Great winter conditions
First time playing here. Played twilight so zero crowds.
The practice facility is awesome. Two teirs. Only trackman in south bay (from what I hear, but I know golfsmith in San Jose has them too). The pro shop is pretty well stocked for just a golf course pro shop, but when you have mega stores like Golfsmith just a 10 min drive away I don't know why you'd come here for clubs unless you are either getting a discount or you need to buy one for your round.
The restaurant staff was very friendly. The Turkey Chili behind the bar was amazing. I had two servings. And I don't like chili if that means anything.
For a rainy day and during a drought year the course was in much better condition than other courses in the area. There were plenty of puddles on the fairway but that just means there's good undulations in the fairway and its not as "flat" as other muni courses. The greens are well kept.
Bottom line if you can get a twilight rate this course is well worth it. I hear the course charges in the 60's for weekend peak hours. To be honest, that's a bit much for a municipal course. That being said, this course is miles better than other municipal courses in terms of staff friendliness, pro shop stock, course condition and layout, and practice facilities. They could name this course a fancy name and totally get away with it. Long story short, this course is worth the money even on peak hours. Other than the name itself, its anything but a municipal course.
I'll be back here soon.
Nice course!
SJ muni in great shape coming out of winter. Green/lush fairways and tee boxes good. You can tell they work hard on keeping the course in good shape. Greens are good, but so many player ball marks that don't get fixed.
Easy to walk with nice layout. Really is a good value for the quality of course.
Weeds are the only thing stopping you
I have been playing this course for 30 years, and I have never seen so many weeds in all my time out there.
The worst part you stripped a drive down the middle and your second shots are out of thick weeds.
I r some greens have them right in front of the green , that’s makes for a lovely chip .
They have made a lot of upgrades over the years let’s . Fix the weeds and greens.
Slowly declining
The Course condition is slowly declining and there are zero Marshall’s or starters to control pace of play. Used to be one of my favorite courses in the south bay, but now I have to go look elsewhere.
Great course
San Jose Muni is a great golf course. The tee boxes need to be maintained better
Good for the money, afternoon is pretty slow
If you are okay with teeing off in the afternoon (2:00 PM onwards) and waiting every single shot, then I think you will do alright here.
It is hard to tell, but I am pretty sure the pace of play is affected by how they set up the tee time intervals. I think that may be the cause, but I am not 100% sure. If you are a faster player (like myself) and want to get done in 4 hours 30 minutes or less, I would try to get out before 10:00 am at the latest. Otherwise, if you want to have a good time, have some drinks, go for the afternoon.
I did enjoy the course layout. It looked beautiful and the greens were in pretty good condition.
You do get people who are new to the game and unaware of fixing their own ball marks and divots. With that in consideration, this course is good condition.
Saturday
It was a typical Saturday Saturday at San Jose Muni but this day was worse than the other the last 4 holes awaited 15 minutes per hole to tea off as the force of enemy and the force I'm in front of them were acting like they were on the PGA tour
Dog Water
Save your $$$. The course is in terrible shape. Tee boxes are in worse shape than most hazards. Fairways aren’t any better. I’m convinced every 30+ handicap in the area makes a point to come here. You’ll play a 6 hour round and even if you pummel the fairway, you’ll be lucky to hit solid grass more than 10 times. Joke of a course. Staff doesn’t care about pace. Carts die & are terrible. You couldn’t pay me to come here.
