anyone to play there when in the Kansas City area.

Challenging Greens make for a fun experience

Stone Canyon has so much potential. The greens are very challenging, some being crowned and others having severe slopes and tiers. Then the green surrounds are so impressive and very penal. Big chipping areas funnel balls down well below the greens and provide ample opportunity for a creative short game. You really need to miss on the correct spots on these greens.
The layout is another plus and something you won’t find anywhere else in Kansas City from my experience. The front nine is an especially solid loop. The back nine is nice as well but they didn’t have as many intricate greens on that side and there are a few design/set up issues I’m not sure I agree with. Last note on the layout, don’t expect to walk this course.
The reason the overall rating stays down on this course for me is the maintenance. First off, it’s all bent grass, and I just don’t think any course in Missouri should try to use bent grass. It’s just not the climate for it. That being said, they have good fairways for bent grass. Just have to avoid the many divots and the occasional burnt out patch. The tee boxes leave a person wanting with how chewed up and stressed they are. Then, the most neglected part of the course has to be the bunkers. I’m not sure when the last time those things were worked on but they were in dire need of some TLC. Two have been removed on the course, and it’s my experience that that seems to lead to more in the future. I hope not because it’s a well bunkered course and the bunkers themselves are intriguing.
A positive note for the maintenance is that the greens roll pure and true. They won’t be the fastest you play on but they are plenty fast enough with the slopes they have.
I hope this course can get on top of maintenance because it really is a great place to play.
I would suggest playing this course because it really has some interesting greens, a very good layout, a good value, and the maintenance is still good enough to have a good time.

Each hole has something unique about it

Great course! For the price it’s totally worth it. For sure a top public course in KC. Not a course you want to walk, some very long distances between holes. The layout of the course is unique as most holes you tee off from high up and others you hit over water or OB. Bunkers offer a great challenge, deep and big, The hardest thing about the course is the wind due to the elevation changes on most tee boxes. Greens are good size for the most part with multiple levels. A lot of areas around the green where if you miss you fall off. Fairways and rough were maintained to the level of a private course. The only negative is the lack of people playing fixing there divots. Course is relatively short, but the greens, bunkers, and hole layouts make up for that. Overall, Reminds me of an slightly easier Colbert hills, if your not comfortable with your golf game I would try somewhere else.

Good course and a good value.

This course is always in good shape. I play there 3-6 times per year and every time I have played the course has been in very good shape. Tough greens on some holes. Lots of undulations in some. Several of the holes are pretty difficult for a 15 handicap. Lots of available trouble is you stray from the fairway. My buddy and I buy 10 play cards and it is very reasonably priced. We will continue playing here and hope everyone gets the chance to play the course.

Great Scramble Course

Played here in a scramble which made the course more interesting. I probably would have been frustrated had I played my own ball on a normal day. The course was in pretty good shape. The cold and the wind added to the overall difficulty of the course. Greens were tough. Always staff below the hole on this course.

Excellent Greens

The course is in great shape. The greens were smooth and fast. No dead spots in the fairway or on the tee boxes. Love the layout, which is pretty challenging. The only thing everyone hates is the green on number 7. Our foursome played in exactly 4 hours. They did a good job of clearing out some brush on a couple of holes that made it hard to see the fairway on the other side of a gully, but that brush is growing back. Needs to be cleared again.

Pretty Rough Shape and Slow Play

I played the course for a second time, with the first time having been around 6 years ago. I was very disappointed in the course conditions as other than the greens it was in generally poor shape, with many large patches of the fairways being dead, looking like possibly fungus killed the grass. Note, the grass kill was not because of a lack of water. Beyond that, the traps appeared to have not been groomed at least since March with a number of bunker areas that were just basically mud, no sand in those spots. Beyond the rough course conditions the our foursome dealt with slow play. In front of us were two twosomes, with the twosome in front of the one directly in front of us being very slow. I am not sure why the course did not pair the two twosomes up since it was a Saturday.

Stone canyon GC 2016

The course condition this year is phenomenal (2016) Probably the best course in the KC metro area. Pace of play is normally excellent unless a 5 some is allowed which can slow play substantially. Club employees are very nice . The lack of a dedicated club house takes away from the overall course experience if your considering joining

Serious Potential

I was a bit nervous when I headed to Stone Canyon based on the previous poor reviews that I read. And although the course is not pristine, it was much better than what I was expecting. The Greg Norman design layout is great - generous fairways with a good mix of straightforward holes with holes that require some ingenuity and shotmaking. I played with a couple of guys who have been members out here for a few years, and based on what they said, this course has seen very good as well as very hard times. Apparently there is new ownership that has recently taken over and is giving this course the love that it deserves. This track has some serious potential with some TLC.

Not Going Back

I have played this course at least a half dozen times and every time have had an issue. Only once have we gotten off the tee on time with up to 45 minute delays. Yesterda,y as we made the turn the owner decided to jump on in front of us with a fivesome! It added at least 1/2 hour to our round and put a damper on a good round. The course is very nice but the course is mismanaged beginning with the owner. Will not be going back.

Enjoyable golf. Scenic fairways lined with trees, slightly hilly, and with terrific greens that are challenging. This is especially true on the first nine. The back nine has a few holes surrounded by new homes coming up close to the fairways. The course was in good shape. Good value. Located on the eastern edge of Kansas City metro near I-70. The golf course is far more attractive than the trailers they use as their building.

Mediocre course

Extremely windy day, but wind or not, the course was fair at best. Fairways were spotty with grass and dirt. The bunkers however were raked and decent and the greens were not bad. With public courses there's always the assh...s who don't repair their divots on the green and in the fariways. We will not play again. Too many other good courses in the KC area.

Jack

The course was in excellent condition. Myself and the person I played with thought the layout was very challenging with the par 5 holes just the right length. The greens were fast which made the putting a bit tougher, but we enjoyed the challenge. Would recommend this course if you want to test your skills.

Played as a single for a quick round. Not very crowded so was a good opportunity to practice extra shots. Course was a little over watered right when I played. Fairly challenging, a couple holes very hard for an average golfer to make par.

Very Nice Experience

Beautiful, well laid out course with some of the most scenic and challenging tee boxes in a reasonably-priced, public course. The guy responsible for the greens is probably a mad scientist who has painstakingly created contours, breaks, and elevations that challenged me on every hole. This course kicked my butt in round 1, but I can't wait to get back for round 2.

Great course

The course itself is pretty nice. But you can tell there's other obvious non-golf things to be worked on like the clubhouse and cart paths etc etc. Still, play wise, very nice
