Great course

In excellent condition. Greens were very good condition and not too much pitching side to side, etc. Slow crowd around us but maybe Sunday there is like that.

Good course, bad experience

The course is a nice, tree lined course in very playable condition. Our problems started with our tee time. As we drove to the first tee, a group of 4 locals jumped our tee time and took off ahead of the two of us. Even though we waited on every hole, and there appeared to be no one in front of them, we couldn't play through. When we got to the turn, wee could see that #10 was clogged with a sixsome of teens. SIX! sent out from the pro shop in the space vacated in front of the slow foursome ahead of us. We decided to just quit after nine. I brought my cart key back and told the pro shop attendant of our problem. He just looked at me and said "Oh". Like that's the way it is.
It is good to be a local, but don't expect much if you are just a visitor.

Very Nice Small Town Course

Chisago Lakes Golf Course is a great example of what a small town golf course can be- well laid out, well maintained, friendly staff and clientele, a small but well-stocked pro shop, and a spacious pub-like grill for your after round dining and drinking. The course has five sets of tees ranging from 6,600 yards to 4,099 yards and two additional rated and sloped combo tees on the card so low and high handicappers, women, seniors and juniors can all enjoy the course at an appropriate level of difficulty. Although there are a few straight holes, most have some degree of bend and there are several right and left dogleg holes. Although the front nine is mostly flat, the back nine has some rolling terrain but no significant elevation changes. We played the course the last week of October, and were pleased to see that the fairways were in great condition. (Note: it snowed two days after we played the course.) Unfortunately, the greens had been aerated a few weeks earlier and hadn’t fully healed, so they were quite bumpy. Our general impression was that they had interesting but not severe contours and would probably be very playable under normal conditions. Depending on the tees, water can come into play on about half of the holes. Tree coverage is moderate, with large mature oaks and evergreens lining many holes, and drives must be carefully placed to avoid interference from trees on approach shots to several holes. One example of this is the 360 yard (from the back tees) par 4 15th, a slight dogleg right with water lining the right side of the fairway. You can cut off as much of the dogleg as you dare, but if your drive ends up on the right side of the fairway, you’re likely to be blocked from a direct shot to the green by a large oak that sits at the inside corner of the dogleg. Better to hit less than driver and make sure you’re on the left side of the fairway. Similarly, your drive on the 12th, a 495 yard dogleg left par 5, should favor the right side of the fairway in order to avoid having your second shot being blocked by trees on the inside of the dogleg. I enjoyed playing this course despite the less than optimal conditions and look forward to returning next golf season.

Course was in great condition. However, the greens were very fast, making for some very challenging putts.

Fantastic Course For The Money!!!

If you're looking for a challenging but fair course that is in fantastic shape from start to finish, Chisago Lakes is the Twin Cities best kept secret.

VERY AFFORDABLE RATES!!!

With beautifully maintained fairways and greens, you'll have a hard time finding a course in better shape throughout the area.

I've played over 20 rounds at Chisago this year and the staff are always VERY accommodating and friendly.

I HIGHLY recommend Chisago Lakes for recreational golf, events, and tournaments.

I have played there for over 30 years. Fun course with eye pleasing shape. In really good condition. You can play it easy or hard depending on the tee box. Worth making the effort to try.

Friendly

This course was in great condition.
I loved the more open fairways due to being a beginner. It was also challenging for the person that I was with, since he has played golf for over 20 years.
I would definitely recommend this course whether you are a beginner or a pro.
The staff was friendly at the pro shop and at the restaurant.
We had a great time even with the wind and rain. I will be playing again next year when I come up.
Thanks
For a great day in Minnesota

Fathers Day

First time at the course with my daughter, son-in -law and grandson. The man behind the counter asked if my son-in-law and I were fathers, we said yes and he handed each of us a dozen golf balls. A very nice surprise. Very impressed with the greens, in excellent condition. Fairways were good. Tees could have been mowed shorter. Enjoyed the layout, will be back.

Poor tee boxes

Tee boxes are uneven, weeds in fairway, sticks and other debris on multiple greens, pace of play was slow backed up every hole waiting for two groups in front of us caused back up behind us to the point the group behind us was hitting into us. I don't think I will return to this course got a "hot deal" price at $25 plus fees per player and feel that is overpriced. Cost is as much as a city course and in worse condition

Good course, would play again and recommend

I believe they were clearing out the water from their sprinkling system when we played so that their pipes wouldn't freeze over the winter. Obviously, this was a very rare and unlikely event to be taking place for us (so it shouldn't be a problem for you), but it did make the entire course noticeably damp, which definitely affected our play: our drives off the tee would get little-to-no bounce and pretty much ended up wherever they landed without much roll, making divots on the fairway was like cutting through butter, and it was easier to get the ball to regularly stick and hold on the greens. It would have been nice to play the course under more normal conditions because aside from the dampness the conditions of the course looked good.

Pace of play was good: we, a twosome, finished 18 holes w/ a shared cart in 3 - 3.5 hours and almost never had to wait for the group ahead (we had a tee time around 1:15 pm on the first Monday of November).

The course wasn't particularly challenging, although there were some tough holes. Aside from the particularly challenging holes, which mostly required distance control and/or accuracy, most holes were pretty moderate and forgiving.

Every hole had some combination of trees, sand traps, and/or water.

For those who like to be able to hit their driver off the tee, most par 4s and par 5s allow it without much to worry about, although maybe a 3 iron or something might be the smarter play on a couple holes. A couple tight fairways, but most were pretty moderate and forgiving if you missed them; there were times where I thought I might have hit it out of bounds but still found my ball as the rough provided a little more relief than some tighter target courses I've played.

For the longer hitters, I would definitely recommend moving back to their gold tees. Most holes are more open than they are tight and the course is only 6276 from the blues. The gold tees (their tips) are 6600, which would present a bit more of a challenge.

Each tee box typically had one or two distance markers on the hole map showing how far away the hazards are, where the fairway ends on a dogleg, etc. This was particularly helpful for us since this was our first time playing this course.

Be careful about some of the pictures of the holes, though, on the tee boxes and the scorecard. A few times it showed basically a hole that was straight as an arrow but the actual hole itself was a very slight dogleg left or right. A little misleading.

Roughs were fairly forgiving and not cut real long.

No complaints about the greens. They were in good shape, they were not dome-shaped, they were big enough to be able to regularly hit and sometimes require long lag putts but not too big, and each green had some break but nothing too ridiculous.

Also, we didn't see any water on the course so make sure you bring plenty of your own.

We played 18 holes w/ a cart for $13 a person, which was a great deal. However, I don't think this rate is always available.

I would definitely play this course again when I'm willing to make the trip. Only thing is it's a bit of a drive. I would maybe even play here more regularly if it wasn't an hour away from the Twin Cities.
