No sand
There are grass bunkers instead. Many bumps and depression around these re-built greens. This is the oldest course in Nebraska.
I love this course. Played it when I was in high school 40 years ago and still playing there. It has character!
Play this one.
Great public course. It gets a ton of play so call to get a tee time. Because it gets so much play, The greens get a little beat up. The fairways in general are in good shape, although early season standing water has left some sparse areas on several holes.
The course has only one water hole and no sand, but it challenges the players with tree lined fairways, long par fours, and side hills lies, The greens are fair, but there is plenty of break in them. Down hill putts can be touchy.
I really recommend this course.
Really nice course
This course is in great shape. They have had a mild August and plenty of rain, so the greens were outstanding. The layout does not require a lot of decisions so if you keep it in the fairway you can score. The #4 is over water, which is about it for hazards. There were a ton of people playing, but it didn't seem crowded.
I really was impressed with how clean and well maintained this course was.
I will play again.
EXCELLENT DESIGN
I disagree with the other reviewer. First this course is a city owned Muni. It is not a resort course. So yes there is clover and some weeds. But the greens are excellent condition.
It has NO sand bunkers and for some reason the course can play easy. Yet very enjoyable. Fun round every time.
I find it impossible to believe that this is the only course MW Tucker designed. Wish I knew that story.
Good City Golf Course
Overall a very good city course. The condition of the course is always good. The lack of bunkers is odd, but the undulation around the greens compensates for that and makes chips difficult in their own way. Off the tee this is probably the most challenging of the city courses because each hole has trees to account for.
Pro shop staff is always polite, but not the friendliest guys you will run in to. Nice driving range (although it is uphill) as well as chipping/putting practice green.
Only 3 par 5's to go with 4 par 3's which means par 71. You get a drive-able par 4 on the back 9 as well. The back 9, as you approach the edge of the course, offers the most scenic views as you overlook the open fields of Pioneers Park.
This is almost always the most busy of the 4 city courses, so pace of play is going to be the slowest, but you always know what you are going to get. A moderate/easy course, in good shape, that will reward you if you hit good shots.
Horrible Course Conditions - August 2015
I've played Pioneers numerous times since moving to the Lincoln area 2 years ago. The layout and setting are very nice. However, as of August 2015, the course conditions are deplorable. Large sections of fairways and greens are completely dead. Really no excuse for this with the weather we've had so far this summer. It just looks like the city has decided not to maintain the course at all.
Best City Course In Lincoln
This course is absolutely beautiful. By far the most well maintained city course. If you like variety, this is the course for you. Not a lot of tree trouble, and no bunkers, but there are plenty of places to find trouble if you're not careful. The staff is always well trained and very friendly.
Great public course
Really fun track to play. Fairways are made for the average player, but you can end up with plenty of side hill shots if you don't pay attention. The course was full, but pace of play was very good. The course was in excellent shape for the number of rounds that it has to handle. Outstanding beverage cart personnel.
