Not in great shape but promising
Greens in rough shape. Being worked on. Some tee boxes a mess. One non existent. Always challenging. A fun course but look forward to things "filling in" as spring goes on.
A great option
All told, Red Gate is a great course. It is somewhat shorter than many courses in the area, but has the elevation change on a number of holes to make up for it. You get rewarded with good shots, but are left with challenging holes if you hit an errant tee or second. I very much enjoy playing here when the course is flowing, but can be frustrating and slow day when it fills up (they do an 8-minute interval off the first tee in the summer).
The only downside to the course is the tee boxes. Almost all holes with tee boxes set back in the woods are bare dirt.
One other note: The greens were aerated/sanded at some point in the last week of March or first days of April. They had healed enough for a round on April 5, but still need a few days.
Trifling
Not good. 5 hour + round. Five some ahead of us with a small child taking multiple shots from the same spot.
No tees on the tee box. No bunker rakes. No water on the course. No beverage carts. Conditions were slightly above poor.
Call the Course
I could have saved 12 dollars if I had called the course instead of using golf now .com. I really thought that fall would cause a problem, but I have never lost so many balls due to leaves. It was ridiculous, but a lesson learned. If the leaves were not there it would be a great course.
typical sunday at redgate - awful
arrived at 1215 for my 1244 tee time. i go to check in with the starter, and surprise surprise they are running 20 minutes behind, which is pretty normal. Obviously they overbooked and/or let walk ups play. So now we are running late, and have to deal with a log jammed course, with about a 5-10 minute wait on each hole- and a 10-15 wait on par 3's. When my foursome arrived at hole 2, the was a group on the tee, a group waiting and then us, and before you knew it, the group behind us was also waiting.
Pace of play was off the charts slow, the 4th person in our group left after the 3rd hole.
The course is very short, driver isn not a good option, on most holes, i believe i only hit my driver 5 times during the round.
Also if you know redgate, you know that hole number 4, and hole 16, are probably the worst par 5's ive ever played, ever. horrible, on either hole you cant hit driver, you have to hit around 180-200 yards off the tee, then hit a 180-200 layup, just so you can have a wegde to a blind green. On 16 if you hit your ball to the right at ANY point, tee ball, layup, or approach, its dead, and the tee box were pure dirt. they need to change that hole somehow.
my tee time was 1244, i got to my car in the parking lot at 605.
and.... it was my birthday.
Wild Life Control Much Improved
The course has implemented a system of strings criss crossing their many ponds and it has had a huge impact on the geese population that used to reside there.
Enjoy this course, good challenge.
I really enjoy playing this course. It provide a good challenge and has good views. Pace of play was good and the round was at a good value. Will definitely be back and will recommend to friends.
If you like hilly courses, you'll love Redgate
Summary say it all. ****************************************
Never again
Considering the length and level of difficulty of this course, tee times are way too close together. Even after waiting 15 min. past our tee time for carts to be available, I don't mind waiting behind another group at the tee, but not 2,3 or 4. As a less than advanced (but no means slow) golfer, I felt rushed and intimidated by rude and unsportsmanlike golfers behind us. No help from the course employee, who drove into the middle of our game to tell us that the group behind us had complained that we were moving too slow. He didn't bother to find out that the complainers had only been behind us for one hole, AND that there was a group directly in front of us. Not an enjoyable experience--will not come back even though this course is very close to my home.
Short, but Challenging
This course used to be the nemesis for our group. It was always short, but challenging for us. They have cleared out many of the trees, taken away some of the bunkers, and aligned some of the tee boxes since we last played (a few years ago). It's still short and challenging for us - which speaks more to our skill level than the better course conditions. The greens and fairways are in great condition - much better then I remember. I'll be coming back to play again this fall, especially with the Hot Tee times from GolfNow.
Slow Play
Only completed 11 holes due to rain however was on a pace of close to 6 hrs. Don't play on a weekend afternoon. Hole #2 is a par 3, with that design it bottle necks after the 1st hole. Then hole #4 is par 5 that you have to lay up and people either go in water thus slowing again. If you have an entire day to give then go for it, but don't expect a nice pace to enjoy.
A Challenge for a beginner
Narrow Fairways in parts. Some steep uphill and downhill holes - that look great but that can be hard and frustrating for a novice player.
Lots of water/hazards. Prepare to lose a few balls :)
Overall though nice place. Greens were very nice. Staff also fantastic,
not bad
Tee boxes are shaggy in spots and bald in others. Most greens are receptive and smooth. Staff is super friendly.
Go play this course
Went to this course on a whim. The course is great from the staff to the fairways and greens were fantastic . Some hills to contend with for shot placement. The only thing you have to watch out for are the fairways are very close together. Go play this course.
Well laid out and maintained, providing a reasonable challenge.
The course had good fairway grass and excellent greens. The rough was trampled down in many places, making for tough chips. Holes were challenging, but reasonable. Written tips were provided for awkward layouts. Greens were very large and moderately sloped. Overall, a fun course to play.
I was good to play this course again.
This was a course I played frequently back in the 80's. It was really good to play again! The course was in good shape and well maintained. The price ($49) was decent for a weekend rate.
Everyone in the group enjoyed playing the course and look forward to playing again in the near future.
a decent muni course in a slightly-upscale neighborhood
Redgate is a fairly decent course half of which is literally hacked out of the woods, the other half lies on a wide-open plain with very few trees, bordered by public roads and private land. I would almost call it a low-rent course but that would be a little harsh. It's long enough, challenging enough and so forth to be a legitimate "18-hole course" but it's not anything special, in any way. In terms of the layout and course conditions I'd be generous to give it a 3 out of 5. If you're rusty and/or you just want to get out in the area and and hit some balls without paying a lot of money (one thing about this course is that it's fairly cheap) and you don't mind some really basic, crazzy holes that look like someone just walked into a field, mowed the grass in a circle and plunked a flagstick down in the middle to make a green...of course they are not all like that, but not much better...it's not a bad course. I've seen courses that are in much better shape that are not as much of a challenge to play, but I haven't seen many courses in this poor of a condition that were worth playing at all. And of course, despite all that, you'll still get a fair share of social-rejects walking around with their noses in the air like they are taking time off from running their Fortune 500 companies to play here. I mean, delusion has a funny way of showing up in peoples' minds. Again folks, the fact that you can afford to play golf at a halfway-decent course doesn't make you a Kennedy. And Redgate isn't even halfway-decent. It's just a serviceable 18 hole municipal course, really. It just doesn't help to be successful in your professional life when you're obnoxious in your personal life.
Great for all types of players.
I'm 70 years young and shot an 87. Good day for me. Last time I played I shot 90. Love to play the challenge holes to see what I can do. Look forward to playing agan. Great and friendly staff.
Not a good course for women or beginners.
Not a good course for women. Several of the holes are very long, uphill off the tee where the fairway flat is farther than realistically driveable for a woman. The rough grass was REALLY tall and balls were lost in plain view. Midhole hazards were hard for a woman's game also.
Not for walking but great front 9
Played with a friend who liked this a lot more. Really enjoyed the front 9 but after a while got annoyed at constantly having to tee off blind without much info to go by. They really need to give a written description for each hole. If you are a good player, which I am not I think that you will enjoy the challenge but if your game is all about blasting driver then this course will frustrate you. I will definitely go back and I think I will leave my driver at home.
