Excellent layout but not the greatest conditions
The course is beautiful and plays fair for the average golfer, however, the greens were blazing fast and plagued by patches of dried out grass
2 yrs since last time-not a lot of change
I hadn’t played here in at least a couple of years. I heard they were under new management so I thought I’d give them a try. The good: nice layout, greens were undulating and could be fun and challenging, pace of play was fantastic, the layout is good with a nice mix of challenging holes that require some strategy and some easy breather holes, and staff I encountered was friendly. Areas of possible improvement: the greens while soft had some serious issues with patchy grass. If better maintained, greens would have been challenging and consistent and great. Traps, while not as bad as described earlier, still have some rocks in them, but they were not rock hard and played well (just not crazy about poss hitting rocks w/ Clubface) Tee boxes where ok - not terrible, not pristine. Fairways had some patches of weeds/bad spots. For the $, well worth a quick round. I know the extra maintenance to bring the course to the next level is somewhat cost prohibitive, but I can’t help but think what this course could be with well maintained bent grass fairways and greens...could be a gem. As it stands though, it’s a nice fun challenging course that serves its purpose with fair value. I will be back when the need for a quick local round is in order.
Dead Greens
Love the place , staff treats us great , but the GREENS were dead , just awful . I play here a few times each year , will not return to those greens .
Nice course
First time playIng this course and well worth the time. I thought course was in good shape considering the amount of rain during the week. A couple minor issues on the greens and the tee locations looked like they haven’t been moved in a while due to divots. Be prepare for a couple tight holes and two long par fours. Overall I would definitely play again. We played following rain in morning and overcast conditions so not sure of pace of play on good weather.
Course needs love
A little gem that with a little love could be a destination. Every green is elevated and somewhat undulated. We were in the middle of dry season so it was a bit rough. But the layout was cool with many elevated tee boxes. I will come back but hesitate to bring a person who is used to pristine conditions. If you can get over that you will love the layout!!
Hidden gem
The course is in good condition for an old course.
$20 to $30 value at most
Simply put Longwood is in very rough shape but playable. Very dry and rock hard in all areas right now. Tee boxes haven't been moved in at least a week (or two) and several of the flag positions haven't been moved either. Traps are essentially hard pan/dirt/rocks. Maintained "just enough" our group found the greens to be pretty sketchy/bumpy and slower than most tracks in the area. Conditions similar to a Chicago Park District course. The folks are friendly, they have a grass range, have new carts this year and it's a golf course where you can practice your game....difficult to recommend the course to others however if you want to play an old school course in rough condition it is a fun play and with the rock hard conditions you need to pay attention to getting your ball on line and not short siding yourself. Course is part of the GolfVisions courses so we play it once a year with our GolfVisions players pass.
Memorial Day round
I haven't shot Longwood in about 3 years. Partly because of course conditions and rotating ownership (non-ownership).
My friend golfed it the week before and said it was in good condition. Let me say this is the best condition the course has been in at least 6 years.
Green are in super condition. Fairways are perfect.
I wish the rough was cut a little closer, but don't we all?
Looks like previous drainage issues on #4(?), are under control. What use to be mud, is now playable fairway grass.
Will definitely play this course again. Just cut the rough 2 inches shorter!
Extremely unprofessional.. Worst golf experience of my life
I've been playing here for multiple years but will never come back. When we got to the course there was a log jam at the first tee so we tried going off on the 10th. There was no one on the 10th tee or even in sight on the back nine. We were getting ready to tee off when a very rude lady came running at us. She said that we couldn't start on the back nine and had to tee off on the first. We were frustrated with this but complied without a problem. We were moving pretty quick for the first 4-5 holes but then it got really slow out of nowhere. We found out that they let a 13some (yes, thirteen people all playing) and a separate group of 6 play together. This was holding up the entire course. We ended up meeting the two groups ahead and behind us because of the time between swings. We had multiple minutes between shots. It was extremely frustrating, but the most frustrating part was not being able to tee off on the 10th at the beginning. That would've opened up the flow of the course. I would highly advise against golfing here. There are many course in the area that are in much better shape and run by respectable individuals.
Much improved
Course was is pretty good shape...much improved this season.
Muggy
Course was in okay condition
Perfect Sunday Morning
Played here on an early Sunday morning. The course is in great shape for this time of year. Well maintained. Speed of play was great. Challenging greens....I definitely will be back.
Extremely Rough Shape - Cool Old School Layout
2nd time playing after trying out in April of this year. Course is playable but really rough around all edges. Low areas of the course are a flood plain essentially and plays very long and wet. Bunkers are not maintained, grass is sketchy throughout fairways (lots of wet areas), rough can be extremely long or not and while the greens are okay (fairly smooth, not too bumpy) there are just rough patches everywhere. Lots of what I term difficult old school holes (very long par 4's) and lots of up and down. Old school green complexes with some decent to extreme undulations in them. In it's hey day this course was a real gem/test of all of your long irons/fairway woods. I recommend it because it's a good value if you get a hot deal, if you don't mind sketchy conditions you can get a real workout on your game - several holes you have a play a few times to really get the hang of them. If this place was in pristine shape it would be amazing old school design with all the hills and dales. Just be forewarned.....rough shape from all aspects but the routing presents a well above average test.
Solid
Good course overall. Nothing bad to say about it except why have bunkers at all if your not going to maintain them? Newer carts, no GPS. Average Course for the area.
fairways in bad shape
course needs a lot of work.
My name is Jeff at Longwood Golf Course, I am the manager here. Please let me know date and time you played. I want to get this taken care of. I apologize you had this experience here! It is our policy when busy for people not to go off the back 9 and cut in front of the golfers who are already here and playing. That being said our staff knows that is subjective. If there is a group or a fair amount of people who recently went off to send people off the back. We do try to manage golf course flow best as we can. Is there anything I can do to get you to give us another chance to make it right?
