Another Gem Destroyed By Warrior Golf
I actually played in JUne of 2016, but since the Calendar only went back to 2018--I chose Pearl Harbor Day for Warrior Golf's destructive surprise attack on this course, as well as my wallet. Because some places are still advertiseng and chargeing for tee ties at this property, which doesn't even sport a condemned club house or pool unfit for human use anymore, I consider this review a publiuc service announcement as fair warning.
I really don't like trashing a course so I won't. What I will do, however is trash Warrior Golf for the almost criminal way in which they have driven what was once a very nice course, with genuine bent grass greens, into the ground. Strong words I realize, but here's how it all went down....and down...and down ad infinitum.....
Nocona Hills was a local gem in the North Texas Region , and if you enter the premises you can see row upon row of what look like little boat houses. They are actually golf cart sheds where members kept their private carts. Several of the greens boast fans...Yep..fans. That's how you keep bent grass greens cool in these hot Texas summers. Genuine Bent Grass Greens are prized for their true rolling qualities, and are a rarity here in Texas. After making a reservation on Golf 18 Network, my brother and I headed out to play this once fine course. Well here comes the bad news.
Upon arrival the guard at the gate wouldn't let us in. It seems that the pro shop, a once nice little half a million dollar building was condemned since Warrior refused to put a new roof on it. He says we need cash up front to get in, and he'll get one of the lawn mower guys to fetch us a cart. Now at this point most sensible people would walk away and call it a lesson learned the hard way,. Well my curiosity gets the better of me so I pony up the cash.
We pull up to the pro shop parking lot which is in total disrepair. The recent rains had leaked through the roof of the pro shop and insulation from blown out walls litters the floor. The gate to the pools...nice pools, is padlocked. The pools are full of brown water with scum floating on top.
The mower guy shows up to give us our cart. He's a nice guy, as was the guy at the gate. He says, "Have a good round. Some of those holes are mowed, and some ain't. They only pay me for 15 hours a week worth of mowing. I do the best I can. Some of the members try to help out and volunteer their time." Basically the fairways get a good bush hogging, but as you know if you play golf, that's nowhere near enough housekeeping to keep fairways in good shape. Oft times middle of the fairway meant "Ball Lost"....Really! Nice job Warrior. Your poor groundskeeper is doing the best he can, and people are volunteering their time to help keep a formerly great course on life support.
The greens are still in fairly good shape, and as is the case with Bent Grass, they roll very nice and true. You can see where these were once amazing greens in their day. Sadly, a full third of them are getting splotchy, which means disease is setting in, and two or three of these once amazing greens look as if they are on life support as well.
Course Layout...5 Stars
Staff Friendliness...5 Stars
Course Conditions...2 Stars..no fault of the staff or that of the volunteers
Amenities ...0 Stars...No pro in the shop, no water on the course...etc....
Course Ownership..-5 Stars. Warrior Golf borders on engaging in fraudulent dealings. They offer green fees on the Internet which they have no way of honoring...Without Cash on Hand, and a friendly and obliging staff, the day would have been a complete bust after a two hour drive. At least I got an education, admittedly a sad one, about the condition and history of a once great course.
You Get What You Pay For
1. My tee time was for 7:45am yet the pro shop didn't open till 8am. The pro shop was not at the course yet at the local hotel.
2. All the carts were locked up except for one which I used.
3. The grass was so long, I lost my ball in the fairway twice.
4. Don't use the directions on Golf Now. They won't get you there.
5. The 19th hole was close for repair.
6. There wasn't any water to drink on the course.
7. On a plus note, the greens were very soft and the balls stopped almost where they landed.
nice country course
Only players on the course. Good for country course but needs more mowing.
nice course
The tee boxes were a little rough and some of the greens needed some work, but overall not a bad track.
A Great Day
This the BEST condition I have seen this course in
a long time to play in August in Texas can be very
hot and very dry. The course is very green and lush.
I had a very enjoyable day at the course the staff
was very courteous and helpful. It was my nephew's
first trip to the course with his very own clubs and the staff there made us feel right and home and made the day very special for Both of us. A Great Day
Nocona hills
Course needs more upkeep. Fairways should be cut more often.
warrior custom golf and golf now embarassed
Warrior and golf now should be embarrassed to have their name associated with this course. First off. They didn't have cart keys available when we showed up at 1 pm. Wow. Weekend golf and the tee boxes weren't mowed as well as the fairways And fringe of the greens. Searching for balls in the FAIRWAY was a time consuming process. The greens were in bad shape as well. Save you time and money. Do not play this course.
Noconal hills
Poorly kept course . Greens were not puttable . Tee boxes weren't mowed. Only positive was it would be a good and challenging layout if course conditions were better
We are thankful to discover this little paradise course with relaxed atmosphere.
We will return as often as possible! Loved It! The course is scenic and the staff assures a friendly and happy experience.
needs work
good for easy pace practice only 2 foursomes on course when we played staff great played extra 9 for free
Very Poor Conditions
This course's best feature is the greens and on a scale of 1-10, I would rate the greens a solid two. Fairways and tee boxes are a zero. Not worth any $ to play this course.
Nice Course for a Nice Price
Played here July 4th and was impressed with this course in Nocona. I am a beginner golfer and while the course was not one of the top notch courses by any means, it had well to decently maintained fairways and greens. The roughs are mowed at approximately 4-5 inches, so keep an eye on your ball, otherwise you might lose a couple during the day just not being able to find it in the rough, but it is mowed to that height and not just unkempt. Overall a good experience and very friendly staff.
Not a bad track at all
The staff was great and not a bad track for a small community and great price to play there. The course needed attention all over...tee boxes..fairways and rough. The greens were very nice.
The greens were in very good shape, but the areas next to the fairways need to be mowed.
Overall, a good value for the money. Would like to see the course mowed and maintained a little better.
Warrior Golf's name was not just associated with this once awesome course, soon after purchasing this course they neglected it and ran it in the ground. Unfortunately, you played the course after Warrior purchased it and prior to their Chapter 11 Bankruptcy.
