Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 12/2018
Patuxent Greens Golf Club is tucked behind stands of mature trees that provide the course with a peacefully secluded feel. The original course was built in the 1960s but the layout underwent a major renovation in 2005. The focus of the golf course has always been the beautiful setting, which serves as home to an abundance of wildlife including deer, heron, beavers, and golfers might even see the occasional bald eagle. The layout has plenty of risk-reward holes, including the sixth, one of the golf course's most memorable holes. This short par 4 presents different shot making options. You can either lay up between 100-150 yards out, or challenge yourself and attempt to go over the tree-lined dogleg to the green. Patuxent Greens Golf Club finishes with its signature hole, a scenic par 4 that plays to a peninsula green, backed by a view of the clubhouse.

Pautuxent Greens Hole #14 Photo submitted by scottawp290 on 04/29/2013
Pace of play
I am pretty sure that they over booked. I was waiting for about 5 minutes before every hole to tee off. we were packed in there like sardines. I told my buddy how great the course was the last time i went, this was his first time and he said he will not be back.
Great local course
Considering the time of year, February, the course was in very good shape. Nice firm greens. Friendly staff.
Good course for the money
The condition of this course was very good for the time of year . Its a very compact course that has some challenges. The layout overall is lacking but for the cheap price and quality greens it's definitely worth a play
Respect for the Sport
I have played this course 8 times since relocating to the area in early summer. I am confused about the message I get at Patuxent Greens and here is why. The staff is professional and friendly. The course has always been in good or very good condition. The pricing is reasonable for the experience. So, why does the management team allow golfers to wear "JEANS"? And for that reason I am confused. It shows a lack of respect for this great game of golf.
Excellent course in DC/Baltimore area
Nice course. A little short, but still challenging. Greens in good shape. Will play again.
An early morning paradise
Ok - I play here alot. I almost always walk the course.
Tee box condition varies - they work on the course constantly. There are temporary tees on a couple of holes at the moment.
The greens always run true. They were cut a rolled not long ago and are faster than I've seen them in quite a while.
The course has a lot of water on it - yeah for challenges. The course holds a lot of wate and this summer weather resulted in several of the fairways getting "baked". There are still signs of that but they are beginning to return nicely.
The course is flat, somewhat short by modern standards, the rough is rough so stay out. Lot's of criticism on here about the rough. The water and the rough are the only thing that protect this course from being over powered by long hitters.
It is great to walk. 5.4 miles average. If I tee off first I can walk this court in under 2 hours and 30 minutes. Catch it at the wrong time on a weekend and that round will easily be 5 hours.
The staff is helpful. Chad runs a good shop and Ken and his team really continue to make great strides improving the course itself.
The driving range is into a net. At least it's a big net. The building itself is arranged a little odd. They don't have a hot grill. The beer, sandwiches, hotdogs, etc are fairly priced if just a bit bland.
Showers and lockers are available. The bathroom in the clubhouse could stand a makeover.
Overall value, location and walkability and friendly staff (and their dogs) make this my golfing home.
Joe
Course a little beat up. Temporary tee boxes that we weren't told about. Greens as good as I've seen them in a long time. Traps ok. Leaves not an issue. Price point probably a little on the high side
Nice course with lots of water
I played 18 on this course in October. The conditions were generally good, although it was windy and there were a lot of leaves on the ground (perhaps can't be helped given the time of the year). Pace of play was slower than I would have preferred, but not agonizing. The back nine has a significant number of water hazards to contend with. I actually found playing the ladies tees to be more difficult than the men's. My biggest complaints are thus: they do not have a driving range to warm up, just a net to hit into, and there was a wedding going on in the clubhouse when we finished our round which was rowdy to say the least, and we felt rushed to leave at the end. The pro shop was well stocked and they had a nice bar with basic concessions. Overall, it was an enjoyable day and would absolutely go back.
Great for the price
I previously said this was a favorite course of mine. While I still think its a solid course I wouldn't call it a favorite. Some tee boxes are in fine shape but others are patchy and uneven. Fairways are in rough shape and the rough is just way too thick. Just finding your ball can be a challenge at times. The bunkers are in fine shape but I have a feeling they don't get much attention and the greens are actually in really good shape. So overall its still a solid course. I did have a round that was backed up due to an endless number of foursomes. At my scheduled tee time there were 6 golf carts already parked and waiting at the first tee box. Luckily I was able to sneak off the back nine 10 minutes after my scheduled tee time. Note: there's never a starter. What makes me keep coming back to this course is the prices. You usually get your money's worth and you're not going to find much better prices in the area
You get what you pay for
The price was right for a Friday afternoon tee time, and there weren't many other golfers out in the heat. Unfortunately, the course is not in great shape, and it impacted playability on some holes. Balls that made there way into the poorly mowed or water-logged rough were difficult to find and/or play, which slowed the pace of play. Keeping our tee shot in the fairway didn't mean we were in the clear either, sincce there were numerous burnt patches that resuled in odd bounces and tight lies. On one hole a broken sprinkler resulted in an impromptu greenside water hazard where a sand trap used to be. Also, we didn't see any staff on the course, no Marshall and no cart service. In the end we had an enjoyable practice round, and felt we got what we paid for, but no more.
A Descent Course
It's pretty wide open, although it's easy to loose your ball in the thick rough. It's a very enjoyable course.
Good Greens
Greens were good. A few fairways were damaged in the heat, but good value for the money
Don't Do It!!!
Two words:
Goat
Track
The only way I ever place this course again is if I am paid to!
"You Got 2 Be Kidding Me"
Me and two of my golf friends played at PG two Saturday's ago on August 20. PG has to be the worst Golf Course I've ever played. I won't go into detail with this review because I don't want to sound to subjective. The course is flooded, greens and fairways wet and grass looked like it haven't been cut in over 2 weeks. I should have known something was wrong when it was "cart path only". We were charged $56.00 to play on a golf course that was recently under water due to the same storm that destroyed downtown Ellicott City, MD. All the water hazard holes had a very funky smell as if there were dead fish in the water. We should have been informed at check-in and offered a discount prior to teeing off. I played this same course last year twice and the greens and course looked great. "You Got to be Kidding Me" Patuxent Greens Golf Club. You need to rename it PG Swamp Club; There's nothing Green about this Golf Course.

It's funny that you played after historic rains, then complain that the course is very wet. seems like the whole region took a big hit this past month.
STAY AWAY
We left after 13 holes due to the slow pace of play. There was a 4some in front of us that didn't have a clue of golf etiquette and didn't care. There was another 2some a few holes in front of them that must have been learning the game. I will never play here again.
Never ever again
This was very disappointing !!! I had high hopes when looking at the layout of this course online , however once we got there everything changed. We were told cart path only all day which we followed , ( though no one else seemed to have gotten that message or just didn't care to follow ) the course was in horrible condition the fairways were riddled with burnt stops and dried mud spots all over. The thing that really made things worse was the drunken golfers who were riding thu the fairways skipping holes cutting in front of golfers even when they were on the greens yelling and cursing and just acting like fools with no golf etiquette what so ever!!!! After calling the pro shop for the third time I was finally told they had no Marshall but would try to send someone out ( that never happened ) it took us six hours to get one of the worst golf experiences of my life !!! I will never go back to that course nor would I recommend this course to anyone. Truly sad to see courses out there who have no problem taking hard earned money yet are happy to over booked there course with no regulating not only pace of play but behavior on there course or invest any money or time in up keeping there course . TRULY TRULY SAD FOR THE GAME OF GOLF TO HAVE COURSES AND ORGANISATIONS OUT THERE LIKE THIS GIVING GOLF A BAD NAME !!!!
Great Value
We were pleasantly surprised with out experience. We teed of at 10 AM on a blistering hot day, so most of the play was in front of us. We had the course to ourselves. There were some bad spots in the fairway, especially on the first hole but it got better after that. The greens rolled well. Cartpath only--this course does not drain well. I love the layout--every hole is different. Lots of water. Narrow fairways.
I totally disagree with your review. PG is no way great for the value.
Good, not great.
Played in a foursome last weekend. Overall, the conditions on the course were good. Fairways were well maintained, tee boxes were in good shape, greens are a little bumpy, but not terrible. However, the rough was at least 5-6 long. I don't mind a challenge at all. But it made finding balls that were just off the fairway an extreme challenge. We spent, and so did several other groups we witness, way too long looking for shots that should have been easy finds. It was ridiculous and added quite a bit of time to our round.
So you and I were playing on the same day. I just left a review too.i'm with you I'm done PG will never see me again unless I can play for free.
