Gone Bad

A classic Ross layout gone bad. Greens are horrible…no grass and bumpy. Fairways are a thin layer of sparse Bermuda over dusty sand. Bunkers are descent. Tee boxes pitiful. Maintenance crew at full swing at 1:00 in the afternoon, not paying much attention to players but spinning up plenty of dust and dirt. Food at the turn was terrible. Can’t believe this is a private club. 5-stars for Ben, who has been at the club for 50 years…lots of great stories.

Go or Stay?

Joined here couple of years ago and the course has not improved under new management, but they are upgrading pool and clubhouse but for a golfer I was more intrigued by the course. I don't think the new owners are golfers their current investments are towards the swimming pool and clubhouse, but I assume this is what other members prefer. The vibe now seems to be more of a drinking establishment for alumni from a college called Benedictine and a place for housewives to order overpriced food. For this place to be called a real Country Club they will need to make other improvements related to policies of employee parking, what is the their definition of Private (employees friends in restaurant, public practicing on the course, etc.)

I found the course was a great design, challenging and easy to get to from mid-town, but I will probably let my membership lapse and look for somewhere that is about the golf first then the amenities. I wish them well and hope they achieve the level of acceptance the owners want in this place.

Poorly Maintained Front Nine

Very nice staff, and good course layout. The front nine fairways were not cut recently, making for a very ugly outing.

It wasn't clear why this was so, and when compared to the back nine, there was no explanation other than just lack of maintenance.

Somewhat challenging due to numerous bunkers protecting the greens on many holes.

Good greens

Overall the course was in good shape. Only a few blemishes on the greens. Tee boxes were in good shape and fairways were in great shape. Would recommend this course especially if there is a hot deal. Food was good at the turn house, and the food attendant was very nice.

This Classic Donald Ross Course is Back

This country club changed ownership and its name in March 2018.
There is a lot of history here. The golf course was designed by the Iconic Scotch architect Donald Ross in 1927.
During the late nineteen twenties and thirties, this club was the gathering place for the New York and Chicago Mafia.
The classic old hotel was originally named The Oglethorpe in honor of the founder of the state of Georgia.
Connor was an outstanding fellow in the pro shop. He was so accommodating and helpful.
The golf course is in good condition with impressive greens. There are 200-year-old oaks and pine trees surrounding the course. Water is used to intimidate on half a dozen holes with some tough carries. All holes have bunkering but do need a lot of sand added to upgrade from dirt.
The restaurant there was a big and pleasant surprise. Their grille room was active on a Sunday afternoon. Aleigha was our very helpful server.
My blackened grouper was amazing and the trio of shrimp salad, tuna salad, and chicken salad was tasty.
My BW had the Caesar salad and the bowl of She Crab soup. Both of these dishes disappeared quickly.
The new chef here is named Frank and he's a keeper.

No gators?

Great course for ladies and a surprising little gem! An impromptu trip to Savannah with golf clubs and GolfNow led me to this course. The greens had been aerated so the rates were reduced. This course is nice and flat with a few water hazards. No dynamic landscape and or alligators (I was hoping to see one in the south) but the morning temps were nice, fairways well cared for, sandtraps well sanded, and greens (other that aeration) in great condition. I think the clubhouse is going through a remodel or ownership change? The proshop has NOTHING for women, not even souvenir items. No towels in the carts or on the course. We were snubbed for using GolfNow (if course doesn't want our money then don't allow GolfNow). But here is the truth, if it weren't for GolfNow we wouldn't have known about the course and they wouldn't have gotten $200 in green fess. So tell the staff to "Smile, be nice, and provide all the amenities and courtesy you would to members!" Member or Guest, it's my experience that ALL golfers appreciate the courses and any opportunity to play.

After a round of golf we had lunch in the clubhouse. Food was good and staff very friendly. A great place to spend some time in the AC after a round of golf (even if we did ride in carts).

Course Closed with no notification

I had planned on playing a round here with my father who was visiting for the weekend. We rarely get to spend time with one another in person, and so a round of golf is a special treat for the two of us. We had played the course before and enjoyed it and so we booked it the night before, knowing we were working with a pretty tight window, schedule wise. We arrived at the golf course early enough and were greeted by a man on a golf cart who informed us that the course was closed for the day for a private event. I understand these things can happen, but we had received no notification ahead of time, even though they had our email address and phone number. They offered us a tee time on the next day, but as my father was leaving town, that was not doable.

I do not know if the fault was with the course or the website, but needless to say, this special outing with my father was ruined.

Forgot how much I like this course.

Really nice course with and older course feel to it. I really like the layout some holes can be challenging but nothing to severe. Staff was friendly and pace of play was ok did slow done Abit on back nine. If it was a little cheaper on Golf Now I would definitely play this one more often.

Very average Donald Ross

Was expecting a better layout for a Donald Ross course. There were 5 or 6 excellent holes the rest very average as was the course conditioning. Not worth the drive from Hilton Head. In its defence it was cool and windy which upped the ante difficulty wise.

Nice Course but over priced

Course is nice...flat and wide open...have now played a lot of courses in the Savannah, Bluffton and Hilton Head area and this course is over-priced relative to others in the area.

Great Course

Overall great course to play. Very tricky greens to read. Your best bet is to put your approach shot inside 10 feet.
The staff was great. You have to meet Franklin the starter. It was a pleasure meeting and talk to him. He literally knows everybody.

Nice Course

I played Wilmington Island while vacationing in Savannah with my family. I was very interested to play once I learned it was a Donald Ross design. The course is very nice and was in great shape, although the greens were a little bit on the slow end. We arrived before the pro shop opened and had a great conversation with the starter who has been at the course for a very long time. We warmed up at the driving range before the round but we had to stay on the mats, which was a tad bit frustrating. Overall, it is a very nice course for the money.

Poor overall shape

Greens good other conditions average at best. Not manicured well at all. Tee boxes thin grass mostly sand. Just not plush like other reviews have said. For the area average. For the money poor. Would expect more green plush conditions.
