Well maintained course, beautiful views - no frills.
Most of our local courses have been closed for several days following extensive, heavy, rain. We found this 9 hole course to be open and conditions here were surprisingly good. Well drained, with only a couple of pools of surface water. One temporary “green” (a more closely mown, bumpy, area of fairway), several winter tees.
As this was our first visit, the lack of on course sign posting made it difficult to find some tees - and was frustrating, when approaching greens, to not know exit direction - contributing to slower play.
The course itself is relatively short, but challenging - especially for us both, who are not long hitters.
The clubhouse / locker room were open but the bar / catering services closed (apparently very limited opening hours). Website information is basic, with no course condition, layout or scorecard info etc. There is a ‘vlog’ from a visitor which helps create a favourable impression of the course.
The course info phone number was a simple “course open” message, with no supplementary info about trolleys etc. On arrival, a notice board showed trolleys allowed, but not buggies. We also met a few local players coming off course who were very friendly and mentioned a couple of things to be aware of.
Our tee time was one of the last of the day at 11:50, and we finished the 18, playing two circuits from the same tees - finishing as dusk fell. We were the last cars on the car park. During play we saw few other players, but let a pair of locals through - which helped us navigate the last few holes, first time around!
So all in all, a lovely day - about an hour’s drive from home and we will certainly return.
Round ruined by David
All was going well until we got to the last hole and we then had some obnoxious older bloke shouting down from the 1st asking what we were doing. We thought it was quite obvious that we were golfing but because we were guests and not members he thought we should not have been there because he obviously owns the property then a lady felt she had to apologise for his rudeness which was not her place as she did nothing wrong ACT YOUR AGE DAVID
Pretty challenging course
It is only a 9 hole course but pretty with some very good holes.
5 (or 10 if playing 18) of the holes are a definite challenge and require accurate good play the other 4 fairly short but still need accurate play to score well.
The greens were in despite need of a cut when we played but otherwise the course was in fairly good shape.
Pretty course
Masham is a mature, woodland course with some very pretty holes, including one which crosses the river. Despite being only nine holes, with a partly shared fairway on holes one and nine, it still includes a mighty 547 yard par five. A most enjoyable course.
Hidden Gem
We played this as a 3 ball whilst on holiday, myself (low capper) and my sons (15 and 9) who both play regularly and in junior teams. It’s a lovely setting with some quirky holes. Welcome by club staff was great. The greens were ok, currently doing some work on them so weren’t perfect. Clubhouse is lovely, with rear terrace overlooking the river. Only thing that spoilt it was the attitude of one particular member who came marching over to declare that he had nearly been hit by an errant tee shot on the 5th hole, and hadn’t heard a fore shout. After explaining to him that he hadn’t heard one because there wasn’t one, as no body was anywhere near the landing area of the ball (or in sight, as they were round the corner on the 6th green). It appeared the ball came to rest on the 7th tee box, and he had walked onto the tee and found the ball there. Really annoyed me, and he made a complete fool of himself in front of my sons. He didn’t manage to spoil the experience of the course, but typical golf course snobbery that was totally unnecessary. I would encourage you to play the course, £15 for 9 holes is a bargain.
We enjoyed playing Masham as it was a very well presented course and as it was quite tight was challenging. The staff were very helpful and friendly both on the course and in the bar . We will definitely come back
Delightful 9 hole course.
A very pleasant course set in the very pleasant area of North Yorkshire.
Fairways too long
Pretty 9 hole parkland course, fairways needed cutting it was like hitting out of the rough all the way round the course.
Great challenge of your accuracy
A lovely setting and great test for your golf. The course was in great conditions this early in the season nice to be able to play on Saturday where most courses won’t invite guests. We will come back
Great to be out
Coarse in great Nick. Shame we couldn’t have a beer yet to top off a great time
A perfect start to the new season
What a gem of a course. We played as a two ball on a spring day that was better than many summer days! Perfect conditions for our first outing after lockdown. Don’t be put off by there only being 9 holes, every hole has a challenge and a beauty. We spoke with both the Pro and the Head Groundsman by way of conversation and were made to feel welcome and valued. We we go back? Most certainly!
First time playing masham, but I'll be back
Incredibly friendly course, with nice open fairways
Picturesque course
Pretty nine hole course.Soft in places due to excessive rain over previous few days.
Disappointingly no food or drink service at 2pm Friday lunch time despite course being busy.
Coffee machine with no instructions dispensed then swallowed a coffee pod and produced two cups of hot water. What we needed was lunch and a beer.
Beautiful,if small greens.
Would play again but suggest checking availability of catering facilities.
Very friendly golfers on the course (assume members)
