Thankful for a calm day
I thankfully caught the most beautiful course in Lincoln on a top ten day in Nebraska. Its easy to why this course would be brutal on even a moderately windy day.
The fairways are wide and flat but if you get in the rough you are likely hitting off a very uneven lie. There are plenty of opportunities to lose or find balls in deep, thick grass boundaries that separate holes.
What I liked most about this course is that it forces you to think about your second shot on the par fours. These are some really fun greens and just getting it on the green without a plan is the best way to end up with a three putt -- lots of contour to these greens.
The best holes are 9 and 18.
If you miss this course you miss the best Lincoln has to offer.
Links style
This course has a few trees but only 1 really comes into play and I want the good Lord to strike it down. The wind always seems to blow hard here. There is also quite a bit of sand.
Wide open Links style
My favorite course in the Lincoln area. Typically windy location but because it's fairly open makes play fair. Course is well maintained. Several high risk/reward holes which adds to the fun. Greens have quite a bit of slope but roll true. Strongly recommend playing this course.
Nice course if it's not windy
This course I believe was originally designed to be a "links-style" course. The layout is open and suggests that was the idea. The way the course is maintained does not imitate "links-style" at all though. The fairways are always very soft and green even in the driest parts of summer. The greens, while a little more firm from the wind drying them out all the time, are fairly soft as well. What that means is in the right conditions you can really shoot a good score out there. The fairways are very wide, though if you miss you are almost guaranteed to be in fescue grass, which does provide a challenge should you miss the fairway.
What the course is dependent on to make it challenging is the weather, and specifically the wind. The course is very open and exposed so you consistently are going to have to account for the wind off the tee and into the greens.
The staff is always pleasant, and they always tend to be running on time no matter how busy they are. The practice facilities are the best the city courses offer. There is a very large driving range, that has many targets to work on various aspects of your game. You can even practice fairway bunker shots to the right of the driving range. They have a practice green dedicate to putting, and another one dedicated to chipping so you have more separation between others that are warming up or practicing.
On a calm, or not overly windy day, I highly recommend this course, but if the wind is above 15 or 20 mph it can be a lot to handle.
Mahoney
Pace of play was terrible. 2 and a half hours for 9 holes walking by myself. This was on the course's least busy day of the week. They have a league every single day so it is somewhat hard to get on depending on timing. Nobody lets anybody play through and its full of a bunch of scrubs who wear cut offs and jorts and play with colored golf balls. The course is in great shape. That is one thing I will give it. The grounds crew does an excellent job. The layout is very easy but you can't complain too much for paying $17 for 9.
Golf on the Plains
Golf in the Wide open Nebraska Plains here. Hard to lose a ball the course seems windy all the time.
It is a fun layout and easy to walk because it is mostly flat. Really surprised that no one else has written a review. Very popular place in Lincoln Area.
