Pleasant change, great value
Every Thanksgiving, I have family in town and we tour various courses. Texas National is always on our list due to the great value it represents. For under $20, we get a nice quiet round on a geat track with beauty on every hole. For a country course, it has a great layout and is kept in decent condition given the time of year.
Elevation changes like this rare in Houston metro area
Enjoyed casual round at Texas National. The elevation changes are a welcome relief from the typically flat layout Houston courses. Even the Golf Club of Houston (site of Shell Houston Open) has basically zero elevation changes. This course is what you'd expect in a rural type course, ie, rough around the edges, but the several two tier greens are challenging along with several tight driving holes. Great value as one can play (with cart) for less than $25 on weekdays.
Can't complain
Course in fair condition, but for the price you can have no real complaint . Never slow play!
Good Overall Course
Pace of play was great. No rushing thru. Friendly employees. Good course layout. Challenging lies. Great place for area golfers.
Not worth playing.
Huge ant mounds on the greens. No grass in the fairways.
This is Golf!
If you are a golf snob, please play somewhere else. The fairways are average. The greens are better than average. The design is wonderful.
This parks style course can test every club in your bag and still get you home in time for a nap. In spite of its inconvenient location, it deserves more play and greater appreciation by real golfers.
One gripe, please groom your sand traps.
Add water to make a gem
Nice low traffic course in the North Houston area. The price was very affordable and the course was on par with other courses in the area. If this course could get a little more water and the ponds dug out it could be a true gem.
Expansive
I understand, it would be difficult to keep up with a course so spread out. Several holes appeared yo have sprinkler system damage with washouts. Everyone (even the cart maintenance guy) was very friendly. No beer cart, no Marshall's, no starter which has plusses and minuses. Great value, good character/elevation changes, uses thicket for hazard over water on most holes.
Course is getting better
I play this course every week and I am seeing a slow positive improvement. Recently the greens were fertilized and that has helped a lot. Staff is beginning to mow more often which has been a lacking in the past. New management is working very hard to get this facility in shape and I hope that they are successful because this course has a lot of potential.
Challenging course
Have played this course a few times, the course is in fair condition, ball control and hitting fairways is a MUST anything other it's lost in the woods or foot high field grass, greens could defiantly use some work, all and all it's a nice place for the money
Best deal around
I'll start by saying any round of golf you can play for $10 is a great round of golf. However, even as a beginner I can say this course is poorly managed. I didn't expect much, since I don't understand how they make any money with such cheap green fees, but this was a little below my expectations. The fairways were in horrible conditions. There was dirt everywhere and the grass was so thin you could hit a tee shot 200 yards and watch it roll out to 275 yards before coming to rest. This made it tough when my tee shots would hit in the middle of the fairway and then roll 50 or more yard and end up in the rough. The greens were in fair shape, however, and overall it was an enjoyable experience for the money. I'd recommend the course if you're just out to practice or kill some beers with your buddies during twilight hours, but if you're looking for a beautiful course to play on a Saturday morning and get the "full golf experience" I would look somewhere else.
Poor pace of play
The staff friendliness was great. There was about 10 course Marshall's who did absolutely nothing but watch a line form behind a slow group. Serverel groups had to skip over 1-2 holes just to maintain a decent pace of play. There was also several course employees who would run into the fairway trying to complete daily tasks, I blew this off with the mindset that they were preparing for the weekend play. To wrap up this review, I ended up leaving on hole 12 due to the poor management of pace.
grounds need attention
dont revommend ball hunting off the fairway. lots of poison ivy. fairways need attention, weeds present with high rough. overall for the money, its was a good experience and challenging.
Nice Course
The course was in good shape. A few spots had some tall grass but other than that it was pretty good.
Good but needs work
I played this course with a friend using the hot deal price. The course is fairly easy for people who play pretty regularly, but perfect for people just learning the game. The rough is basically a bunch of high grass that has not been cut in a very long time. The staff is extremely friendly.
Good moderate course for the beginning or average golfer.
I've played here many times, and will go back many times more. For my game, which is someone that hopes to break one hundred now and then, it's just fine. Staff is friendly, value is great, facilties are just fine. We played after a week of off and on rain, so the course wasn't mowed as it should be, but we still had a great time.
Great Value
fairways good shape, rough was rough consider your ball lost, greens in rough shape
This course needs new management
Fairways were nice but rough was over grown any ball hit there was considered lost greens were in bad shape
Good course for the money
If you're looking for a good deal on a decent course, then this is for you. This course won't "wow" you, but it was in pretty good shape due to the rains. The only major negative was several of the greens had some bad spots on them. But the overall value of this course is hard to beat.
Rough Shape
I played on a holiday and the rate was very cheap for a round of golf. I had previously played a year and the course was in good shape. This go around the course was in bad shape, the greens had holes that created an unfriendly putting green. The outside rough was roughly up to my knee and balls hit there were often just lost balls. My counterpart stated they must have fired the greens crew.
