This is a real golf course
Never played here? Play. Ever wonder why there are so many PGA Tour players from UGA? Play here and you'll understand.
To play this course exceptionally well requires you to work the ball both ways. However, if you are smart, on the holes where the bend doesn't fit your natural ball flight, you'll not let the total distance of the hole frighten you, and you'll stick with your "go to" tee shot, which might mean you club down. What? You thought I said you have to work the ball both ways. Right. But, most really good players favor a fade or draw, and if you are on a tee that demands a shot shape that is not "go to" you will club down, accept a longer club to the green, and rely on a tight short game. This is that golf course. Demanding at every turn.
Every par4/5 has a runway strip of fairway. Hitting that strip is imperative. If not, you're in medium length bermuda rough and no bargain. Very few holes are straight away and in short, I'd say this is one of the most challenging [public] courses you can play in the state. I've played most of the best public and private courses in Georgia and this is one of the absolute best pure "golf" experiences, where you'll use every club and every shot. Seriously, this is on par with the Highlands course at Atlanta Athletic Club, except that the greens at AAC are sick, and the greens here are not.
I'm very good and I will only play here every so often, because it really exposes any weakness, and it is somewhat infuriating. Especially when you miss fairway after fairway. Here's what I say to myself before I get to the first tee. "Today I have to understand that I will likely hit only 6 or 7 fairways. Hitting a fairway is a perfect lie and a treat. Take advantage of the opportunity when you're in the fairway. Missing a fairway is why I play the game. I'm going to need to pitch and chip the ball well to keep my score going." If I don't say this, I'm playing with false expectations and will always be disappointed in myself. If I do, I know what to expect, which is to rely on my short game. If you expect to be pitching and chipping the ball, you'll look forward to the chances. If you don't, you'll be cursing yourself constantly.
The one bummer is that the regulars that play here do NOT repair their ball marks and despite the staff's desire to have perfect greens, many local yocals ruine what could literally be a perfect tour quality golf course to all that play here.
3 hour 36 min round with 2 lightning delays
I see past comments about slow play. Let me assure you that as a pair on July 5th we zipped through regardless of not 1 but 2 lightning delays of 28 min. each. The course was in great condition. The bentgrass greens are starting to show some stress from the summer heat but are still very good. Thx
Don’t play as a single
Great hard course, but pace of play is slow. They do not enforce their own rules. There was a group of three in front which is fine, but before them was a group of 4 who were hitting 3-4 balls each. Then in front of them was a group of 6. Rules were 1 ball only and no more than 4 in a group. I got there early and should have been able to complete at least 15 holes in the 3 hours I had as a solo and only completed 11. Also the system in the golf cart for notifying the club house of pace of play obviously didn’t matter
Favorite course in Georgia!
This course is by far my favorite course to play in Georgia so far. Great layout, bunkers are perfect, it’s manicured almost to perfection! Greens roll very true just difficult to keep bent grass smooth because they are so impressionable. The starter feels like he owns the place so watch out for him. He can be a butt hole but after you get past him, the course makes up for it for sure. You can trust the pin positions on the carts gps and they even show the slope of the greens. Just a fantastic course. Really enjoy playing here. If i lived closer i would definitely try to become a member.
Didn’t finish
Course was great. Teed off at 6:12. Figured we could play till dark and could finish in 3 hrs. Carts told us to come back at 8:40. We got to hole 13. Had a great time, just wish we could have played another 20 minutes.
Fantastic facility
First Class golf and practice areas.
Beautiful course with a great combination of tough and easier holes.
The course conditions were excellent from tee to green; my only issue was the many unfixed ball marks on the greens.
Greens rolled very, very well and true to the line.
The starter was very friendly and efficient.
Carts have touch screen GPS, with the ability to figure out distance to hazard, lay-up, etc
The pro shop was closed for inventory...bummer, as I wanted to buy some merchandise.
Thank you for the great review! We noticed this was your first time playing at UGA GC, we hope to see you back again soon!
Doesn't anyone repair their ball marks anymore?
I love this course and anyone who's played it probably does. But seriously, doesn't anyone repair their ball marks or sand their divots anymore? It's really gotten bad on this course--and it's so disrespectful to the course, to the school, and to the people who try to take good care of the course. Very disappointing to see that self-policing and self-responsibility have diminished so much. It's as much a part of the game as your shot and your enjoyment of the experience, fellas.
Thank you for your thoughtful review. You are absolutely correct, taking care of the golf course is a fundamental part of golf etiquette. We will continue to educate people on the need to repair ball marks. It's especially critical this time of year when our bent greens are under a lot of stress from the heat and humidity. Thank you for bringing this up in your review. We hope to see you back again soon.
Thank you for the positive review! Hope to see you back playing again soon.
Good but expected better…
First time playing it, The course as a whole was good, but the greens could have been better. The roll from green to green was inconsistent and the ball mark divots were a lot as though they hadn’t been repaired in days.
That being said, will definitely play it again
Thank you for your review! As mentioned in several reviews, unrepaired ball marks are becoming a big problem. We are doing our best to educate everyone on the necessity of repairing ball marks, but in the end its up to the player. Hope to see you back again soon.
Thank you for the great review! Hope to see you back playing again soon!
Spectacular
Great course, great value. My only complaint, we need more golfers to learn to repair ball marks.
Thank you for the kind words. And yes, unrepaired ball marks are an issue. We have seen a big increase in play since the pandemic and it is vital for everyone to do their part to take care of the golf course. We will continue to have our starters mention ball marks to everyone that tees it up at UGA GC.
Thank you for the great review! We hope to see you back again soon!
Thank you for the great review! We're glad you enjoyed your round so much!
Thank you for you review. I went back into our cart system to look for your messages on the date of play you listed and nothing showed up. It keeps track of all messages sent and received for every day. Was your date of play something other than September 18th? Please advise as I would like to get to the bottom of what happened the evening you played. Thank you.
