Jack always gives you something to think about
As a non-member resident of PGA West I love to seize the opportunity to play any of the courses when they are priced reasonably. Today I was able to score a fantastic price for a 12:54 tee time. The service from clubhouse to cart barn was exceptional. Smiles and warm greetings abound. The starter/Marshall as well as the cart barn guy were pleasant and friendly. Never once did I feel rushed or unwelcomed. Ended up playing the Championship tees as a single. Pretty much had the course to myself so it was just about as pleasant and tranquil as it gets.
To be honest, this was the worst condition I've seen the course in. That's not to say it was unplayable, but there was a LOT of dead patches in the fairways as well as around almost every green. Paid the price on a few errant tee shots missing fairways. The rough is beyond thick, extremely inconsistent, and made it exceedingly difficult to find a ball that was only a few yards offline. This was surprising as the other courses are in nowhere near the disrepair that the Nicklaus Tournament was in.
Pace of play was incredible, as the course was completely empty. Saw the beverage girl multiple times throughout my round, and water jugs were full and icy. I look forward to playing here again, as many times as possible. Despite the patchy conditions, I know the course will recover and be as beautiful as we come to expect from a PGA West track. It was all worth it, as I received some of the best service from the staff that I have ever received here...and I've played many a round between Nicklaus/Norman.
Terrible value for money. No availabillity on the range and course in bad condition - greens bumpy and sand traps completely unacceptable with deep footprints everywhere… 6 hour round and spectacularly bad value for a round of $469. Never coming back and will tell everyone I kno me not to spend their money there…..
Fun course
The moment you arrive your experience starts. Greeted by the hard working and friendly backshop staff, they take your bags and let you know they will have your bags in a cart waiting for you and direct you to where the proshop is so you can check-in.
The driving range is an experience you won't see at many other public courses. The entire range is a radar field with numerous trackmans. You just need to download the trackmans app and login. Then you can follow your shots while warming up if that appeals to you. The range is in use for both the Stadium and Nicklaus courses so it is busy and you may have to wait for a stall to open up.
The course itself was fantastic. If you're hitting it well then it should be fun... Not so well... You will be penalized.. But in a fun way you won't get to experience at most courses you will play. Deep bunkers and drop-offs on most holes that you will want to avoid. Greens were not severely sloped so putting was not too difficult. Greens were ok, speed was about a 10/11. It is open public so there were quite a few divots on the greens left unattended to. Too bad people don't show a little more etiquette when playing. Hole 15 and 17 are both tough holes... Make sure you take an extra club to take the hazards out of play. Would I pay the full price for a primetime tee time? Probably not... But we got a good price for an afternoon teetime and we're just barely able to get 18 finished in the dark on the last hole. Started at 2:51 and finished about 7:15... So pace was decent for a difficult course. -29 for the American Express champion on these courses goes to show how good the pros really are.
Bumpy and Greens were aerated (tines)
Practise green was smooth and fast....course greens were not.
Hit the greens.
Excellent fairways. Greens were nice but very firm. Very difficult greens to hit. Almost all surrounded by deep bunkers and steep slopes. Backs of greens are a bail out but leaves tough downhill chips.
Sharpen your short game.
Course was in great condition. Fairways were perfect and greens were good too. Almost every green was guarded by steep bunkers or steep drp offs on all sides. One criticism I had was that the greens were rock hard and didn’t hold iron shots very well resulting in a lot of hard bunker shots or chip shots up steep banks that made up and downs almost impossible.
Not for everyone
This is not a course for everyone. The design requires accuracy and length , and errors are heavily penalized. Golf carts don’t have GPS screens so bring a rangefinder! A high score will reduce your cost per shot, if that helps!
Golf paradise
Amazingly beautiful course, exceptional course conditions, perfect weather, one of the best, most memorable golf experiences of my life,
GPS
No GPS which is not a big deal, but no course map either so. O idea where trouble is. That was surprising and a minus
Condition of Sand Traps
The sand traps were like concrete. Hitting out of them resulted in taking extra strokes. Very difficult for the average golfer.
Great Experience
The course was challenging and very well key. Only issue were the green sand traps. The sand was hard packed and no give. Made chipping out of them almost impossible.
Great Day on the Course
Greens and fairways were in great shape and the pace of play was good. Enjoyed the round immensely.
Tournament Challenge
Facilities and course are fantastic. Great driving range, lots of targets, grass tees!! Like to have had club cleaning stations out on the range though. Fairly generous off the tees on most holes but approach shots to the greens are challenging. Tough to hold most greens with approach shots if you don't hit the ball high and can land it softly. Bunkers were a real challenge as some of them were surprisingly inconsistent in sand depth. Island par 3s are fun....I think!! Greens were fantastic as they rolled fast and true even in the late afternoon. Would play again, but expect slow play. Just too short tee time intervals so lots of waiting especially on island par 3s.
SOOOOOOO GOOD
Having played the Stadium course, I was not going to play here. Found an awesome deal on Golf now and decided to go for it. WAS IT EVER WORTH IT! Fairways and in superb condition. While the rough wasn't so deep that you couldn't find your ball, but deep enough to grab a lofted iron to get to fairway. Forget about going for the green. Greens were perfect. Reasonably fast and rolling as true as could be.
Layout, you would stand on the T-box and just drink it in. I am so glad I played it
Enjoyed the course
Fun course from the correct tees, brutal otherwise.
Fast greens compared to other nonPGA courses. Older Jack design with angled greens demanding distance control, dropoffs near fairways, thick rough. Reasonable pace of play for a resort, under 4.5 hours starting at 1. Not sure how many following groups finished.
