Needs work
Good layout, and very busy . So they’re making plenty of money. But the fairways look like pasture grass greens are in great shape and rolling very nicely. The cart paths were pretty rough but that’s beside the point when you’re playing golf. They need to cut back some trees on the back nine because they limit what you can do on the course. But my biggest complaint was the fairways, doesn’t look like they’ve put any work into them. Could be a really nice gem for the area!
Shame on Asheville
Absolute travesty that the City of Asheville is squandering this Donald Ross Gem. So much history, and no money to keep up to just a barely playable standard
Where is the outrage? This course deserves a rescue. Take a page out of the Charleston Muni and restore the course. The municipal golf course is a mainstay of most communities. It provides golf to all for a reasonable cost.
Especially important is the story to share about the Asheville muni and black golfer history.
One of these days it will be another step toward too far gone.
Some areas need help.
Some of the blacktop cart paths were choppy and missing blacktop. Also, the fairways aren't in very good shape
Average course, good value
Played a few days ago for the first time at this golf course. For less than $40 including a cart, the overall value is pretty good.
The conditions and quality of the course were not perfect but if you place the ball up on the fairway you can play well, greens were good!
The front 9 is simple and flat but the back 9 gets fun with some elevation changes. Not much of a challenge for a good golfer but still enjoyable.
Be careful not to park your car too close to the 18th and 9th green as players can hit your car with a bad shot.
Needs Work
The back nine needs to be closed until grass can be established on all surfaces that are in play. Roots need to be removed everywhere. Cart paths need to be replaced. The muni has been a great golf course. The bones are still there for a great course.
Tragedy for a Historical City golf course
It is an embarrassment that a golf course on the National Historic Register is so poorly maintained- this is a blight on the city of Asheville. With money and effort, this could be restored to original condition.
A course with good bones but in need of some serious TLC
After reading other reviews I wasn’t expecting to play on a perfect course. For the most part, tee boxes were ok, while some fairways were fine, others need some real help with lack of grass or lack of fairways themselves. The greens were for the most part playable and probably the best part of the experience albeit a few of them were quite chewed up and all rather slow. It also doesn’t appear that all golfers repair their ball marks. Bunkers were consistently the worse part of the course. The layout front vs back was completely different with lots of blind shots on the back 9 with mountain terrain. Losing a ball is easy when playing the course the first time given these shots plus the “rough” condition only a billy goat would approve of. Staff were friendly checking in. Carts looked and rode like they saw action in WWII but given the condition of the cart paths, you can see why. Overall, not likely to book another round any time soon but if you’re a local, the price and location are hard to beat. If you come here without high expectations and just want to play golf, I guess its ok.
Needs work
the course was in poor condition, with bare tee boxes, little grass on fairways, spotted greens
Not worth it
One staff member was very rude over the phone. And on the back 9 someone hit my ball into the woods purposely In front of me then proceeded to hold up multiple groups while they smoked weed.
Took a Shot !
A.M. was a good pick for me as I haven't played in a while.Enjoyed it and shot a good round.
Don’t waste your time
Worst course and worse pace of play of any course in WNC. Spend a little more and play somewhere that’s worth spending time at.
Course needs repairs
Haven’t played this course for about 15 years. Surprised on how much it’s deteriorated. Cart paths and tees in terrible shape. Fairways were like pastures. Greens were in fairly good condition. Only saving grace was that the fee reflected the conditions. Staff was friendly and helpful.
